Dangote Cement Plc, the most capitalized stock on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), recorded a 9.99% decline on the NGX today, resulting in a N1.12 trillion loss in its market value.

The massive decline was responsible for the NGX posting a 1.94% decline, as the All-Share Index closed at 98,201.49 points, its lowest since May 27.

The drubbing of Dangote Cement’s stock in the NGX is the latest in a series of events that have pitted the industrialists against the Nigerian government.

Maybe some people on nairaland were born just recently..... undecided but anyone who follows nigerian government and Nigerian politics since 1999 will know that dangote was among the people who benefited from corrupt government that prefers to give only him license to do some certain things several years ago just for their selfish gains... .I guess the table is now turning around..

The market as a whole did not and cannot lose N1 Trillion in a day.

If you have no knowledge, please keep your comment to yourself.

As much as I don't have a lot of sympathy for dangote given that he richly profited from government favouritism in the past to the detriment of other investors and businesses, leading to his near monopoly of most markets and commodities, I still will wish the government isn't treating his businesses this way, not for his sake, but for the country.
For one, it sends a wrong signal to other potential investors.
But more importantly, the monopoly he has enjoyed over the years means his businesses and products has a lot of influence on the everyday market and commodities.
So hurting his business will hurt the economy and cause inflation as we don't have a lot of viable local alternatives
