Merle, also known as dapple in some breeds, is a genetic pattern in a dog's coat. It results in different colors and patterns and can also affect skin pigment. It also results in blue or different-colored eyes, aka Heterochromia. For example, a merle dog may have one brown eye and one blue eye. The merle gene is incompletely dominant, meaning a dog only needs to inherit one copy of the merle gene to have a merle coat. In other words, for a dog to be merle, one of its parents must have the merle gene. However, If two merle dogs are bred together, one-quarter of the offspring will be "double merles," a high percentage of which could have eye defects or be deaf. Therefore, mating a merle dog with another merle dog is deemed an unethical dog breeding practice. Merle can affect all coat colors and is a distinguishing marking of several breeds, particularly the Australian Shepherd. Although the name suggests otherwise, the Australian Shepherd is an American breed of herding developed in California in the 19th century. The breed is believed to have its origins in herding dogs imported, alongside sheep, from Australia to the U.S., hence the name. Australian Shepherds are one of the smartest dog breeds and one of the most popular breeds in North America. This medium-sized, athletic breed has a moderately long and wavy double coat that offers different looks including blue merle and red merle. The merle gene occurs naturally in Australian Shepherds Other dog breeds that can have a merle coat include: Australian Shepherd Miniature American Shepherd Collie Shetland Sheepdog Dachshund Cardigan Welsh Corgi Pyrenean Shepherd Great Dane Mudi Catahoula Leopard Dog Chihuahua Border Collie Pomeranian
