Chapter 8

Ruby's POV

It hasn't been easy working for Richard. It's just three days here and I'm tired already. Omo, if not that I'm seriously after the bag and the contract I signed, I would have resigned today, that's after giving him a piece of my mind.

This guy is so terrible!. I don't know if it's because I'm not his kind of secretary, or he's pissed at the fact that he can't fire me, or he just hates me. Since morning I've not rested. From one errand to the other. This guy purposely had his cup of coffee spilled on the floor and when I made to go call the cleaner, he said I should do it myself. You know the most annoying part?. I had to make that coffee seven times before he accepted it was up to his taste.

He didn't stop there, he asked me to go take his dog, Sherlin, to the vet. On my way back, I should get him some food. Something he can easily place an order for. I returned only for this guy to tell me that he doesn't want the jollof rice anymore. I should give it to Sherlin but before that, I should go and get him Asun rice.

By the time I was done with all this, my body was aching. I got to my table to see some heaped files. Uncle instructed that have them typed, arranged in an alphabetical order and sent to his mail.

While I was at that, my divinely handsome crush walked up to me. Dave is the exact opposite of his brother; friendly with everyone and so humble. It's amazing how he goes around daily to check up on the staff. Most times, he joins them in the cafeteria to eat. I have not really had the time to eat there because I'm always so busy. Richard makes sure of that.

“Hey, Ruby, how's it going?” he asked casually as he leaned on my desk.

I shrugged. “Fine?.... I guess”.

The cheerful look on his face dropped and was replaced with a sad one.

“Richie's still throwing tantrums?” He asked.

I contemplated whether to answer that or not.

“I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I expected him to be mad but not to this extent. I take all the blames”.

I couldn't help but smile. For the moment, I forgot about all my stress and focused on this being in front of me. His presence alone has the healing energy that seems to make me feel at ease. The way other ladies seems so pleased to have him around, I know I'm not the only person that has a crush on him.

“No, it's not your fault. I agreed to this remember?. I really need this job and won't let his behavior make me lose it….”. That's partly a lie and a truth. A lie because a few hours ago I felt like quitting, and a truth because I consciously decided to take this job.

“... After all, I've handled more terrible situations than this” I said, typing on the desktop before me.

“Care to tell me more”

I chuckled. “Nah, it's nothing” I waved off.

“Alright, why don't we hang out after work today?. Let's say, I take you to a really nice place for relaxation. You must be stressed” he said. “Please don't get me wrong. It's not like a date or anything. I just feel guilty and just thought of doing something nice” he added quickly.

Was the ending part necessary?. Must he indirectly break my heart?.

“Alright, I'd love that” I said with a smile and I mean it.

“Okay…… See ya later” he said as he made his way into his brother's office.

I chuckled. The “I don't do office romance “ resounding in my head. Well, at least, I get to be acquainted with him. Not bad.

❤️❤️❤️❤️

Immediately I got home, I slumped on my bed. I really had a good time with Dave. The guy is just so carefree, nice and fun to be with. From the conversations we had, I got to know that it's not the first time he'd hung out with an employee. He does it once in a while with any gender and it's mostly because he feels the person needs some fun time. I mean, who does that?. No wonder everyone seems to like him a lot. Unlike the other person.

After resting a little, I got up and changed into my towel, ready to bathe. But then my phone began to ring.

“The one and only Ib baby” I teased as I laid back on the bed.

“This one you're hailing me like this…. What's popping?” She asked, ready for gist.

I gave her the gist of how my day went.

“Ah, that Richard sef, I'm sure he wants to frustrate you since he can't fire you” she said angrily.

“Madam, you have left my tale about I and Dave and have focused on Richard oh, ah” I said, fuming to be angry.

“Who's that screaming in the background there?” Ibiso asked out of nowhere.

I kept mute, paying attention to confirm what she's saying. Truely, someone was screaming. This compound sef, what is it this time around? I hastily ended the call with Ibiso and went outside. I got to see my landlady standing at the front of the bathroom, in all her fierceness.

Seems she locked someone inside.

“You go remain there today. I see you baff around 3 today, now you dun dey baff again. Wetin dey do una for this compound sef?” she asked angrily.

“Landlady abeg na. You know say I go workshop for afternoon. I dun dirty na why I dey baff again”. That's John.

