Let me attempt Ngwa. What's your name? Afagi o giri? Do you want to eat? Icholo ilo nri? How are you? Hmm. . . |

Like a true Ohuhu that you are. lol |
Re: Igbo Dialects by odumchi: 7:19pm On Dec 26, 2011 |
I'm pretty sure the first one is Ngwa but I'm not too sure about the second one. Do correct me and show us Ngwa lest an "ohuhu" trample upon your dialect. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by ChinenyeN(m): 7:31pm On Dec 26, 2011 |
The only thing Ngwa about the first one is the "giri". The second one isn't Ngwa. |

@ afam NIKE, NGWO and AWKUNANO.igbo name ỌKUNANỌ. Are the three clan that own enugu capital. Nike are in enugu east and Ogui Nike in enugu north. NGWO Own 90% of enugu north but ar settled in udi l.g.a. AWKUNANO or ỌKUNANỌ Are in enugu south. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by Afam4eva(m): 2:15pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
I'm from Awkunanaw in Enugu-south and i don't know if you're talking of the same awkunanaw. We don't speak anything like what you wrote up there. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by nedu210(m): 2:40pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
if u ar frm awkunanaw why dint u post ur dialect, am frm enugu but my friend frm amaechi wrote the dialect. Or dont other awkumanaw speak the same dialect with amaechi |
Re: Igbo Dialects by Chyz2: 2:45pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
afam4eva: Please, you all need to get that spelling changed, seriously. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by Afam4eva(m): 3:18pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
nedu210: I'm from Amaechi(home of Jim Nwobodo and Ken Nnamani) specifically. You have to note that Awkunanaw is part of the Nkanu clan. The same dialect is spoken throught Nkanu with very little difference. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by nedu210(m): 3:33pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
i knw awkunanaw ar part nkanu, just like Ngwo unọ ar in enugu north, but al nkanu do not speak the same dialect. Just like obodo eze in enugu south do not speak the same dialect with amaechi, agbani, or ozala. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by Afam4eva(m): 3:35pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
nedu210: Like i said, we speak the same dialect with little variations. here's what Nkanu dialect is like: How are you : Imere eka What is your name : Gunu bu efa ghu Do you want to eat now? : Icho iyi ye kita |
Re: Igbo Dialects by ChinenyeN(m): 5:14pm On Dec 30, 2011 |

