In a decisive vote, Premier League clubs have overwhelmingly supported the continued use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) for the upcoming 2024-25 season. Despite vocal criticism from some quarters, the vote resulted in a resounding 19-1 in favor of retaining the system. This decision follows Wolverhampton Wanderers’ unsuccessful attempt to scrap VAR, citing its negative impact on the relationship between fans and football and the integrity of the Premier League brand.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had officially proposed to the Premier League in May that VAR be removed, arguing that its disadvantages outweigh the benefits of marginal accuracy improvements. Despite their relegation to the Championship, Luton Town’s manager Rob Edwards voiced his opinion on the matter, expressing a preference for limiting VAR to offside decisions only.
