Why Do Nigerians Become Less Religious When They Travel Abroad? by uche87(m): 10:23am On Jun 22 |
One day, I decided to ask a friend abroad some pertinent questions. I said: “When last did you pray for journey mercies while travelling by rail? When last did you pray against power cuts? When last did you bind and cast the spirit of poverty? What about the prayers against your ‘village people’? I concluded and waited for a response. He struggled to give me a definite answer. He finally gave up with a smile. Osahon George Osayimwen is a UK-based journalist. 79 Likes 16 Shares

Ask the average Nigerian to describe their idea of God and Jesus and 99.9% of them would describe a WHITE man. When they travel abroad, they are surrounded by white people. They are in heaven. The fact that 100% of the problems plaguing them in Nigeria has already been solved by the white people in the new country HELPS. Religion reigns SUPREME where poverty and ignorance is prevalent. The poorer and less educated a people are, the more susceptible they are to religious MANIPULATIONS. That's why the core Northern parts of Nigeria is a hot bed for religious EXTREMISM. Poverty and lack of education makes them easier to brainwash. 264 Likes 27 Shares |

Both on the right and left side of the Ibadan expressway is filled up with churches and other various worship centres who bought several thousand plots of land just for the sake of building a place in other to swindle people and you begin to think what is really the problem with us as country ![]() Just imagine if those place are factories for productions or even farmlands, I'm not sure the country would be so messed up the way it is right now. Truly government have their own fault but we the citizens too have a lot of faults too especially those who are rich enough to site an establishment to help the economy but chose to build big churches all round the country. 121 Likes 11 Shares |

The premise that Nigerians, especially recent japarians don't or rarely attend churches is not entirely true. Judging from Nigerian pastors' conferences and gatherings, the attendance numbers are very high and the venues are always filled. In Canada and the UK, church attendance increased largely due to recent migrants from Africa and the Philippines. Additionally, for most recent first-generation migrants, the Church is the closest replica to home and a good place to dwell amongst their kindred and commune/socialise in a familiar environment. However, as years go by and these migrants acclimatise to their host countries, they gradually reduce their attendance, and this continues to the second generation. Compare those who emigrated during 2005 - 2010 to post-Covid. 26 Likes |

Imagine praying for Nepa to bring light. Praying so your car won't spoil due to bad roads Praying to get a job Praying not to get kidnapped Praying so you don't fall sick coz you know our health system is messed up and only the rich can afford quality health services Praying so a lecturer won't put you eye and fail you deliberately simply coz you refuse to spread your legs for him Imagine many more things we pray for and immediately you get abroad, you discover these things are available in their abundance, even if na u, will u still be prayerful? 37 Likes 7 Shares |

uche87:Not all Nigerians, so you can modify the title to "some". Until the realization and understanding that this walk with God is a fellowship and not "give me, give me", then it will dawn on many that irrespective of where you are, the fellowship continues. 9 Likes 2 Shares |

![]() ✝️✝️✝️☪️☪️☪️🔯🔯🔯 The issue is that, in Nigeria or third world African countries, the duties your government, father or spouse etc are supposed to do, they fail and instead of holding them responsible you turn to God to perform the duties of man. Abroad, work is readily available for you, therefore you don't need to write application letter to take to your pastor or imam to pray over it, apply anointing oil and 7 days fasting to beg God to give you the job. In Nigeria, If your husband is irresponsible and refuses to buy food and pay school fees, you report to your pastor who may call the husband for counselling and also you the wife to pray to God to turn his behavior around. Abroad, you don't need pastor or God to beg him. Just report him to authorities and they will compel him to pay a certain monthly upkeep to his family. If he fails for just one day, na prison get am. Again, abroad, Students seeking university education don't need to pray and fast to for JAMB to answer them, because schools are everywhere and even if you no get money, scholarship or students loan is available, therefore God doesn't come into the picture. In fact, too much religiosity is a symptom of a failed society and hopelessness on the side of the citizens😢😢😢😢 Any society that is overly religious, you will find that poverty is serious in such societies. See Muslim northern Nigeria for example. They are ready to slaughter and burn in the name of their prophet, but are the poorest, disease ridden, illiterate societies in Nigeria. See Afghanistan, Niger Republic etc. 22 Likes 5 Shares |

There are more jobs and work places than worship centers abroad. So, you are more likely to get to work than church. Unlike in Nigeria where you are paid fixed salary, in abroad they are mostly paid hourly rate. Work Monday to Friday and then make overtime pay ( usually time and half) on weekends. It’s good easy money that is hard to let go. Any day you make going to church a priority, you sacrifice more than a 500k or more ( when converted to naira) . For instance if you are a nurse and gets 40 dollars per hour. Working that Sunday shift will give you 60 x 12 = $720 (less tax). Everything is stress and bills abroad . Even the church wants you to give from the little you are managing. In abroad, money is managed and calculated to the last dime. So it’s better to avoid unnecessary stress. Also most things people pray for in Nigeria is already available abroad. Except for real spiritual needs which you can settle with God through payers in your house. Even when you go to church, they don’t keep you for more than an hour, unlike in Nigeria. if you are sick, you can medical attention, hungry you can get food assistance, even housing. Structures are in place, provided by government to help those in need. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Majority of what we pray for have already been provided for there. Security, good welfarism etc. But that doesn't dispute that God exists and in control of human government either you believe or not. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Because they now realise you don't need to even offer God 10% to be rich if the government did the right thing. Take away riches from the dictionary of Nigerian church goers; both their daddy GOs and them will leave the church. Sadly, the Catholic Church I used to admire is tilting towards that direction. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

Religion is quite complicated if you enlighten yourself on human history especially how medieval Europeans lived and the how cruel Arabs were. Religion breeds values that help humans to live in peace, fairness and togetherness, unfortunately arabs and Europeans continue to twist it to suit themselves. Recently African pastors and imams. Africans were the best of all. We had organised systems and we always believed in God in our way. 3 Likes |
