Often decided to watch another episode on Netflix than to engage in work and complete that pressing task? Or shortly surfing the web on Facebook instead of revising for the exam that is coming up? You're not alone.

Another problem that can be faced at work is procrastination, and it is present in the majority of individuals across the globe. But what is the purpose of all these? Learning the causes of procrastination is the key to eradicating this nuisance and improving on productivity.

The Problem with Procrastination

When people say that it is 3 o’clock now and I don’t have time to do that; it is not absolute lack of time management or lethargy. It is an unpretentious psychological behavior that can be very much connected with inner self and thought processes.

Procrastination implies that there are activities that we actively eliminate from our day to day routine and avoid because they make us uncomfortable in some way. This avoidance gives a break momentarily, but much when you stress up after avoiding what you are supposed to do, creating a cycle of procrastination.

Fear of Failure

Perhaps one of the most familiar enemies of time is procrastination and one of the most usual causes of it is fear of failure. Whenever a person is given a task that he or she finds difficult to tackle, the worry of not being able to do well mars the whole process. This fear can totally freeze us, making us delay the particular task to avoid a possibly detrimental result. In the case of procrastination, the myths give an insight as to why an individual postpones a particular task and if the reasons are rooted in fear, then the person can start facing those fears.

Perfectionism

It is also worthy to note that perfectionism can be considered as one of the main causes of procrastination. This kind of desire is intimidating to the extent that one feels inclined not to commence the act at all. Generally, perfectionists have very high standards to meet within the society, and the thought of not meeting these set standards makes them procrastinate.

Lack of Motivation

There are times in our lives when we are not motivated to work and that is why we procrastinate. If the task is not something that is exciting to the person doing the task, they easily procrastinate and delay doing the task. This is a main cause for procrastination, especially when it comes to tasks that we do not seem to have any interest in.

Objections to Overcoming Procrastination

Even though it is helpful to know the causes of procrastination from a psychological point of view, it is not always easy to deal with it. Below are some of the familiar complains you are likely to meet with as you try to address procrastination issues.

This short and pen statement is ‘’I Work Better under Pressure’’ & here Work is interpreted in a very broad way.

Lots of individuals think that they function more effectively when they are in a high-pressure environment, and that the favor putting things off until the last minute. However, this is in most cases a misconception. It may seem that the energy obtained from a threatened urgency can work on an individual for several hours, but this is usually due to the creation of mental stress and a decrease in the quality of work.

"I'm Just Too Busy"

Another objection often made is that the can is fueled by the excuse that one is too busy to start a task. This can sometimes be a way of procrastination, we can busy ourselves with other tasks so that we do not have to undertake the tasks that cause us anxiety.

Using time in efficient manner is one of the goals in personal time management that can be achieved if this pattern is recognized.

In the observations and reflections of procrastination article, the author illustrates procrastination as ‘I’ll do it when I feel more inspired’.

Another evasion is waiting for inspiration, which is as futile as the one mentioned above. As much as some work entail inspiration, calling, creativity and all that jazz, it is important not to wait for such a perfect moment to come before undertaking the job.
