Anioma State Creation Remains Oldest Agitation In Nigeria’s History -Ned Nwoko

As part of efforts towards promoting positive enlightenment and tutulage to some opponents of Anioma State Creation within and outside Delta State, Nigeria and beyond, The Senator Representing Delta North Senatorial District in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, Sen. Prince Barr Ned Munir Nwoko, has cleared doubts on the questions on the reality of the proposed Bill, says agitation on “Anioma State Creation” is the oldest in Nigeria’s History started since 1950.

Daily Independent learnt this today being on Monday, July 24, 2024 in a letter which was addressed to Anioma People written by Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko which was made to some group of Journalists in Asaba Delta State capital as the Federal Lawmaker tasks Anioma People; critical stakeholders, political leaders, residents on the importance of unity of purpose towards achieving results.

Ned highlighted the future political, socio-conomic benefits aimed at sustainable development of the area, not for any personal interest as reason for re-activating the agitation as he enjoined Anioma people to possess hearts full of hope, determination and patriotism for their dreams as he harped on the possibility of actualizing the creation of Anioma State.

The letter by Senator Ned Nwoko to Anioma People reads in parts: “Dear Noble Anioma People and Esteemed Stakeholders. I write to you today with a heart full ofhope,determination and patriotism not only as your Senator but as a fellow Anioma person who shares our collective dreams and aspirations.The creation of Anioma State is not just a political goal; it is a deeply collective mission that I have been committed to for many years”.

“The demand for Anioma creation is unarguably the oldest agitation in the history of Nigeria,started in the 1950s by the people of Aboh and Asaba divisions in the Western regional House of Assembly. It is a struggle that has spanned decades and one that I believe we are closer than ever to achieving. This journey began long before I became a senator.I have been actively involved in the protracted agitation for Anioma State through various efforts and engagements.

“I vividly remember the central role I played,arranging crucial meetings between the then President Olusegun Obasanjo and our respected traditional rulers led by the Asagba of Asaba,late Obi Professor Chike Edozien on two occasions between 1999 and 2003,during my tenure as Member representing Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency in the House of Representatives”.

“These historic meetings were pivotal moments in our quest for Anioma state,as were the discussions I facilitated with former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. As your elected representative,it is my solemn mandate and avowed duty to reignite this effort with renewed vigour.But more profoundly,I stand with you, shoulder to shoulder,as someone who deeply understands the significance of this noble cause.

The creation of Anioma State,with Asaba as its capital,is not a self seeking political ambition—it is a vision for a brighter,more prosperous future for all of us. Nobler still -a golden chance to consummate the deepest dreams of our forebears and our cherished prospects as a people”.

“This initiative is not about division; it is about empowerment.We are not at war with any group.We are not fighting against the South or the Central regions. It goes far beyond linguistic,cultural and sociological gratifications.It is a peace move of progress.

A movement for sustainable development.We are striving to harness our abundant resources and exceptional manpower to build a state that reflects our potential and meets our needs. Our goal is to ensure that Anioma stands tall and proud,with the governance and representation it deserves”.

I have vigorously been rallying both at the presidency and within the Senate to gather the necessary support for Anioma State. This is a joint effort, and I urge our brothers in the House of Representatives to join in this crucial endeavour.Together, we have the strength and blessing to turn this dream into reality. Consider the benefits: Development at our doorsteps- villages and town.New society.New life for our our people. Anioma State would mean three senators instead of one, more representatives in the House, additional seats in our State Assembly, and closer, more responsive and fulfilling governance”.

“This increased representation will amplify our voices and ensure that our unique needs and interests are addressed. Imagine the impact of having more commissioners,more government offices,more opportunities.Think of the upswing effect – efficient administration.

Consultations have been ongoing for years, and we will continue these efforts until our goal is achieved.We do not need to start a new round of consultations, as extensive groundwork has already been laid”.

As the revered Asagba of Asaba once said on May 5, 2001 at a special summit of Anioma people : ‘We should all resolve to have a united Anioma state.We have the men,we have the resources.Let us march forward with courage and vision,conscious of the fact that the weak are victims of history’. During my campaign, I promised the kings and Izu Anioma that I would champion this cause and also advocate for constitutional roles for our traditional rulers.I was elected on this promise, through the sovereign ballot of democracy and I stand by my word”.

The problem in this new state creation is that other regions will now start their own agitation to balance the number of states per region. That the North West has seven states so other region should be made seven... At the end Nigeria will now have 43 states and capital😅


By then, I hope the upland Rivers State and its adjoining Igbo communities in both Bayelsa and Akwa-Ibom state will now come to their senses like Ndi Anioma to join their kins in the South East

It's about an additional state for the south East not a mere creation request. That is why people are having to chose it over Orlu state. If there is greenlight for more states which I doubt, all zones including the East, will have the opportunity to present their request.

Does it matter? Anioma will stay forever. Even if he becomes governor, he will only stay for 8years. So why pointing that out?
So, the interest for the creation of Anioma state is bigger than Ned's ambition.

Nothing wrong about Senator Nwoko aspiring to have Anioma State crested. Unfortunately, state creation is a near impossibility in Nigeria. Those that drafted the constitution made sure of this by placing too many hoops along the way. When you read what the law says must be done to create a new State, you will run for your life

But the agitation for Anioma State only highlighted something amusing, that many Nigerians still don't understand that the law does not recognise anything called South South or South East

The constitution only recognised 774 local governments and 36 states. So if you gather any group of states and call them North North, West West, East East or South South, its only in your head, they don't exist in Law as a group

They have now become "cousins" but when they were pointing them out to be killed during Asaba massacre, they were enemies. Have you ever seen a referendum where a small 'no' voters form a region? Or an election where an opposition supporters have a seperate government? Na only for Igbo matter una dey lose una senses. You're even lucky he didn't include Isoko who have a lot of historical links with Igbos. I'm sure they'll vote a resounding "yes".

Delta south deserves their own state they own the resources used in developing asaba ibb wife used her influence in making asaba the state capital instead of either warri or ughelli I don't even understand why people from delta south are comfortable with the current arrangement and not agitating for their own state.

Why would you go for injustice of denying the Orlu state proposal, the Orlu area most merits the sixth state considering history of creation of the five states in the southeast. Why bring Anioma from southsouth but punish Orlu that is bigger than Anioma, more viable than Anioma?
