 To represent Nigeria in Switzerland
Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has clinched the first position among Nigerian universities at the 16th edition of the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition held from 14th to 21st May, 2024.
The University was represented at the competition by Okechukwu Amarachi Sharon and Okeosisi Amarachi Miracle, both 500 level students of the Faculty of Law. At the end of proceedings, the university emerged first out of over 20 Nigerian universities that competed at the event. Globally, about 200 universities from Africa, America, Asia, Europe and United Nations regions participated in the virtual competition.

The Nelson Mandela World Human Rights World Moot competition is an international Mooting Competition for Law undergraduates and Masters’ students in universities across the world. The 16th edition of the Competition adopted a hybrid format, with the in-person grand finale scheduled to take place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland
The university representatives at the competition demonstrated unparalleled expertise, creativity and passion for human rights, which helped them to become the best in Nigeria, and thus qualified to represent the country at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland scheduled to hold from 15th to 19th, July, 2024.

Sharing their experience at the competition, the Students’ Staff Adviser and Coach, Barr. Paschal Olebara, noted that the remarkable feat was a testament to the transformative power of education and the unwavering commitment of their faculty towards creating a better world. He maintained that the success story was in line with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor, geared towards making AE-FUNAI a world class University.
He further assured: ‘’We are confident that our students will continue to be beacons of hope and champions of human rights, inspiring a new generation of leaders to follow in their footsteps’’, while looking forward to becoming the world champion at the grand finale of the competition in Switzerland in July this year.

While commending the students for their outstanding performance at the competition, the Acting Dean, Faculty of Law, Dr. Eseni Azu Udu, noted that their successful journey was a testament of their unwavering dedication and the faculty’s unrelenting commitment to excellence. He reiterated that their achievement has not only made the university proud but also underscored its commitment to nurturing future leaders in the field of human rights.
He extolled the faculty staff adviser and team coach to the competition, Barr. Olebara for his contribution, stressing that under his guidance, the students navigated the complexities of human rights law with remarkable heights.

Dr. Udu further appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Elom for creating an enabling environment where students can excel and soar higher academically, noting that the welfare of staff and students of the Faculty of Law, were top priorities of the Vice-Chancellor.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Elom while congratulating the students for their outstanding performance at the 16th Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition, commended their prowess, adding that their achievement has put the university on the front burner of international discourse.
He assured them of his administration’s sustained support and exposures to enable them excel in their academic activities and other aspects of life in order to contribute meaningfully to national development He further applauded the staff of the Faculty of Law for their resourcefulness and dedication to duty
