I delivered closing remarks at the 31st Afreximbank Annual Meetings and the 3rd AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum, ACTIF 2024, where I focused on the role of subnational entities in driving the African agenda, using Lagos State as an example.

Lagos State has demonstrated the importance of subnational governments in shaping the African narrative. With a strong focus on internal revenue generation and strategic partnerships, we have become a hub for investment and technological advancements.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) symbolizes a pivotal initiative that requires collaboration between national and subnational levels to succeed. Despite challenges, the AfCFTA aims to create a unified trade channel for African countries.

By leveraging partnerships and embracing African solutions, we could build a prosperous future for the continent. Lagos truly offers an inspiring model of what is possible when Africa thinks big and thinks ahead.

In the near future, our ambition is to, in addition to what we are already accomplishing, become a strong and solid link between Africa and the Caribbean, building on longstanding historical connections and modernizing them into a partnership that is an unstoppable global force.

We already have so much in common, and if we synergize properly, there’s no limit to how far we can go.

And this is where Afreximbank comes in, as inspiration, an enabler, a facilitator, and financier. Already, they have established themselves as an excellent facilitator of bridge-building between Africa and the Caribbean.

Together, we will continue to drive progress and innovation for the benefit of all Africans.

During my time at the AAM and ACTIF2024, I had the pleasure of connecting with former Vice President @ProfOsinbajo, former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Prime Minister of The Bahamas Philip Edward Davis, and Professor Benedict Okey Oramah, President of Afreximbank.

These events, AAM and ACTIF, are dedicated to tackling the pressing issues impacting African and Caribbean economies, fostering economic growth, and facilitating trade and investment both within Africa and with the diaspora.

During the sidelines of the AAM and AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum, I had the opportunity to connect with several leaders from the Caribbean region.

I engaged in discussions with His Excellency Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the President of Guyana, as well as held meetings with Dickon Mitchell, the Prime Minister of Grenada; Philip Pierre, the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia; Chester Cooper, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Bahamas; and Mia Mottley, the Prime Minister of Barbados.

Some of these meetings had the President/CEO of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, adding a significant perspective to our discussions.

Our interactions were strategically focused on fostering collaboration and exploring opportunities for mutual growth and development.

We exchanged views and ideas on trade partnerships, investment initiatives, and sustainable economic strategies to strengthen ties between our nations and drive collective progress.

President Oramah, H.E. Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of AUC, Dr. Roger Ferguson, former Vice-Chair of Federal Reserves USA and Dr. Yemi Kale, Group Chief Economist of Afreximbank; launched the 2024 African Trade Report titled, ‘Climate Implications of the AfCFTA Implementation’.

Africa accounts for 3% of carbon, yet bears the brunt of climate change. The report therefore assesses the relative impact of the AfCFTA on carbon emissions in Africa. AfCFTA has the potential to accelerate growth and promote structural transformation of #GlobalAfrica and serves as an important vehicle to creating wealth and prosperity for all Africans.

The report also encompasses the maiden edition of Afreximbank’s African Trade and Economic Outlook titled, ‘A Resilient Africa: Delivering Growth in a Turbulent World’.
