Wole Soyinka has proven, beyond doubt, that no matter how educated a person is, certain vices can never be removed from him. In his case, it's tribalism and I'm not Igbo incase you are suggesting.

The moment of arrest. I'll paraphrase, but try and get the book, "You must set forth at dawn: Memoirs" by Wole Soyinka (Bookcraft, 2006).


Wole Soyinka was on his way to safety, when he realised that some of his followers might not have gotten the message that they should disband and close down their base (in Ibadan). He became worried that some of them might either proceed on some hare-brained action of their own, or get arrested.

He drove back towards the base, saw a young collaborator and got her to act as a courier.

However, there was an armed policeman waiting near the base. Although he arrested Soyinka, he told the professor that he would escort him wherever Soyinka wanted to go, "in case there are urgent things you wish to take care of-sensitive documents and things like that. They will come and search your house, you know. It's the least I can do for you Mr Soyinka."

Whoa! That's an awesome tribute for the Godfather and respected internationalist, Professor Wole Soyinka. Soyinka who is a very fluent French speaker has done a lot
in the field of international relations globally and he usually visits Cuba every year to interact with members of the Afro-Cuban and larger Cuban community within the Yoruba religion (Lucumi) and cultural space, and he related well with Fidel Castro when he was alive.

It was from Professor Wole Soyinka's book, "You Must Set Forth at Dawn" that I first got to know back in the 1990s about the town of Bekuta in Jamaica's Westmoreland county where descendants of Yorubas (from among the Egba folks of Abeokuta) who moved to Jamaica from Sierra Leone in the 1800s to work as indentured workers after the plantation slavery had been abolished in all British colonial territories. Soyinka had visited Jamaica back in the 1980s and 1990s and that's how he ended up visiting Bekuta which is a named derived from Abeokuta in Nigeria.

Massive 90 cannon shots for the iconic 1986 Nobel laureate! Thanks to Soyinka for adding to mankind's body of knowledge in his own unique way through satires and more.

It's abysmally appalling that many educated ones can't distinguish the pyrate confraternity and cultism. From the Oputa panel interview, he even dissociated pyrate confraternity from cultism. Honestly, for Nigeria to be better, ethno-religious sentiment has to be excluded for objectivity and sincerity.
