President Bola Tinubu has decried Nigeria’s power generation capacity, saying that the capacity of 4.5 gigawatts is shameful.

Tinubu called for the collaboration of the Presidential Economic Coordination Council (PECC) members to increase Nigeria’s on-grid electricity capacity.

This was disclosed in a statement by the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngeglale, who said the President spoke on Thursday during the PECC inauguration at the State House in Abuja.

"We are determined to do that with your cooperation, collaboration, and recommendations. As a nation, it is so shameful that we are still generating 4.5GW of electricity,” the President was quoted as saying.

"We have the challenge of energy security in Nigeria. We need to work together to improve our oil and gas sector, and we must also increase electricity generation and distribution throughout the country.

“We must increase our oil production to two (2) million barrels per day within the next few months and we are determined to remove all entry barriers to investments in the energy sector while enhancing competitiveness.”

The Nigerian leader also highlighted the need for innovative solutions to the country’s economic challenges, stressing the importance of public-private partnerships in driving economic reforms.

He announced measures under the economic stabilisation programme, aimed at stabilising the economy, enhancing job creation, and fostering economic security.

Dwelling on energy security, the President said the initiative — which includes power, oil and gas — aims to increase on-grid electricity to be delivered to homes and businesses from about 4.5 gigawatts to 6 gigawatts in six months.

According to Tinubu, the scheme also aims to increase oil production to 2 million barrels per day within the next 12 months.

Earlier, Tinubu announced a N2 trillion economic stabilisation plan to revive Nigeria’s struggling economy.

You have spent 1 year in office and hasn't increased it by 100mw even

When people talk about electricity as an engineer ( mechanical) I wonder what is difficult about generation and transmission of electricity ooh I have always wandered

To produce electricity you need a magnet and coil of wire... Just move one relative to the other boom u have electricity

The whole nuclear, hydro, gas, steam, coal and the likes are just how to turn the magnet relative to wire coils

Transmission is just aluminum wires ( the most abundant metal on earth) from power plant to distribution centers and those are just big transforms

I still don't get why we don't produce and distribute enough electricity makes little or no sense sha

If it's shameful, what has he done to salvage the situation? Distribution companies have just increased their tariff for Band A customers and everyone seems cool with it.

Nonsense

Tinubus leadership has been crucial in Nigerias progress, much like Nelson Mandelas role in South Africas transformation.

Very shameful. How can a country of about 200m people generate just 4.5mw while Brazil of same population generates 196gw. It's really a shame in 21st century.

How can the country be industrialised. Why the power to run the industries. Walahi, too much wahala dey this country.

Am very positive that before the end of tinubu's first term, Nigeria shall be great again.

First term of sanwo olu, we called him unprinted names like point and kill because no one was feeling him but now if not the best governor in Nigeria he's one of the best rated.

Nigeria of our dreams shall come to pass in my generation and I will be here to witness it.

From epileptic power generation to insecurity to the economy to the value of the naira to food shortages to untold hardship, to corruption in Government under Tinubu's watch, it is shame all the way, and that's what the APC political party has brought on Nigerians.
It is indeed shame!