What exactly is this woman's problem? John is a mechanic and it's only expected he takes his bath whenever he returns home. Infact, everyone is meant to bathe whenever they return.

“That one no concern me. Una wan full my soak away….” Her eyes landed on me. “Oh, Ribbon. You too wan baff” she laughed wickedly. “As una no wan make I drink water drop cup. Una too, no go drink water drop cup” she said, shaking her head aggressively.

I couldn't get myself to say anything. John remained inside there, pleading seriously.

“This one go sound as a lesson to all of una. Especially you Ribbon. This ajebutter pikin. One day e go enter for you” she said, eying me maliciously.

“Landlady abeg now, why you dey do like this? Allow John come out” Mama Ekene pleaded, with a spatula in her hand. Seems she was baking garri when she heard the noise. But is that why she had to come outside with the spatula?

“Noooo, John dun too try me” Landlady disagreed, shaking her head aggressively.

“Agnes, landlady dun lock your group member oh, shey you no go come now. Shey as em win money for nairabet buy rice and chicken, you follow chop?”.

Hey!!!!. What is even wrong with this Mama Ekene eh?. Does she have say everything?

“So John, you win money for nairabet, na em you no pay me my two months rent. Way my own rice and chicken?" She asked, stretching forth her hands like she's about to receive something.

"You go sleep there today” Landlady said when she didn't get any reply. It's as if her anger has been multiplied by twenty.

“This talk talk mama Ekene. Na God go punish you!” John fired from the bathroom.

I just stood, watching them quarrel. I can't even tell what my landlady's problem is anymore. If it's the double bathing, rent or rice and chicken she didn't eat, cause she's here, shouting angrily. I pity John as it doesn't look like he's coming out from there anytime soon.

I just went back inside the house. I don't think I'll have my bath tonight.

Indeed, the best compound in Agadaga street.

Chapter 9

Since I didn't go to work today, all thanks to Richard who asked me to stay back, I've decided to wash my clothes. It's a Saturday morning with the sun shining so bright, a perfect weather to dry some clothes. The compound is lively as everyone is present, doing one thing or the other.

It's Mama Ekene’s turn to wash the toilet and she's been quarreling seriously with her husband about it since 6:00am. She wants him to do the washing, something we all know Papa Ekene will never agree to do. I'm not in support of him washing the toilet actually, but he could at least help out in other chores. I guess that's what angers Mama Ekene everytime.

Ever since he lost his job as a school driver four years ago, he has refused to be useful to himself and family. All he does is to chase after little girls and eat the free food his wife provides from the petty jobs she does.

Mama Ekene in her lousy and troublesome nature doesn't let any of his misbehavior slide as she makes sure to embarrass him wherever she pleases. She even goes as far as beating him up. Guess what, no one cares to save him whenever the blue and black beating is on. Everyone would just take a seat and watch the display of an action movie, including Ekene. When I inquired the reason, they told me that whosoever tries to intervene would end up receiving some slaps from Mama Ekene.

I would not want to be slapped so I joined the rest of my neighbors as we watched the quarrel, hoping that it doesn't result in a fight, or some blue and black beating.

Surprisingly it didn't, rather Papa Ekene decided to repair the broken table and chairs. At first, we thought he was bluffing when he made mention of it to his wife, but all that changed when he went in and returned with the broken items and began to work on them.

We all began to hail him. This is the first time I'm seeing this man lift a finger to do anything, I guess it's the same for the others cause they kept looking at him with a surprised look. I think it's safe to say that none of us knew that he's good with hammer and nails. You can never know someone completely.

Just when we thought the whole scene was over, John strolled into the compound like a tired laborer. Greetings everyone, he slumped tiredly on the wooden bench by the side of Agnes's window.

“Abeg who cook?”

We weren't expecting that, so we all stared at him with funny faces.

“This early morning, John” I said.

“You no see say everybody just dey wake up? Na because sun dey shine?” Papa Ekene asked.

“Abeg abeg knack that thing you dey knack jor. Your face de like person way just dey wake?” He asked Papa Ekene. Eying him playfully, making the rest of us laugh.

“John where you sleep now?, I come fine you for night you no dey”. Agnes said from inside her room.

“Omo, neighbors…. Una no go believe wetin I go through last night….”

It seems like it's going to be story time. Agnes rushed out of her room, with a wrapper tied above her chest as she joined him on the bench.

