Food Charity is the equivalent of Food Bank here and it's the same challenge they are going through. Refugees and international students storm the food banks and it got to a point where some of them put out notices that the food bank was not for international students but locals. 2 Likes |

tensazangetsu20: USA is far easy than the UK. For my masters back then, it’s $11k per semester for school fees. Graduate school gave me tuition remission of $5k. I got graduate Assistantship of $6k. What that means is that, I did not pay 1kobo for my schoolfees for all the three semesters I used in school. Infact at my third semester, I got a big bargain of being a research assistant to one professor who want to give me more money that can cover for my stipends, but I just said I want to graduate jejely. It is only in the USA where people come land into the country without having $500 and they will still hustle it out one way or the other with school fees. You can go and cry to the graduate school, cry to the departmental head, run to other department to look for work. Even if worst come, you can still graduate without paying that school fees, they won’t just allow you to generate transcript or give you your diploma. Don’t ever compare USA to UK my brother, they are wide apart. Below is the email I just sent to the graduate school, and I got $5k straight. It was Fall semester then and you can see August date. 3 Likes

LegendHero: What happens after your masters bros. You have 3 months to find a job to utilize your OPT. 1 million applicants for the H1B visa that leads to a green card. Also many companies will not employ since you will require sponsorship. It's not the school it's what happens after. |

tensazangetsu20: —After my own masters, I applied for OPT and I got a job before graduation already so I just rolled onto the job with my OPT. —The first year I got into the H-1B program, I was picked in the lottery and by October that year, my H-1B got active. —Then my company filed my green card straight after that. Now for other people: —Everyone can get OPT and can even get STEM OPT if it’s engineering and etc. That means you have 3 years in total to use for that. —it’s true that you need to get a job within few months for your OPT to still be active. But if you don’t get that job, people usually go and do volunteer job with Red Cross and etc. your OPT will still be active and you can continue to search for jobs. —Even if you don’t have job, people defer their graduation or enrol for second master or PhD. —If you are not under a spell, you will sha see one job within 1 to 2 years that will put you on properly. —If you are engineering/software or general STEM, some big tech companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Cisco, Deloitte, KPMG, Accenture, EY, Visa, and etc usually do sponsor students. Things only got a lil bit worse with Biden era and Covid where job recruitment slowed down. —For H1B, if they put you in every year for the 3 year your OPT got active, you’ll be picked at least once. 90% of the people I know get picked. —Some companies don’t even need H-1B, they file your green card straight from OPT. Many people don’t know this. One of my guys at Microsoft got his green card through OPT alone. It just depend on company policy. And if worse come to worse and you no see job after 1-2 years, then you marry an American citizen for green card. I won’t advise this route. 1 Like |

lastkingsman: Lol even that isnt easy. Every country is difficult and most people are too laid back and stupid. The US after school laws are the most brutal amongst all developed countries. The F1 visa isnt an immigrant visa. You have 3 months to find a job to switch to your OPT or get out. |

LegendHero: You were lucky you got picked in the H1B lottery. Most people dont. Theres over a million applications and only 80000 h1b visas given every year. Theres nothing like 90 percent of people are picked. The stats are all there. Also how do you get green card from OPT without filling for it through Eb2 or Eb1 which you can do from any place in the world. 1 Like |

tensazangetsu20: Bro, when I graduated, ALL of us in my department got jobs before graduating. What I just did back then was aggressively attending all those NSBE conferences and I every info session companies come to do on campus. H1B lottery systems have been refined. When Trump came in, students with masters/phd in USA are given more preference, there was a way they set it up then. Legitly, almost everyone I know since I graduated and the other people I mentored got their H1B within the first 2 trials. Don’t look at the numbers, it is deceiving. Most people in India just bombard the portal with multiple entries to secure H-1B pick chances and USCIS already understood their games. You can get green card through OPT straight, I am not talking about EB2, that’s a different route entirely. I am at the mid-senior level at my job, I know what I am telling you. Companies file for student straight from OPT to green card, it all depends on their company policy. If you’ve ever filed for a green card before, in all the forms you fill I-485, I-131, I-765, and etc, do you ever see USCIS ask any H1B question for work green card route? No, that’s the clue. Most people don’t do it just because companies prefer to file H1B to green card rather than just OPT to green card. 1 Like |

tensazangetsu20: You are right. Job search should start right from the second semester. Attend everything you can attend. Try to hustle for internship and if you can’t get it, it’s fine too. However, I won’t blame students that got here between 2021 and now. Recruitment have slowed down so much in USA. Most companies have hiring freeze and etc. You will still be seeing the job listings online, but they are there just to fulfil the PERM requirement for this companies. So if you are applying to them, they will just keep denying you. We hope by 2025, the economy will pick up and companies start recruiting massively again. |

AmericanIdiot: They are not lazy o, most Nigerians who japa through student visa knew that they had to work real hard. But this particular university really fvcked them up badly. From cutting down their installments from 7 to 3, to locking them out of the school portal thereby denying them lectures and other activities, to reporting the defaulting students to immigration office for deportation. Are you telling me that this is the only university in UK where foreign students defaulted or all Nigerians in that University alone are lazy? |

LegendHero: The truth is that most UK citizens hardly go pass university degree. Upon all the options available to them... Council loans, student loan, government subsidy, University pegging school fees below 10k pounds. They hardly go. Instead they most prefer apprenticeship and it is fully funded by council tax and they are paid 6 to 8 pound pee hour to learn this skills. Even most universities are now offering what they call degree apprenticeship in a bid to attract British citizens to incorporate skills alongside study. Still yet them no send. 2 Likes |

Re: Nigerian Students In UK Seek Help From Food Charity by LegendHero(m): 8:34pm On Jun 02 |
Love800: There are other ways but I don’t know much about them so I won’t be able to advise well. —Marriage Green card route: You find someone in USA who is a citizen who will like to marry you. Then you do marriage and they start the process of filing your green card to bring you here. —Visitors Visa (B category): You can find someone to send you an invite. It could be to a conference, to a graduation, and etc. But the chance of getting visa for visitors is like 10%. So if you have money to play with, you can just use it. —H1B: You can apply aggressively to companies in USA through LinkedIn and hope one can recruit you. Then they can file your H1B and then bring you to USA. I know some guys that come to USA through this route, there is also another visa type L-1 or so that allow this too but your company need to be multinational for that. Na only student visa I Sabi well well. |
Re: Nigerian Students In UK Seek Help From Food Charity by LegendHero(m): 8:39pm On Jun 02 |
Love800: I can tell you about EB visa. They are visa route that allow students usually masters/phd to get their green card right from when they are still a student. It is usually tied to them partaking in research and proving to the USA government that they are special. Just imagine a student that did research that give the cure for cancer. You know that kind of person is very important to USA economy, so USA allow such person to get green card right from there as a student by filing for himself. I just used cancer ask an example, people use even smaller research to get it. EB1, EB2, EB3 are just used to delineate the level. EB1 could be individual with mad extraordinary abilities, EB2 usually for students that have Masters/PhD and those can file for themselves, EB3 I think is for professionals or skilled worker and you can have BSc, I don’t think they care about masters here. |
