Here's how Agunyi-Ironsi took over power.

- *January 15, 1966 coup:* A group of army officers led by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu overthrew the central and regional governments of Nigeria, killing the prime minister Tafawa Balewa and trying to take control of the government in a failed coup d'état.

- *Aguiyi-Ironsi takes power:* Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Commander in Chief of the Army, assumed power as Head of the National Military Government.

- *Previous head of state:* He took over from Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who was killed during the January 15, 1966 coup.

- *Duration of rule:* Aguiyi-Ironsi ruled from January 16, 1966, until his assassination on July 29, 1966, during a countercoup led by Northern officers.
