Leonardo Bonucci has decided to retire from the round leather game called football at the age of 37. Bonucci revealed his decision to call time on his career via an emotional post shared on his social media accounts. Leonardo Bonucci decided to announce his retirement from football by putting out a video of him opening a photo book which included pictures of him from his young days to his time as a professional footballer. Leonardo Bonucci played for several top clubs during his stellar career, including; Inter Milan, Juventus, Genoa, AC Milan, Union Berlin, and Fenerbahce. Bonucci has an alluring trophy list, having won several astonishing trophies, including; 9 Serie A titles, 1 UEFA European Championship, and 4 Coppa Italia. Unfortunately for the defender, he didn’t win the UEFA Champions League title throughout his about 2-decade-long career. Leonardo Bonucci is considered one of the best defenders of his generation, and he is renowned for his technique, ball-playing skills, and tackling. Bonucci’s Profesional Football Career Bonucci began his professional career with Inter Milan, having joined the club’s Under 19 side on July 1, 2005, for a fee of €40,000. During his first stint in Milan, the 37-year-old went on loan to Treviso and AC Pisa. Leonardo Bonucci left the Nerazzurri to join Genoa on July 1, 2009, for a fee of €4 million. Subsequently, Bonucci moved to Bari for a fee of €10 million, before being snatched by Juventus on July 1, 2010, for a fee of €15.50 million. The man who was born in Viterbo, Lazio, left the Bianconeri to join AC Milan on July 21, 2017, for a fee of €42 million. Leonardo Bonucci returned to Juventus on August 2, 2018, for a fee of €35 million after spending a season in Milan. Moreover, Bonucci left the Turin-based club in 2023 to join Union Berlin on September 1, 2023, following the expiration of his contract with the side. Leonardo Bonucci exited Union Berlin on January 11, 2024, due to his limited playing time at the German club. Why Leonardo Bonucci Joined Fenerbahce The defender opted to join Turkish giants Fenerbahce as he was keen on being amongst Italy’s contingent for the European Championship in 2024. He made 23 appearances during the 2023/24 season, scoring 1 goal and providing 1 assist in all competitions – figure collated for his spell at Union Berlin and Fenerbahce. Anyway, manager Luciano Spalleti released his provisional squad for the 2024 European Championship on May 23, 2024, and unfortunately for Bonucci, he was also excluded from the list. He played an influential role in the Azzurri winning the 2020 European Championship, as he displayed his defensive solidity and alertness all through the tournament. Leonardo Bonucci made 679 club career appearances, scoring 46 goals and providing 13 assists across all competitions.
