The session between the National Assembly leaders, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has ended in an impasse, setting the stage for the earlier-announced nationwide strike to start on Monday 03 June 2024.

The meeting was steered by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajuddeen Abbas.

It was called with the aim of persuading labour to shelve its planned strike action over minimum wage demands.

Responding to the appeal from the Senate President, TUC President Festus Osifo said that the strike will commence as planned, pending discussions with their organs.

BACKSTORY

The tripartite minimum wage negotiation between the labour unions and the Federal Government had ended in a deadlock, as the unions rejected the government’s latest proposal for a ₦60,000 per month minimum wage, from the current ₦30,000.

Organised labour initially presented ₦615,000 as their monthly minimum wage demand but lowered it to ₦497,000 and lately to ₦494,000 on Tuesday 28 May 2024.
