How To Cycle Safely On The Roads by blogpoosts: 10:26am On Jul 11
Tragically on the rise in the U.S. as of today, accidents involving cyclists often have life-changing consequences, and not just for the victim. But, by heeding a few safety tips when on the roads, cyclists can limit the chances of having any kind of accident, fatal or otherwise.

Here’s how to stay safe when riding the best road bike brands on America’s roads:

Always wear a helmet
Despite not all states mandating the wearing of a helmet when cycling, doing so can significantly reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 70%.

Give your bicycle the once over before starting out
Take a couple of minutes to check your bike over before getting on it, such as its gears and chains, lights and reflectors. Not all accidents involving cyclists are caused by unexpected bumps or potholes, or reckless drivers; equipment malfunctions can just as easily cause you to crash.

Wear reflective clothing
Reflectors on a bicycle can help drivers see you, while bright or reflective clothing is even more effective. Remember that if a driver can’t see you, they won’t be taking any action to avoid hitting you.

Always keep your hands on the handlebars
No matter how great your sense of balance, keeping both hands on the handlebars at all times is a simple way to prevent you from being thrown off your bike because you couldn’t swerve or brake to avoid someone or something, in time.

Know your bike and signals
Intersections are common places for accidents involving bicycles to take place, but by using the appropriate hand signals, you can help drivers understand your intentions more clearly.

Try to avoid distractions
While we all know how dangerous it can be for drivers of vehicles when they’re distracted, the same is just as true for cyclists. Don’t be a distracted cyclist; try to concentrate fully on your surroundings, at all times, and where possible, keep all electronics out of reach in your backpack or cycle bag.

Cycle like a driver
Don’t be tempted to weave in and out of traffic or race across multiple lanes when cycling on the roads, or you might find yourself in a nasty collision with a vehicle. Ride predictably, as most drivers do, and you can avoid catching them off guard.

Go with the flow
Riding your bicycle with the flow of traffic is essential, as accidents are far more likely to take place when you cycle against the direction of other road vehicles.

Keep off the sidewalks
Sidewalks are for pedestrians, and even though you might think it safer to ride on them when there are large vehicles on the road, you’re much more likely to lose control by doing so, as you try to avoid people or obstacles.

Use lanes dedicated to cyclists
With many cities and municipalities having built dedicated infrastructure for cyclists, riding in bike lanes is a safer option for anyone riding on the roads in the U.S. nowadays. So, if you see a bike lane, be sure to use it; this will keep you and others using the roads, safer.

Even if you always invest in the best bicycle brands, this isn’t enough to keep you safe on the roads if you don’t also follow the simple safety protocols listed above. Heed them, however, and you should be able to enjoy many hours of unhindered, unadulterated, cycling fun!
