Where did you ppl hear 2live crew from In Nigeria in those day?
Nigeria radios didn't play 2live crew songs back then in the early nineties, it was x-rated lyrics for that time as far as I remember as a millennial was too young then.
only rap songs I heard from radio in early 90s was from snoop dog, MC hammer, vanilla ice,Biggie,Tupac, heavy d,queen latifa our own junior and pretty, weird MC etc.

You remind me of so many funny things.

We had American neighbours in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but they returned to the United States in 1985. One of them came visiting in 1989 or 1990 and we were watching music videos and he was shocked. "They're swearing in that video", he exclaimed. His shock was funny to me.

Someone called us once from the UK and was boasting about the movie that she just watched. It was a highly anticipated movie and she just watched it in the cinema. We told her that we also just finished watching the movie. She didn't believe us, so we told her what happened in the movie.

Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s you could easily watch 2 Live Crew videos in music video compilations that were rented from video clubs. We were members of Video Mart and Cosmo Video Club from around 1986 till around 1991. They often had movies that had only just been released in cinemas (and in some cases, they had movies that were not even out), they had music video compilations, award shows, football and wrestling events, etc.

2 Live Crew songs were also often played at parties and you also read about them in music magazines.

A little bit of context first.

There was a huge talk show war in America in the late 1980s and early 1990s. There were many popular talk shows like the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Sally Jessy Raphael Show, the legendary Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, etc.

Some people developed the idea that the best way to break into the market and challenge the established legends above was to shock people. This led to things like the Jerry Springer Show and Geraldo.

Well, what better way to shock your audience than to bring the 2 Live Crew on the show? That's exactly what Donahue did in 1989.

They actually began the song with the clean version, but they switched to the dirty version within a few seconds. The audience in the studio can hear the dirty version, but you can't because those words have been beeped out.

This is a shock to Donahue's audience, but it is child's play and very tame compared to what usually happens at 2 Live Crew concerts.

Forget about 2 Live Crew, just focus on the audience.

Can you hear the Santana sample (Oye Como Va)?

I called this song Spanish Fly, but its real name is

2 Live Crew - Mama Juanita (1990).

Oh men! One soldier down.

I still have their music tracks among several classics from back in the 1980s and early 1990s on rotation. Controversial and raunchy songs they had but that was what propelled them into global prominence and that was how I got to know of 2 Live Crew and their censored and uncensored songs in the late 1980s heading into the early 1990s. Color Me Badd was another music group that had a few controversies back in the very early 1990s in their music tracks but that was small compared to that of the 2 Live Crew.

Colour Me Badd was no where as vulgar as 2 Live Crew, but I remember when someone was playing this song on my cassette player and her father shouted "Turn that thing off"!

naptu2:
Obviously you can't do a Color Me Badd playlist without adding the anthem. This is the original video. Lots of people (including me) thought that they were all black, so this video was a shock.

Ah tick tock you don't stop
To the, ah tick tock you don't stop
To the, ah tick tock you don't stop (Ooooh oooh oooh ooh ooooh)

la la la la la la

I wanna love you down
I wanna sex you up!

This was the song that annoyed her. It was a humongous hit in 1991. I am still searching for her angry response. She sued them and won 35% of the royalties. (They didn't only sample the bassline, they actually sampled her voice).

So many legends are dying and it's so sad.

She sued Colour Me Badd for sampling this song (she won and was given 35% of the royalties of I Wanna Sex You Up) and then she released another version in which she criticised them (I'm still searching for that version).

Betty Wright passed away yesterday. This is her classic monster hit. An uncountable number of people have sampled this song.
