Because the Soviets invaded their country. They joined and accepted US funding because the Soviets were killing their people. The world is not black and white. Soviets/Russia is not blameless in everything, they are not Saints or gods. Accepting this doesn't make you a western puppet. It just means you are realistic. Imperialism is wrong whether Soviet or western.
