The Igala people are an ethnic group primarily founded in in kogi state, Nigeria, with smaller population in neighboring states. They have a rich cultural heritage and speak the Igala language, a member of the Niger-Congo family.
Beans soup popularly known as "obo-egwa" is a significant dish in igala cuisine. This traditional soup is typically made from beans, palm oil, pepper and other local ingredients. Historically, beans soup has been a staple due to its nutritional value and the availability of beans in the region. The dish is often enjoyed during festivals, family gatherings, and as a comfort food symbolizing the resourcefulness and agricultural life style of the Igala people. Here are the ingredients and guide in preparing a delicious Igala beans soup (obo-egwa)

Ingredients
- 2 cups of beans (black-eyed peas or brown beans)
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 cup palm oil
- 1 teaspoon ground Okpei/uziza seeds
- 1 tablespoon crayfish, ground
- 1 tablespoon ogiri (fermented locust beans)
- 200 grams smoked fish or meat (optional)
- Fresh greens (bitter leaf, spinach, or ugu), chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste

Prepare the Beans:
Cooking beans soup Begin with preparing the beans. This begin by soaking the beans overnight to reduce cooking time and enhance texture and to wash the beans, to remover beans shells, making sure that the shells are well remove and no more. Drain and rinse the beans, then pour the washed beans with half cup of oil in a large pot of water until they are soft and tender. This usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Drain and set aside.

Put a separate large pot on fire, heat the palm oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and stir until they are translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute. Add shopped Tomatoes and Spices: Stir in the chopped tomatoes, allowing them to cook down and release their juices. Then, mix in the ground Okpei/uziza seeds, ground crayfish, and ogiri. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, letting the flavors blend.

Add your protein; first your smoked fish. And your meat (use any meat of your choice) to the pot. Allow the proteins to absorb the flavors and heat through for about 10 minutes.

Add the cooked beans to the pot with the aromatic base and proteins. Stir well to combine. Reduce the heat and let the soup simmer for another 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Finally, add sult, pepper and seasoning as needed respectfully. Wait for about 2-3 minutes before stirring your delicious obo-egwa. Add fresh green such as ugwu cent leaf etc: Just before serving, stir in the fresh greens. They will wilt quickly, adding a burst of color and nutrition to your soup. (Adding greens is optional because most igala did not want the greens in their beans soup while others want).
You ladle your beans soup into bowls, ensuring each serving has a good mix of meat and smoked fish respectfully.

Enjoy your homemade Igala beans soup (obo-egwa) with traditional accompaniment like pounded yam, oje-abacha, fufu, eba and it also go well with rice.
This hearty nutritions dish is perfect for sharing with family and friends, bringing a taste of Igala culture to your table.
