The Bible made me understand that Ishmael was Abraham's first son and that he(Abraham), was to sacrifice his first son to God as an offering for his faithfulness and obedience to the Will of God.

The Bible says it's Isaac that was to be the sacrificial lamb but the Quran says it's Ismael.

If you ask my opinion, I would take sides with the Islamic injunction about this story for two reasons:

1. That Sarah after all she suffered to have that child, she wouldn't have allowed Abraham to even attempt sacrificing Isaac for any reason but could frame up Ishmael for the sacrifice for fear of him being the beneficiary of Abraham's wealth after his death.

2. That Ishmael was actually Abraham's first son in spite of his purported illegitimacy.

After giving birth to Ishmael, the son of Abram, Hagar and her son are banished from the house of Abraham (at the request of Sarai)
Abraham had already sent Hagar and the son away long before the sacrifice was demanded of him.

Abraham never saw Ishmael as his son from day one because Hagai wasn't his legitimate wife that's why he doesn't care what Sarah will do to the slave girl and her pregnancy.

Secondly when God promised Abraham that his children will become many throughout the earth he wanted to accept that Ishmael was the promised child but God told him that it's not Ishmael but Isaac the child to be born by his legitimate wife! Genesis 17:18-21

Hagai herself has been told by God's angel that Ishmael will breed terrorists and not the type of children that will produce the fruit of faith! Genesis 16:11-12

So when Sarah demanded that Hagai and her son be sent away Abraham was told to let go of the child since he's not the promised child that will produce the fruit of faith! Genesis 21:8-14

The lineage that has ever produced prophets mentioned in the Quran itself is that of Isaac there was never one single prophet from the lineage of Ishmael!

So when the scriptures say Abraham's only child it was evident that the child in question is the one promised to him because that's the promise that led him out of the land of his ancestors he surely knew Ishmael couldn't be his only child after all it's now evident that the delay came due to Sarah's barrenness his impotency on his own part. Genesis 25:1

It's that heritage Jacob bought from Esau with a bowl of stew the promise of the fruit that will save mankind from their sins {Genesis 12:1-3} which is Jesus Christ! Isaiah 9:6

Who told you Abraham is the epitome of morality?
Well if you must know morality depends on the geographical location you come from what is called morals in one geographical location may be evil in another.
What the Bible say about Abraham is that he was upright in the face of the God who created all things!