Since I was already done with pegging my clothes, I joined them too.

We all waited in anticipation for the gist John is about to download us with.

“So now, I dey house for night. One babe way I repair her car call me oh. I surprise because night dun reach. When I answer, she say cold dey catch her, make I come her house….” Papa Ekene suddenly stopped hitting the table and focused on John. I and Agnes bursted into laughter cause it's obvious he did that because of the ending part of Johns tale.

“..... I first think say she no know who she dey talk to oh, which day me and that one start to dey parole kwanu?. Na em the babe call my name oh, say she knows who she dey talk to. Ah… I gree now…..”

“Sharp guyyyyy!!” Mama Ekene and Agnes hailed.

With him feeling himself, John continued. “I carry my last 800 rush go her place oh. Ah, this babe house fine. Omo as I just reach gbam!!. See this girl, ah, God create oh. This girl gatherrrrrr!! Everywhere full. Front, back, side everywhere-”

“Oga, go straight to the point nau” Papa Ekene cut in impatiently.

“Okay, okay. We enter room. I think say na me wan knack this girl. But mehn, na she knack me oh, ah! Infact e no even dey like say she knack me, na rape she rape me…”

John's face alone can have you thrown on the floor in laughter. The way he folded himself and hugged his knees like someone that was violated is so funny.

“No style way this girl no give me. Omo, this baby na spiderman, no, no na horse”.

“Abeg rest jor, as if the thing no sweet you” Agnes teased, giving him a light slap on his head.

“E sweet oh, com over sweet. Like this my thing dey pepper me” he said as he looked down at his trouser. His face alone could tell he's saying the truth. “I wan go press am hot water” this had us laughing again. This John is a clown.

“Like this eh, I no get strength. All through the night I no sleep. This girl wan kee me. Make una find food for me abeg”.

Well, I don't think any of us have food in the house. Agnes just got some food from the mama put, a while ago. Mama Ekene had earlier complained of an empty kitchen and I? For over a week now work hasn't let me have the chance to put my pots on the gas.

“I wan cook oh….”

“Wetin you they cook?!” The way we all asked in union is so surprising.

My short while staying here has taught me some pidgin language. Why won't I learn? When that's all they speak here. I like it though. At least, I could blend in with them rather than speaking proper English all the time and feeling like the odd one amongst them. I'm still learning sha.

“Na soup” Amaka, the person that occupied the last room said. She's barely around, so we hardly even relate with her but all the same…. She's one of us.

*Which soup biko?” Mama Ekene asked, standing up abruptly from the chair she's been sitting on.

Amaka gave out a soft laugh. “I no know wetin to call the soup”.

We stared at her in awe, how possible is that?

“Ehh, wetin you go use cook am?”

“Egusi, obolo, okra, fish and meat”.

“Ahh….. who combines egusi, obolo and okra together in one pot?” I was astonished.

She chuckled. “You go see the combo today”.

“Wait, wait Amaka. Which leaf you go come use?” Agnes asked.

“Uziza and vegetable“.

“Nothing person no go see for this compound” John said, clapping his hands like those village gossips when they've been told something by the stream side.

“Make una chill. Una go like am” she assured. “See, make everybody bring four, four hundred make I go add Isam and meat”

Dipping my hands into my pocket, I brought out the five hundred naira note in there. I really need to have a taste of this meal. I don't know why I feel very excited about this. Everyone contributed except John who said he had no money left but offered to provide garri for everyone.

You need to see the way we all sat, refusing to go ahead with our chores, as we all waited for the food to get ready. I and Agnes even went as far as helping out in cutting and washing the periwinkle, as well as slicing the vegetable and Uziza leaf just to quicken the process.

Finally, finally…. Lo and behold. The awaited time arrived. Here we are, all staring at our plate of soup. I must confess, it looks mouthwatering. I'm already salivating at the sight of it and my tummy growling at the nice aroma that fills my nostrils.

With my phone ringing, I dipped my right hand into the bowl of water beside me, whilst using my left to answer the call, not minding to look closely at the caller.

“Ruby, to the office now!!!” A very annoying and grumpy voice echoed then the call ended. I look at the screen. Richard!!.

Hissing in annoyance, I ignored the call and began to fire down the food before me. Ah, this is so delicious.

