WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The Waco Police Department on Tuesday announced it is searching for additional survivors who were sexµally assaulted by Father Anthony Odiong, 55, a Catholic priest.
In March of this year, Waco police said they received credible information reporting that the priest - identified as Odiong - had committed a sexµal assault in 2012.
Waco PD said two charges of sexµal assault have been filed against Odiong and eight survivors have been identified so far.
[b]During the investigation, police identified up to five victims and learned Odiong was in possession of child pornography, an arrest affidavit states.

The affidavit states Odiong was using his iPhone and iPad to communicate with the victims and police obtained a search warrant to access Odiong’s iCloud, where they found multiple lewd photos of a girl, the warrant further states.
None of the photos showed the child’s face, however, police estimated the child in the photos was most likely 10 years old, the affidavit states.
Investigators said they confirmed Odiong was “in fact within McLennan County and the State of Texas” when he was in possession of the lewd child pδrn images in the iCloud.
Oiong, a priest originally from the Diocese of Uyo in Nigeria, also served as a priest in the Archdiocese of New Orleans from about 2015 to 2023. The Archdiocese of New Orleans dismissed Odiong from St. Anthony of Padua in Luling shortly after a Nov. 26, 2023 mass during which he made disparaging remarks about LGBTQ+ people.[/b]
Odiong served as a Catholic priest at St. Peters Catholic Student Center in Waco, Texas, and St. Mary’s of the Assumption in West, Texas, from 2007 to 2012. Odiong was arrested by the Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force in Ave Maria, Florida on July 16, and is currently being held at the Collier County Jail awaiting extradition to Texas.
Police in Waco said multiple women have come forward to tell similar reports of sexµal assault involving Odiong. The reports ranged from sexµal assault and indecent groping to financial abuse, police said.

Investigators believe there may be more survivors and are asking anyone who had similar experiences with Odiong to come forward. They applaud those who have already come forward and remind any additional survivors that they can come forward without the risk of being publicly identified.
Additional survivors are encouraged to speak to Detective Bradley DeLange directly, who will explain how the police department is committed to ensuring their confidentiality. Det. DeLange can be reached at 254 750-7609.
Waco PD says respect for any survivors experience is their highest priority. Survivors will not be required to go to court if they don’t want to and their name will not be made public.
“If you have been victimized by Anthony Odiong anywhere in the United States, we need to hear from you. You are not alone, and you do not have to continue to live with the trauma of this experience alone,” their Facebook post said. “The Waco Police Department stands ready to assist survivors, no matter where they may be.”

Odiong shared a statement on Facebook on April 26 in regards to the claims. He reminded readers he is innocent until proven guilty and described the allegations as “false, salacious, and a one-sided smear campaign.”

Catholic churches in Waco are administered by The Archdiocese of Austin. The diocese sent KWTX the following statement:
“The Diocese of Austin has learned that Reverend Anthony Odiong, a priest of the Diocese of Uyo, Nigeria, who served in the Waco area from 2006-2012, was arrested in Ave Maria, Florida. We stand ready to fully cooperate with law enforcement regarding this case.

“The Diocese of Austin remains committed to its Safe Environment Program and encourages anyone with additional information regarding Fr. Odiong to report it directly to the Waco police department.
“Fr. Odiong served at St. Mary, Church of the Assumption, in West and St. Peter Catholic Student Center in Waco from 2006 to 2012. Since Fr. Odiong’s conclusion of service in the Diocese of Austin in 2012, he has not had authorization to minister as a priest within the twenty-five county area comprising the Diocese of Austin. Fr. Odiong’s bishop recalled him back to the Diocese of Uyo in writing in March of 2024.
“In 2019, the Diocese of Austin sent written communication to Fr. Odiong confirming that he did not have authorization to engage in priestly ministry in the Diocese of Austin, even on a temporary basis. This determination was based on complaints that the diocese had received regarding Fr. Odiong’s behavior with adult women, as well as his failure to follow the protocol for visiting clergy to present a testimonial of suitability for ministry from his Bishop.
“That written communication was also sent to the Archdiocese of New Orleans and to his own Bishop in Uyo. Upon receiving ongoing reports of Fr. Odiong’s presence and attempts to exercise priestly ministry in the Diocese of Austin, follow-up communication of the same nature was given at St. Peter and St. Mary, both in December of 2023 and February of 2024.
“We reiterate our sadness regarding this painful situation and continue to ask for God’s healing grace upon all involved.”
