In a bid to return Nigeria on the path to democracy, the Abacha military junta allowed for the formation of 5 political parties in 1996 to replace the previously existing 2 parties (SDP and NRC) that participated in the June 12, 1993 presidential election that was conducted by the Ibrahim Babangida regime, which the Abacha junta had disbanded after taking over power from the interim national government of Ernest Shonekan in 1993.

Those Abacha 5 parties,

1. United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP)
2. Congress for National Concensus (CNC)
3. Grassroot Democracy Movement (GDM)
4. Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN)
5. National Center Party of Nigeria (NCPN)

would later adopt Abacha as a consensus candidate in April 1998, with only some of CNC politicians (Alhaji MD Yusuf and Tunji Braithwaite) putting up some resistance and going to court on that matter, but the Appeal court rejected the suit by claiming it lacked jurisdiction over the case.

The aim of the Abacha transition programme was to hand over power to a democratic government on 1st October 1998.

National Assembly elections already held on 25th April 1998, while gubernatorial and presidential elections were scheduled for 1st August 1998.

Abacha died on 8th June 1998.

That’s what Bul@ba is trying to do now. Fake democrat

He hijacked LP, used Wike to hijack PDP, even APGA was not spared.

These structures of criminality cost money to maintain, and Nigerians are paying for them with hunger and extreme poverty from harsh anti-people policies

He learnt from his mentor

Actually, by now the 5parties = 1party state government would have continued to rule without any democratic freedoms that you now enjoy.

His son would have been preparing to take over from him like it happened in Togo with the Eyadema family.

Maybe Peter Obi would have continued working for the Abacha civilian regime, managing all the ports.

OBJ would have died in prison like Shehu Musa Yar'Adua.

Diya, Olanrewaju, and Adisa would have been executed later in 1998.

Sgt Rogers would have continued with his killer squad to eliminate any high profile Nigerian that oppose the Abacha government.

Abacha would have continued to promise that workers will smile soon, but would have continued to fight inflation better than the actual governments that came after him.

N1 coins could have remained useful, while labour might now have been fighting for N11,500 minimum wage.

What Abacha was trying to do in Nigeria is not possible. Nobody from any ethnic group can become a life president in Nigeria unless you want the country to split

Like Abacha like the current disaster on seat. The man is using all manners of subtle means to ensure he stays in office for a second time. First is LGA autonomy. Then next is the legislation to force only INEC to conduct LGA elections.

All good developments but trust, they are all laced with hidden motives given the alacrity the wicked NASS are expediting actions on these bills.

Things were better but not his govt.

The population was less. Loans were less. Corruption more centralized.

last two paragraphs are flawed.

Hardship is largely tied to political structure issues.

I can see Tinubu in that photo. So with all your struggles, nadeco and protest against the military and bad governments.

Now as Nigeria president, what shall it profit you if you don't turn Nigeria around for good and make the country a better nation ?

Your sacrifice and struggles would be in vain.