Chapter 10

It wasn't difficult locating the restaurant Richard had texted me to meet him at. That's after trying to blow up my phone with lots of calls which I intentionally ignored. I had to take my time to eat that food, after all, he asked me to stay back today. Why the sudden need for my presence?. I'm glad he asked me to meet him here, instead of at the office even though I don't know what the whole meeting is all about.

This place screams glamor and luxury. The exterior of the restaurant is modern and stylish, with large glass windows that offer a glimpse of the vibrant interior. A well-lit sign proudly displays the restaurant's name, “Zara’s Haven” with potted plants adding a touch of nature to the entrance, creating a welcoming and upscale appearance.

Impressed by the impeccable masterpiece before me, I walked elegantly towards the security guards by the glass door. With a big smile on his face, he opened the door for me to go in.

Swinging my head in both directions to see if I could find Richard, I used the opportunity to admire the interior. The restaurant exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere, blending modern elegance with rich cultural elements, where vibrant patterns and traditional motifs met contemporary design, offering a sophisticated dining experience with authentic dishes served in a setting that was both luxurious and deeply rooted in tradition. These are the kind of places Daddy loves to dine in. The man is a sucker for luxury and elegance.

“Excuse me ma'am” a high pitched voice interrupted my mental observations.

“Oh…. Hi. Em, I'm here to meet with my boss, Richard Mag-”

“Oh Richard…. Yeah” she cut in sharply, nodding her head and smiling.

I nodded too, returning her contagious smile.

“Um, he did mention your coming. I'm really sorry to say this but your dressing doesn't fit in with the dress code of this establishment, I can't let you in any further. I wonder why the security let you” she said, glancing briefly outside.

I stared at myself. I'm dressed in a sleek, emerald green mini dress with a sweetheart neckline and thin straps. How can I forget that most luxury restaurants have a dress code and not all accept such appearances like mine.

What were I thinking for goodness sake.

“I understand perfectly, but I need to be-”

“Yeah I understand too. But there's nothing I can do ma'am”

I swallowed the lump of saliva that had formed in my throat. I actually brought out something professional to put on, but when he sent a second text, with an address of a restaurant, telling me to look classy and elegant, I just thought maybe it's not something too official and changed into this. Now, see where it has landed me.

By now, people are already making head turns towards us. This is so embarrassing.

“Okay, can you at least tell him I'm here, my phone just went off” I pleaded.

“You have to exit the premise first”

This is not good.

“Ruby, Vivian….” I was relieved to hear someone call my name but annoyed to know it's Richard. “Why didn't you send her to me?I've been waiting for her,” he asked the lady who I believe is Vivian, as he tucked his hands in his pockets.

Smiling sweetly she replied ”dress code Sir”.

Frowning a little as his eyes rested on me, I knew immediately it's going to be a thong of war after this.

“Can you make an exception for me today?” He asked, lazily looking away from me, to her, hands still in his pockets.

She shrugged, “maybe”

“Or should I go talk to your-”

“No, no it's okay” she cut in quickly.

“Alright then”.

🤎🤎🤎🤎

Just as I had thought, it was a friendly dinner with some friends who are also his business partners, so he needed me to take down some important details. I barely touched the food before me as I kept thinking of the incident earlier. Just sipping on my glass of wine from time to time. Forcing myself to ignore how savory the wine tastes.

The way he glanced at me from time to time with an angry expression, which he quickly replaced with a smile when he looks away is so uncomfortable. I can't wait to leave this place.

Finally, the whole chatting and laughter came to an end and we're all leaving. Not bothering to wait for him, I walked as fast as my legs could carry me out of the restaurant. The image of everyone staring at me earlier flashing in my mind over and over again. If there's anything I can't get over quickly, it's public attention especially when it's not in a pleasant manner like this one.

I stood by his car, waiting for him to finish up and join me.

“Ruby”

I heard my name. I searched around but couldn't find anyone. “In here”

I couldn't help but chuckle, it was his driver. I never knew he'd been here all along.

“You look stunning”

I wanted to roll my eyes. I obviously don't feel stunning. What's the need of looking it, when you don't feel it?.

Muttering a thank you inaudibly, I joined him at the front seat.

“How long have you been here?”

He smiled, “for a very long time. I saw you come in”.

“Really?” That's a pretty long time.

