The Lagos State Government, yesterday, issued a 14 day removal notice to owners of buildings and structures at Sangotedo area of Lekki and Okota, Isolo areas of the state, which were built on drainage channels.

Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said this after an inspection tour to various contravention sites and on-going drainage enforcement projects in Ago Palace Way, Isolo, Sangotedo, Lekki and Ikoyi areas of the state.

Wahab said the state government was determined to restore sanity in the state.

He said: “The era of environmental indiscipline and nuisance are over in Lagos. We will not shy away from enforcing all relevant laws irrespective of whose ox is gored.

Lagos despite its peculiarities as a coastal state with low-lying terrains and a high population density among others has remained afloat because of various measures put in place by the government.”

Wahab, who said the ministry has strengthened its Drainage Enforcement activities said: “I tell people climate change is real and there is a cholera outbreak, We must know that all these things are Interwoven We must all be responsible and responsive as a people, people cannot continue to brazenly abuse the environment and expect that there will be no consequences.”

At Sangotedo by Lagos Business School, the Commissioner said: “A 48 hours contravention notice have been served to owners of buildings lying within the channels and 14 days abatement and when that elapses the law will take its course.

“We will commence full enforcement after the expiration of all notices with an option of voluntary compliance.

“Lagos despite its peculiarities as a coastal state with low-lying terrains and a high population density among others has remained afloat because of various measures put in place by the government.”

Emuhu in Delta State is wasting.

You people are going to buy land in a place where you will be killed and frustrated.

A place where they forget they are blacks like you but cry foul when White man spits on them in America.

Go to emuhu, osisioma, ubulokiti etc and buy yourself a land go God sakes

Good one from the government. Sanity is returning to the state. I know what he meant when he made the statement below.

We will not shy away from enforcing all relevant laws irrespective of whose ox is gored.

After all, Chief Okeowo had his property demolished too.

I am familiar with the Sangotedo location,I will tell you wholeheartedly that there are some individuals that believe they can do and overdo
For those who are familiar with this area, the ongoing road from Ajah to Epe is at the Lagos Business School, precisely around Pertocam filling station
The Engineers are trying to create a channel for the water but the canal that was established to serve as an outlet has been totally blocked,by who? By so called developers and Omo onile who sold this land to them
I know because a client took me that same property and I strongly advised him not to buy because the results from the Lagos State showed that the area was not usable
I plead to all those reading this, get a professional before you buy a property anywhere. You can sue them later if everything goes south

I went somewhere around Sangotedo a few years back with a relative, I saw first-hand how 'omo-onile' were sand-filling a canal at the end of an estate which was supposed to accommodate the waste water.

Lagos state is at the brink of collapse environment-wise. In fact, I suggest they even introduce environmental sanitation to make everywhere cleaner and free the gutters.

Our brothers will cry ethnic victimisation since it's happening in their masters region and not in their barren region.
We also expect Obingo and his gangs to become emergent human right advocates since it's happening in their masters region the great Yoruba race.

Tokunbo wahab is doing a great job, I haved watched interviews where he addressed issues around these demolitions and steps taken to reduce collateral damage, hes brilliant and wants to do the right thing BUT SADLY it is reactive not proactive costing citizens alot of losses running into millions.

Until we address how these illegal structures came to be with or without permission or titles as it where we are walking backwards not forward. Government should prevent wastage of resources by not just government but its citizens many who are innocent or unaware in all of this.

Government Must be proactive to forestall financial wastage and destruction of properties then citizens can really praise them for a job well done.

Good one as long as it will bring sanity back to lagos, the level of illegal building along canals are too much. The state government should be proactive in dealing with illegal building not until the person must have finished everything before the government will remember the place is not approved for such structures.
