Following the financial autonomy granted for the existence of the local government in Nigeria, the Senate has moved to establish the Local Government Independent Electoral Commission.

The upper house kickstarted the process on Thursday through a Bill seeking to establish a federal agency that will conduct local government elections in the country.

The Bill scaled first reading in the Senate on Thursday.

The Bill titled, “Local Government Independent Electoral Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024” was sponsored by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa, (APC – Niger East).

Purely own goal.

Reelection would be so easy. That must be a proxy request from the state governors.

Can the LG oversight themselves?

We run a system of government that spends every four years preparing for an election, Billions spent in the process, time spent and nothing achieved

Bul@ba is trying to divide Nigeria into LGAs so he can go directly to them and bypass the governors.

It's likely going to be a federal agency in charge of holding LG elections.

It's a good move in my own opinion.

Allow independent candidates without affiliation to any political party to also contest. This creates platform for genuine stakeholders that are oriented towards their communities development to be elected

Why not create a department in inec to handle Local Government elections

Why create a fresh agency that will increase cost of governance

The major problem with this tinubu administration is they never think tru the policy before implementing it, they don’t consider the big picture or the aftermath

Same thing happened with subsidy removal and naira floating

All this abracadabra is just to use the popularity of LG autonomy to setup a 2027 presidential election winning machinery.

The state electoral commission is still a problem and you want to bring the local government?

This Senate will finish Nigeria, like they are in competition with tinubu to see who will finish Nigeria faster.

House of Reps wants Abuja INEC to organise LGA elections while senate wants to set up LGA election umpires. I'm still wondering why many democracies haven't discarded this useless bicameral legislature.

So INEC can not be mobilized to be organizing LG elections, maybe in batches. They must find a way to be wasting more funds

This is very wrong and I don't know why people don't see it. This will lead to a complete state capture by the ruling party.

In true democracies like america, federal agencies are not responsible for conducting state elections. We have seen how the ruling party removes and makes governors at will.

If inec, a federal agency, is allowed to decide the electoral process of states in Nigeria, then the state agency for elections should be totally responsible for the conduct of local government elections in their domains.

In my opinion inec should only conduct federal elections while state elections agency should be responsible for state elections while local government elections agency should be responsible for local government elections.

This is the opposite of true federalism and we are just concentrating everything in Abuja which is very wrong. States needs their independence. We can't continue in this unitary system of government that is stifling development and promoting tribalism and political rascality.

Duplication of responsibility with inec. Additional recurrent cost. Our leaders are not cost-conscious at all.
