Man hospitalized after ingesting 7 bottles of hand sanitizer

A 26-year-old French man suffering from severe alcoholism started drinking hand sanitizer to satisfy his alcohol cravings, setting off a chain of events that landed him in a local emergency room.


What happened?
The patient, who has not been named, visited the emergency room (ER) complaining of severe abdominal pain. It was later revealed that his real motive was to obtain high-concentration alcohol-based hand sanitizer at the hospital.

On arrival, the young man appeared distressed and, according to medical professionals, “vocal at times.” Despite his complaints of pain, examination revealed that his abdominal condition was normal, but his general hygiene was poor and his heart rate was slightly higher than normal. He was given intravenous medication, including morphine, but he continued to complain.

Further tests, including an abdominal scan, were carried out but did not reveal the cause of the pain.
