In a decisive vote, Premier League clubs have overwhelmingly supported the continued use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) for the upcoming 2024-25 season. Despite vocal criticism from some quarters, the vote resulted in a resounding 19-1 in favor of retaining the system. This decision follows Wolverhampton Wanderers’ unsuccessful attempt to scrap VAR, citing its negative impact on the relationship between fans and football and the integrity of the Premier League brand.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had officially proposed to the Premier League in May that VAR be removed, arguing that its disadvantages outweigh the benefits of marginal accuracy improvements. They emphasized that VAR has led to numerous unintended consequences, including delays and a reduction in the excitement of the game. In response to the vote, a Premier League spokesperson acknowledged the need for improvements to the system to address these concerns.
Despite their relegation to the Championship, Luton Town’s manager Rob Edwards voiced his opinion on the matter, expressing a preference for limiting VAR to offside decisions only. Edwards argued that other uses of VAR have detracted from the spontaneity and enjoyment of football, as players and fans are left in suspense over whether goals will stand.

Fan opinions on VAR remain divided. Many supporters echo Edwards’ sentiments, feeling that VAR’s current implementation disrupts the flow of the game and diminishes the joy of celebrating goals. Some fans suggest that if used correctly, VAR could be beneficial, but stress the need for a significant overhaul of its application. Others point out that while VAR aims to eliminate glaring officiating errors, its current execution falls short of expectations, calling for better training and defined processes.
Following the vote, Premier League officials committed to several enhancements to improve the VAR experience. These include reducing game delays through semi-automated offside technology and enhancing in-stadium communication with fans via announcements and more detailed replays on big screens.
Although disappointed by the outcome, Wolverhampton Wanderers accepted the decision, acknowledging the Premier League’s efforts to address the concerns of clubs and supporters. They emphasized the importance of ongoing improvements to ensure VAR enhances the integrity of the game and the overall matchday experience.
