On June 25, 2024, Gabriel, widely known as General Asabuja, announced the reactivation of the defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). This declaration comes amidst the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Nigerian Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. General Asabuja declared his support for Governor Fubara and vowed to ensure the safe escort of all caretaker chairmen to their respective local government areas within the state.
