The Nigerian Government has revealed that Niger, Benin Republic and Togo are indebted to the country to the tune of $14.2 million in electricity bills debts in the First Quarter of 2024.

This was according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC Q1 report 2024.

This is as NERC asked the Electricity Market Operator (MO) under the Transmission Company of Nigeria to activate the relevant market rules to ensure the recovery of $14.2 million owed to Nigeria by international customers in Q1, 2024.

The NERC is worried that the beneficiary countries being supplied electricity by Nigeria have failed to remit monies to the country. This was contained in the NERCs Q1, 2024 report.

The regulator in the report noted, “None of the four international bilateral customers being supplied by Generation Companies (Gencos) in the NESI made payment against the cumulative invoice of $14.19 million issued by the MO for services rendered in 2024/Q1.

“As indicated in previous reports, the commission expects the MO to invoke the provision of the market rules to curtail the payment indiscipline being exhibited by local and international bilateral customers.”

Meanwhile, the report said two international customers paid a cumulative arrears of $5.96 million in debt owed Nigeria.

DAILY POST recalls the three countries owed Nigeria N132.2 billion in electricity bills supplied to them from 2018 to the first quarter of 2023.

While some local small scale businesses are collapsing everyday due to epileptic power supply and increase in fuel,

Our Government has been busy supplying light to 3 african countries since 2018 for free.

To add insult to injury, they are still looking for ways to increase electricity tariff for you their beloved masses. cheesy

our leaders are simply enemies of Nigeria, the reason most of them still reside in Nigeria is because of their political positions, how many of their children are living in Nigeria? How many of their investment are in Nigeria? Nigeria is to them what forest is to hunters, no matter how much a hunter makes from a forest he will never care to take care of the forest, may God deliver us from wicked leaders

Good you corrected your own perspective.

Many Nigerians, even those earning over N1m and N2m monthly, are still in the habit of bypassing their electricity meter to connect directly to their air conditioners and water heaters.

The eventual manipulated and underestimated bill, they will still owe.

I blame our poor legal system for the effrontery that Nigerians have. Many who are roaming free, actually deserve to be in prison for one crime or the other.

Meanwhile NEPA officials are go around with ladder, cutting people's electricity supply due to some months rent in Nigeria.

Also some areas are not even seeing the electricity supply at all here in Nigeria.

Giant of Africa, let take care of ourselves first even as we are trying to be our brother's keeper.

A lot of NIgerians also owe NEPA Billions of naira for free power (ie discos and gencos)...including government people, the rich and the poor. IN some areas more than90% of people do not pay for the power they use. Nationwide, it is about 40%

Also, government so subsidises electricity that less than 20% pay for power at a cost reflective rate.

Many of those small businesses, poor people , not so poor, rich people and government agencies also bypass meters, and do illegal connections.

All that adds up to bad power, because the sector cannot get enough cash supply. Right now, the government owes at least a trillion in unpaid subsides, many of the discos have not been able to pay tax because of the low profit, or non existent profit, and at least 3 discos have collapsed and had to be taken over by the banks. GENCOS cannot pay for gas effectively.

So, pot, meet kettle.

Anyone wanting to quote me and abuse me should first consider.....we have a working GSM sector in a poor country like Nigeria...because we let them charge the price they need to make the money they need. W hy do we sabotage our power sector in the name of poverty, and African brotherhood.? Would MTN or Airtel agree to stay if over 50% of customers used their service for free, or government forced them to charge 1 kobo for a 10 minute call to help the poor.

Not everything that helps the poor actually does so.
