The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has granted an additional 100 Saudi Riyals as “pocket money” to each of the state’s 1,868 Hajj pilgrims.

The pocket money comes a few days after the governor gave the pilgrims $186,800 to make up for the shortfall in their Travel Basic Allowance for the Hajj pilgrimage.

The gift of the additional 100 Saudi Riyals “pocket money” was revealed in a report shared on the official website of the Lagos State Government on Thursday.

According to the report, the state Commissioner for Home Affairs, Olanrewaju Layode, made the announcement while addressing the pilgrims at Alsaad Flower Hotel 2, Misfalla, Makkah, after his arrival on Tuesday.

The commissioner, according to the statement, announced that Sanwo-Olu gave “each of them another 100 Saudi Riyals as pocket money for their stay in Muna and Arafah in addition to the $100 shortfall in the Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) for pilgrims on the third and fourth batches who are yet to collect theirs.”

He charged the pilgrims to reciprocate the state government’s gesture by praying for the governor and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, to fulfil all the pledges made to them before they departed the state for the holy land.

Layode told the pilgrims that the commitments made by Sanwo-Olu had been honoured, including covering the costs for their sacrificial rams, providing funds for their Ihram garments, and facilitating visits to historical sites in both Makkah and Madinah

He explained that he brought the funds to fulfill all the pledges for the pilgrims on behalf of Sanwo-Olu, urging them to reciprocate these kind gestures with fervent prayers for the governor, his deputy, and the state as a whole.

The PUNCH reports that the Federal Government also said it paid N90bn to subsidise this year’s Hajj pilgrimage, against the backdrop of the prevailing forex crisis in the country.

Priority misplaced. Subsidizing hajj at this time of economic uncertainty?? Can't the hajj thing be postponed to next year. I am not against any religion but state finance and even the federal Government should stop all these religious pilgrimage subsidy. They should only help to airlift intending pilgrims if they must be involved. Hard times calls for hard decisions. That money spent here can help set up many lagosian above proverty.

Hajj is a private matter, why are we funding it? In a nation where we cannot afford that same 100 Saudi Riyals as minimum wage?

I read the headline alone and I'm already angry, if I now read the article, I just might do something I'll regret.

Talk about misplaced priorities. It's the very reason countries where religion hold sway are usually backward or even stagnant economically...

It's so disheartening to see Africans claiming Islam and going for pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. These Arabs are not what Muslims think. Islam is a no no and pilgrimage should be cancelled because it's a drain on the resources of poor African nations.

It's all in a bid to steal tax payers money. They will give 200 Pilgrims "pocket money" and claim to have given 2000 people. All na 419. Zero transparency , zero accountability. BARAWO Government.

People are hungry they are busy claiming to give GHOST money to those who can afford to get on flights to Hajj.

Stop funding pilgrimage trips. Both hajj and Israel. If anyone wants to go on pilgrimage they should take care of their trip.
Stop wasting money!!!

This is not a waste of money, pilgrimage is the most valuable project any government in Africa can execute. You know why? Because we are meant to be enslaved in which ever way possible.

Slavery has not ended, white slave master put the chains in our hands and legs, the black slave masters put it in our minds.

Let those who have eyes to see, see what the world is doing to the people of the Most High Elohim, our farmers are being killed by Fulani herdmen and boko haram, we can barely afford to eat, yet will have millions in dollar to carry out pilgrimage.

We are the true people of the book. Please research your history, most west Africans are the true Israelites. Build a personal relationship with the Father, not with pastor or any religious organisation.

Look up for our redemption draws near.