“Me and Sherlin,” he said.

“Sherlin?” I asked, looking around the car for her. There she was at the back seat, looking so cute.

I've never been a pet lover but I've come to love this adorable Sherlin. She rushed to me, making me laugh heartily.

The sudden strike of thunder had her suddenly terrified. Seems it's going to rain soon. My clothes are outside, I don't know if there's anyone at home to help me remove them.

It wasn't long when he returned. The car became quiet and the atmosphere all tensed.

I waited for his explosive outburst but none came, until when I thought it was never gonna happen.

“What was the rubbish stunt you pulled in there about?” He started by asking.

“It wasn't intentional Sir” I said politely. I just hope it doesn't result in any yelling.

“How do you show up at such a place dressed like that?!. What sort of an embarrassment was that?” He asked, I could feel his anger rising bit, by bit.

“Answer me!!” He barked when he didn't get a reply.

“I didn't know they have a dress code in-”

“If you had picked up your damn phone then you would have known. I kept calling you for a number of reasons but you didn't pick up, only for you to show up, dress like one going on a date……”

The rant went on and on and it's becoming annoying.

“Besides, how would you not know a place like that has a dress code?. Is it that you're so poor and wretched that you've not been to places like that?. For Christ sake I called you, many times! Just as if I knew you were going to come and embarrass -”

“I'm sorry Sir “ I cut in quickly, hoping it'd put an end to everything.

“Keep that sorry for your future!!” I felt a sharp pain in my heart. For my future?. I could feel my eyes itching.

“You arrive there thirty minutes late, looking all sexy. Did I ask you to come seduce my friends, cause obviously you can't succeed in seducing me. Not with those flat ass and tiny-”

“Please stop the car” Not minding I interrupted him, I said to the driver. This guy is so disrespectful and annoying and I'm sick and tired of his bullshit.

I saw the driver look at the front mirror like he was trying to take permission. “I said stop the damn car!” I yelled, losing my cool.

When he didn't budge, I kept Sherlin aside, unfastened my seatbelt and made for the door, not minding the moving vehicle. On seeing my seriousness, the car hauled.

I turned to him “I wonder who raised you?. She really did a terrible job with you”, with this I opened the door and walked out, not minding to shut it.

