According to Wikipedia, Oral Roberts, an American televangelist started the modern-day prosperity gospel movement in the 1950s as a post–World War II Pentecostal movement .

The big boys in Pentecostal churches in Nigeria adopted the prosperity gospel and started living large like their mentor( Oral Roberts) - buying jets, building universities (unaffordable to most church members), living a life of luxury. They also learnt the manipulation skills from him -like telling people if he doesn’t raise $8m within 3 months he would die or that he saw a 900foot tall Jesus who told him to build a hospital! That’s why you see many church leaders lying and exaggerating in the name of Jesus’

Prosperity is good and it is the will of God that we prosper however there is nothing like a prosperity gospel or a prosperity minister! Jesus and the apostles never preached it rather they shared all they had together with the congregation such that no one in church lacked- that’s the true prosperity .
