When Should A Child Start School? by Lanrelagboi: 6:18am On Jun 22 |
Couple of months after my daughter was born, we had a conversation about school with friends and I insisted that she would not start school until she’s 3 years old. Many people (including close family members) tried to persuade me that she has to start school early or she’d be left behind. I said NO. At least this one is my child, my (with madam) decision is final. 92 Likes 7 Shares

From age 4 and above. There are several studies in support of this. Don't give in to any stupid pressure. Most people are just doing follow follow. 33 Likes |

The earlier you enroll your son/daughter in school even he/she is just 2 years old This my generation are not like the other generations. This is the Gen-z generation where technology is everywhere and their kids are much much more smarter than the previous generations 11 Likes 3 Shares |

The ideal age is three. By then, the child can now speak well and understand instructions. Parents also will observe the child to know when to put them in school. Some children are very intelligent. My daughter started school at age of 2yrs and 2months. 5 Likes |

Well done Op @Lanrelagboi for not yielding to such pressure. The major reason we Nigerians rush kids through school is solely to brag. It's not uncommon to hear a parent boast that "My 7-year-old son is in JSS2". It is not a cool thing to do! Let your child organically progress. Your child might be book smart at a very young age, Yes! But let them develop physically, psychologically and emotionally too. Europeans and Asians don't take such nonsense as a norm, but only Africans who have never put a thought as to why the educational system is structured that way, thinking they know better. The son of my former Lebanese neighbor is 15 or 16 and I think he's just writing his Junior WAEC. Dude has been acing all his subjects effortlessly with minimal competition. Such child will almost never be bullied. We might think it's cool and cliche, but the physical, psychological and emotional toll it takes on children is unimaginable. This is coupled with the annoying fact that break-time and P.E classes for children are fast disappearing in schools. Primary 6 is more or less an optional class now. Too bad. In the end, all these becomes counterproductive, as the child may struggle to cope with a class unsuitable for their age. Many children end up being taken advantage of, bullied, sexually harassed and initiated into vices. 55 Likes 3 Shares |

Lanrelagboi: I like how blunt you sound in your write up... 😆 Honestly, strong head is underestimated, especially by our parents and elders who will think you're just being stubborn, meanwhile the 2 are different eveb though they're similar.... Hahahaha 😂 My brother make no body pressure you at all ooh.... My boy will be 3 in October and he already knows most of the nursery rhymes since he has been schooling from home 😜 What do they do in the creche apart from to go there and watch Coco melon? Yes! Cartoons 🤣 all day long!!! (I know this because we enrolled him last year and later pulled him out because it's a total waste of our money) Use that money to subscribe your cable TV, get a kiddies pad and data subscription for your child and there you have your full creche at home. Those who enrolled their kids at an earlier age do so because 1). They(both parents) are working and do not have the time to take care of their kids. 2). They just want to ease themselves of the children's wahala 😁 Lastly, from a personal experience, a child should be enrolled in school only when he/she has started speaking so the child can be able to report the teachers to you their parents just in case of any abuse and that's between ages 3-4 years. 28 Likes 3 Shares |

Which school: formal or informal schooling? If formal, which level: crèche, nursery, primary, secondary, etc? If primary, minimum of 5yrs and standard of 6yrs and above, depending on the child's maturity rate. Maturity here is in terms of physical, mental and emotional. Thanks so dearly for allowing your child sometimes at home before bothering her with academic issues. If one has the resources, your child should be at home and schooled by her mom and gadgets at home for 5 yrs before venturing into formal school setting. In this way, the family's core values must have been instilled in the child and the structuring of the child for future challenges will be easier for parents who have such qualities and plans. 11 Likes 1 Share |

Those that started school by putting their hands across their heads to touch the other side of their ears are the ones ruling now . While majority that supposedly started in their mother's womb are on social media focussing on what's entirely not linked with their future or destiny.. Bitter truth 26 Likes |

3 or 4 is okay Those that started before the age of 2, check well bother parents are working. So no one to look after the child. They had to quickly put him in school to enable them do their work 2 Likes |

For me,I enrolled my son in a daycare at a year and few months and it prepared him to stay without his parents then when he was 2 I introduced him to the school environment when he started pre school. By 3 he was already in nursery 1 and he caught up very well. 4 Likes |

Mine started pre nursery at 2 mainly because no one would be at home to take care of her and she needed company to develop as she has speech delay . She still enjoy maximum home play when she's back. If need be, she may have to repeat a class to be with her mates. All cost on me 2 Likes |

Except the parents are too busy with work especially the mother, there is absolutely no need, in fact not advisable to rush your child to school before his/her 3rd year. At least let your children grow up without any stress for 3 years. Is that too much to ask for ![]() 14 Likes |