Re: Igbo Dialects by Afam4eva(m): 5:33pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
Awkunanaw Is part Nkanu. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by nedu210(m): 6:27pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
afam like i said be4 am not frm awkunanaw, a frnd frm amaechi wrote dat, i knw he live in g.r.a. Enugu, but if any one that knw hw to speak awkunanaw dialect can give a good and undiluted translation of awkunanaw dialect its an amaechi person cos other awkunanaw territory ar also occupied by non indigen if i may use dat word. Again dat dialect u wrote is agbani, nkanu is just a l.g.a, Sayin dat al nkanu speak agbani is just lik sayin al udi or awgu speaks udi or awgu. Again u said u ar frm uzo uwani why amaechi nw. Any way if u do not trust that dialect as awkunanw dialect, not as agbani dialect, wen i go bck to enugu i wil get an undiluted amaechi man to give me awkunanaw dialect. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by Afam4eva(m): 6:48pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
nedu210: I'm an Amaechi man and i'm in a good position to tell you about our dialect. Awkunanaw, just like Agbani, Obe and other places are part of the Nkanu clan which speaks the same dialect with little variations. What i wrote is the nkanu dialect and not agbani cos agbani is part of Nkanu. What you called awkunanaw dialect does not even come close. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by Obiagu1(m): 10:12pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
nedu210: If you try to break it down like that, then we'll end up with over a million dialects in Igboland. As far as I know, as someone that grew up in Enugu, Nkanu is the name for all those that speak similar dialects in Nkanu area. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by Obiagu1(m): 10:19pm On Dec 30, 2011 |
Dialects in Enugu are Nsukka, Nkanu, Udi (including Ngwo and Nike), and Oji (supposed to be in Anambra . I think they speak Awka dialect, not so sure any more). In Anambra we have Onitsha, Awka, Nri, Nnewi and maybe others. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by ChinenyeN(m): 12:36am On Dec 31, 2011 |
So Nike and Ngwo are of Udi clan? And Awkunanaw are of Nkanu clan? If such is the case, the naturally the list will have to undergo some revision. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by nedu210(m): 3:27pm On Dec 31, 2011 |
@obiagu being in the same l.g.a with a clan does not mean u speak de same dialect with all the clan in the l.g.a. oji river l.g.a is in enugu, and with awgu, aninri and oji, we al ar called greater awgu, But dat doesnt mean we all speak the same dialect. @afam i want 2 tell u something but let me 4get and as u only few question. 1. do u knw dat awkunanaw clan is made up of 6 to 8 town or even more, with 3 of those town in nkanu west lik akegbe-ugwu, obuofia and one other, and the rest in enugu south. 2. wat makes language a dialect. 3. Do u knw dat long be4 people in nkanu east and west came to be knwn as nkanu., amechi, uwani obuofia and the rest hav been knwn as awkunanaw. @chinenye No list is undergoin any thing. 1. NIKE is not part of udi, nike is far bigger and greater, more ifluential than udi. Go and read about enugu, and get information about nike, they ar co-associate of aro and never depended on any clan, and has the biggest territory in enugu which extends to enugu east, nkanu east and their ogui brothers in enugu north. U cant learn the nike dialect by growin up in abakpa nike, ogui nike and other nike urban town, but u can learn the nike dialect in izza nkwubo nike and some town and villages dat hav not been urbanized. 2. NGWO ar in udi l.g.a but ar not udi, just like nike they accupy udi l.g.a and own larger area of enugu north. Ohum, okpatu, ijabu ogana and others, are clans in udi with their own dialect, so ar clans in other l.g.a that make up enugu state. Like i said be4 wen i go bck to coal city i will sample the opinion of awkunanaw ppl and if the its the same den u wil update it, but if not the same i wil get the correct one. mana afam nwa nnaa ịga abụ onye uzọ uwanị bulụ kwa onye amechi. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by ChinenyeN(m): 4:20pm On Dec 31, 2011 |
Well, I'm only asking questions so this list can get sorted out properly. I'm not from Enugu. In fact I'm 100% ignorant of the area and the people, but I still would prefer that the list be as accurate as possible, and this means that the people here, involved in this 'discussion' of which-is-which have to come to some kind of consensus on the issue. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by NRIPRIEST(m): 8:59pm On Dec 31, 2011 |
Obiagu1: What do you mean by this ?? The only dialects that can stand alone here are Nnewi and Awka; you didnt add Ihiala areas but they speak a different dialect. Idenmili,Oyi,Njikoka,DunukofiaOnitsha,Ogbaru,Anambra east/west,Ayamelum,Ekwusigo and some others I cant remenber now all speak very similar dialects with little variations. Isuofia, awgbu, agulu, aguluezechukwu, amobia and more lga around that area speak something like what the Awka ppl speak. There is nothing like Nri dialects and Onitsha dialects. I bet you if you hear an Idenmili and Onitsha speaking you wont be able to tell who is who. |
Re: Igbo Dialects by nedu210(m): 10:37pm On Dec 31, 2011 |
am waitin 4 to say something cos i asked him a question. @NRI Hw many dialect ar in amambra, wat dialect do nteje speak? I hav a frnd frm the town. My wife is frm agulu eri, and the dialect she gave me look 2 central with just AWA as afa or aha. Chinenye ka anyị hafụ okwu ndị ọkunanọ, ọbụlọ ihe ahụ bụ nsogbu'm kịta. Onye nwelu onu ndi ozo ya weta, na oge na adighi anya aga'm eweta onu ndi mgbowo, mgbowo di na kansul ime obodo awgu, asusu ha kacha di iche na ime obodo awgu. Nee asusua'm ga ede anya mke ọma. MGBOWO. Aa ngulu be ịla eme la ebee. Sam kue emeka sa ọbia la ebea. UGBO Ọ ngoo bu ihe ime kahụ. Kam kuo emeka ka ọbia kan. This two town are one clan both in awgu. Wat do u say about a town in anike awgu l.g.a that one of its village speak a very different dialect frm the other villages. Anahọkwa'm ekwu na ihe afam kwulu maka ọkunanọ bu ashi ma ya ekwukwana na nke'm bu ashi, ebe anyi enweghi onye aka ebe. Lee igbo izugbe asusu mgwowo na nke ndi ugbo ahu mu dele.
