The labour leaders are just stupid.

The law does not empower labour to dictate what the minimum wage should be,that is the statutory duty of the tripartite committee.

It is not by agreement but recommendations based on facts on ground and the various positions of the tripartite members.

There can never be an agreement based on the current tough stance of labour, but the country must move forward.

Government need to address what is making labour clamour for an increase MW first, which is the cost of living. Increasing MW will only be a temporary solution to a long lasting problem.Address the bottleneck issues making cost of living on the high.

The federal minimum wage, currently at N30,000, was last raised in 2019, when the inflation rate was between 11 and 12 per cent.

However, the purchasing power of the naira has since been eroded by 276 per cent (compared to what it was in 2019), hence the clamour for an enhanced salary structure.

So Buhari increased salary from ₦18k to ₦30k when inflation was between 11-12%.

So can someone tell us what inflation is saying now and how many % it went up within 12 months of Tinubu?

This reminds us of the movie TITANIC!!

You see what your Tinubu is doing to Nigerians?

Getting his fellow politicians richer, those who have cars and houses already still being given cars and houses including 300% pay rise.

Is this not wickedness?

Unfortunately, a democracy cannot address it FIRST. Cost of living is mainly dependent on the people themselves, not government. Go to the market and see the wickedness in every section. That's beyond government.

stop this nonchalant attitude and send money to the hands of real owners.
When workers get paid you will notice that is there money in circulation in the country. Most workers their salary hardly last for 7days, they will spend it. send to your mother, brothers, sisters, market people, paybills, transportation, farm, and health. so, the issue of 0.3% of 250m people didnt arise and wont stop the other rest of the people to go on with their normal activities.

shortgun:
Nigeria needs a president who is equipped with management skills to coordinate and direct all sectors of the economy towards economic growth and prosperity which will ultimately improve the living standards of the Nigerians.
Tinubu clearly is not this person.

Tinubu is only good at falling down and uttering gibberish at every turn..!!

Why do you think Nigeria is nose diving since the vagabond paid inec to declare him president and people with guns to help protect him from the people?

The outlandish policy of the government actually amplify the wickedness you see out there. The onus is still on them to bringing it down with favorable economic policy that will bring down the price of petrol and diesel and likewise address some socio economic issue like insecurity. If government fail to address this, then they should be ready to be increasing minimum wage on a yearly basis.

He is right: it is part of what the thread talks about. Read, for example, the submissions from Olowookere:

Government and private sector workers

In his recent analysis, the Managing Director and Chief Economist of Analysts Data Services and Resources (ADSR), Dr Afolabi Olowookere, said regardless of how the recommendation in the new template for salaries might differ...both parties would find a common ground and in the final outcome there would be more money for labour.

He, however, said that when the labour finally “wins” the minimum wage battle, another thing that would remain obvious was in dissecting the discrepancy between current low-wage and high-wage workers...

Olowookere said, “The implication is that the government will be the major institution that will pay the minimum wage. The private sector is largely informal.

“The question now is,...

“What also happens to those in the informal sector, even though they are working, they are not earning the minimum wage. The only benefit they can derive is to increase prices of goods and services to the extent that they can squeeze out from those who have benefited.”

What policy will bring down the price of petrol and diesel? There is no problem on government side to increase minimum wage on a monthly basis, it will increase their salaries too. It is the economy that will bear the brunt. The FG can decide to borrow to pay salaries like in GEJ era but there will be no money to do anything else than pay salaries for less productivity. After FG pays and refuses to employ others into civil service. No employment in Police, Army, Immigration, NSCDC, doctors, teachers to mention a few. Then State governments will retrench/sack workers, reverse employment, demote many, withhold promotion and owe months of salaries. Upon that, they will not pay the agreed minimum wage Then of course the private sector, which is in the majority with more than 60% of the employment will not comply with such increase in minimum wage, but will raise every cost based on news about increase in minimum wage. And more inflation will surely set in. i guess you like this address and readiness to be increasing minimum wage.

Findings revealed that 15 state governments are yet to implement the old wage of N30,000. They are Abia, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Niger, Borno, Sokoto, Anambra, Imo, Benue, Taraba and Zamfara.

What excuse in heaven's sake do Bayelsa & Delta have for not still paying the N30,000 minimum wage?

Only 5.3 million Nigerians working in the formal sector will benefit from the new minimum wage, available data have shown.

In other words, of Nigeria’s total population of 229 million people, 76 million (33.2 per cent) are workers, but not all of them will directly benefit from the wage increase because of some factors, analysts say.

A back-of envelope calculation by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that 1.2 million (23 per cent) and 0.3 million (six per cent) work with the federal government, drawing salaries from the Consolidated Revenue Fund, and government-owned enterprises respectively.

Also, another 1.3 million (25 per cent) and 0.7 million (13 per cent) work with the state governments, their agencies and local government areas. The remaining 1.8 million (34 per cent) work in formal private organisations.

While experts believe that civil and public servants deserve more in terms of their take home packages, they, nonetheless, observed that for the federal and subnational governments to address the wage crisis in the country, they have to do more in reducing the cost of living and provide enabling environment for businesses to thrive, which will in turn improve the livelihoods of millions of citizens that are wallowing in poverty[/b]
