Sen. Godswill Akpabio uncultured statement against Senator Natasha Akpoti is highly condemnable—Michael Sam Idoko

The recent statement made by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio against a female legislator, Senator Natasha H. Akpoti , Senator Representing Kogi Central is a stark reminder of the deep-seated gender bias and misogyny that persists in our society. Akpabio's comments were not only derogatory and disrespectful but also a clear violation of the principles of gender equality and respect for women.

The statement, which was laced with sexist and demeaning language, was a personal attack on the female legislator's character and integrity. It was a clear attempt to belittle and humiliate her, and it has no place in our political discourse. The fact that it came from a high-ranking official like Akpabio makes it even more unacceptable.

Akpabio's behavior is a reflection of a larger problem in our society, where women are often subjected to gender-based violence, discrimination, and marginalization. It is a reminder that our society still has a long way to go in terms of achieving gender equality and empowering women.

The condemnation of Akpabio's statement is not just about his behavior but also about the culture that enables it. It is about the toxic masculinity that perpetuates gender-based violence and discrimination. It is about the patriarchal norms that silence women's voices and marginalize their contributions.

The legislature should be a place for respectful debate and discussion, not a platform for personal attacks and gender-based slurs. Akpabio's behavior is a clear violation of the principles of gender equality and respect for women. It is essential to create a safe and respectful environment for everyone, especially women, to participate in politics and public life without fear of harassment or intimidation.

In conclusion, Akpabio's statement is highly condemnable, and he must be held accountable for his actions. His behavior is a reminder that our society still has a long way to go in terms of achieving gender equality and empowering women. We must continue to speak out against gender-based violence and discrimination and work towards creating a society that values and respects women's contributions.

While some may criticize Sen. Akpabio's statements, it's important to recognize his contributions to governance. His leadership as Senate President has the potential to unite and drive progress in Nigeria.

We all have our limits and when pushed to the wall, we tend to react differently. Akpabio is no doubt a very respectful and humble man. But sometimes, you have to reply fire with fire.
