Minister of State for Youth Development Advocates for Non-Violent Engagement with Government

The Honourable Minister of State for Youth Development, Engr Ayodele Olawande, hosted a two-day workshop and dialogue focused on transparency and accountability in public institutions.

The event, attended by young people from across the country, aimed to foster skills and promote sustainable, non-violent approaches to engaging with the government.

In his opening remarks, Minister Olawande emphasized the importance of equipping young people with the necessary skills to effectively advocate for transparency and accountability.

He praised the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the MacArthur Foundation, the National Bureau of Statistics, and other partners for their dedication to promoting good governance.

“I would like to extend my appreciation to our partners for their unwavering support and collaboration in promoting transparency and accountability in our public institutions,” said Olawande.

“Data is a critical tool for growth, development, and planning, and your dedication and hard work are instrumental in driving forward our shared goals.”

The Minister highlighted the importance of a responsive and accountable government, noting that the ministry, in collaboration with its partners, organized the event to listen to young people’s perspectives on curbing corruption.

He stressed that sustainable strategies, such as advocacy and constructive dialogue, are essential for achieving meaningful progress.

“Advocacy and constructive dialogue are effective and sustainable tools for addressing corruption. There is a need for young advocates to understand the best way to engage the government and shun fake news and propaganda,” Olawande stated.

In line with this commitment, the Ministry launched two programs: "Young and Secure" and "The Youth Help Desk."

These initiatives aim to empower young people to exercise their rights and hold the government accountable without fear.

Minister Olawande expressed gratitude to the young attendees for their enthusiasm and capacity for positive change.

“Today is about listening to you, your ideas, yearnings, and interests. Your voices and perspectives are invaluable, and I am eager to hear your recommendations. Advocacy is the key to achieving transparency and accountability, and with your active participation, we can make a significant impact.”
