Washington, D.C. – The United States has imposed sanctions on three individuals, including two based in South Africa, accusing them of funding and enabling the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) to expand its operations across Africa.

The US Treasury Department said on Tuesday that Abubakar Swalleh and Zayd Gangat, both South African residents, are key figures in Isis’s financial network. Swalleh is alleged to have facilitated fund transfers between South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), while Gangat is accused of training and supporting the group.

The third individual sanctioned, Hamidah Nabagala, is based in the DRC and is linked to the 2021 Kampala bombing.

These individuals are accused of generating funds through criminal activities such as robbery, extortion, and kidnapping for ransom. The US government believes they are crucial to Isis’s operations in the region, providing a link between different affiliates.

The sanctions freeze any assets the individuals may hold in the US and prohibit Americans from doing business with them. The Treasury Department warned that non-US citizens who violate these sanctions could also face penalties.

The US government has expressed growing concern about the spread of Isis in Africa, which has been linked to increased violence and instability in several countries.
