In a significant turn of events, a Kenyan court has temporarily lifted a police ban on protests in the capital, Nairobi, just hours before a planned demonstration was set to take place.

On Wednesday, the acting police inspector general banned protests in the central business district (CBD) and surrounding areas indefinitely, citing a lack of leadership that would ensure peaceful protests. However, the Milimani law courts in Nairobi disagreed with the decision and ruled that the ban remains suspended pending the hearing and determination of a petition filed by a Kenyan NGO challenging the police directive.

The suspension came as a relief to thousands of protesters who had planned to march to the president’s office in defiance of the ban. Police had deployed heavily around the CBD, patrolling the streets and cording off major roads leading to the president’s office.