I never realized it was raining heavily, not until now. I didn't let that stop me. I kept walking like it didn't matter even though I'm already soaked and feeling cold.

~~~~
Not feeling like stopping any cab, I continued walking in the rain. As I sobbed seriously. You know that moment where you've been holding up for so long and something just happens and it feels like the flood gates of heaven have been opened. You begin to think deeply about your life and end up crying. That's the situation I'm in now.
With my bag clutched to my body and my dress plastered on my skin I kept walking until I got home. My Landlady was sitting by the varanda.
“Ah, ah Ribbon. Why you dey waka for rain now?” she asked, amused. I don't know what's so funny to her.
“Leave me alone, please” I replied tiredly.
Surprisingly, she stood up and began walking towards me, the amused look on her face suddenly disappearing.
“You dey cry?, na because of rain you dey cry?. Ah, all this ajebutter them” she said like she's finding it hard to believe that I'm actually crying. “No cry now. Ribbon nedey cry” she consoled, patting me on my back. “I get hot water for fire, make I do tea for you?”
For some reason, I bursted into uncontrollable tears. This is just crazy.
Chapter 11
Standing in front of my mirror, I adjusted my charcoal gray blazer, feeling the confidence it brought. The white silk blouse underneath was soft against my skin, and the straight-leg pants paired perfectly with my black pumps. With a final glance at my reflection, I grabbed my black tote and headed out, ready to tackle the day.
“Ribbon, you dun they comot?”.
I remember my landlady's display of affection yesterday. I wasn't surprised. She's like a dramatic chameleon. Today, she's nice to you, tomorrow she's the most annoying person you'd ever met. The thing I've come to understand about her is that, when she shows you kindness, receive it but don't get caught up with the feeling. She would certainly change the next minute and you may regret accepting her kindness earlier. Just flow with whatever color she shows you.
“Yes ma, good morning”. I tried not to smile so much. I have to be certain about the color she's going to display today so she doesn't take me unawares.
“Wetin been make you dey cry yesterday?” she asked, hands akimbo.
I chuckled, why does she look like she wants to fight for me?.
“It's nothing ma, just someone from work” I replied with a little smile plastered on my face.
“Ah, na em you dey cry?” She eyes me up and down. “So you neva learn something for this compound. Me gon gon, I nedey gree for anybody, Mama Ekene, even Agnes sef. Na em you dey cry because of person” she draws me closer to herself. “If that rubbish happen again eh, you no go fetch water for this tank again!”.
I opened my mouth to say something but couldn't form a word. She looked so serious and it'd be only stupid of me not to believe her.
“Make you stop this ajebo, ajebo something oh. All of us for here strong gidigbam!! No come spoil our name oh”. She drags her left ear. “Person do you, you sef do am back. I nedey fear anybody for this life. God of the widows dey my back….. em go fight for me!!”
Ah, the Lioness of Agadaga street has spoken.
“Alright ma, I've heard you” I replied, with a smile. I seem to be smiling a lot today.
“Oya now, dey go. When you dey come back, buy that tea way I do for you back. Na you go dey cry for person, so your punishment be say you go replace the chocolate and cowbell”.
Is this woman for real?...... I ended up laughing loudly as I took my leave. I'd sure get them for her, so she doesn't add me in her God-of-vengeance prayer tonight.
One thing is for sure…. That “if person do you, you sef do am back” will surely come to play today.
As I walked into the office, The memory of yesterday’s fiasco with Richard was tucked away, buried beneath the determination to keep my composure and steeze. I greeted everyone with a bright smile, my confidence radiating through the polished walls of the office. Each step I took in my heels echoed with a rhythm of purpose, and I made sure to engage with my colleagues like nothing was amiss. The weight of Richard’s words didn’t seem to touch me as I effortlessly balanced meetings, emails, and small talk. Today, I was determined to own my space, to prove that yesterday’s storm had no hold over me.
“Have you scheduled a meeting with the Emeralds?” Richard asked, while I arranged his book shelf.
“Yes, I have”.
“Have you taken the report from the marketing department?”
“Yes, I have”.
“Is there something else remaining for me today?” He asked again.
I stopped arranging and turned my attention to him “you have a meeting with Mr Omotayo today by 4pm, at his office”.
“Alright….. here” he threw some papers at me. “You asked who raised me yesterday, adding that she did a terrible job at it. It's obvious you know how to raise someone better than she does, so there….” He points at the papers. “I want you to write an article on how to raise a male child in modern day Nigeria……”
“...….. Note…. It should not be more than twelve pages, and not less than nine pages” he added casually and focused on his phone.
This is the reason why I need to see who raised him. Of the truth, most men do not really grow up, mentally tough.
“Alright Sir” I replied and got back to arranging the shelf.
I could feel his gaze on me but didn't bother to turn back. Only if he knows what I have in store for him.
~~~~

“I see someone is all high-spirited today”

I stopped humming the song in my mind and looked up. A big smile appeared on my face.

“Good day Sir“

“Yeah Ruby…. You look amazing” he complimented, looking briefly at my outfit.

Is he here to taunt me with all his cuteness and charms?. I can feel every part of me getting excited.

“Thank you Sir”, I replied, trying as much as possible to maintain my steez and composure. “You didn't attend the meeting?” I asked. I believe he's supposed to be there. After all, he's a partner to my boss

“Of course I did. It ended few minutes ago”

I thought for a while.

“Really?.... So quick?”

“Yeah…. Richie was dozing peacefully at the meeting to the amazement of everyone so we decided to reschedule. Reason I'm back here and he, taken home”.

My mouth formed an “O” as I faced my laptop, refusing to maintain eye contact.

Resting slightly on my desk, he focused on me, eyes staring intensely at me.

“So why did you do it?” He asked, eyes not leaving me.

Looking at everything except at him, “do what Sir?” I asked.

“Don't do that….”

Even an interrogation from him sounds seductive. God…..

“I don't understand what you mean Sir” I said, trying to sound normal, whereas I'm losing my mind. Does he even know what our body proximity is doing to me?.

“At exactly 11am today, I saw you putting something in his glass of wine. I didn't give it so much thought, not until he started sleeping at the meeting…..”

My eyes widened in shock as my heart began to race.

“What did you put in it and why?”

“I…. I… I didn't mean…. It….”

“Just stop stuttering and speak”.

Biting my lips softly, I took a deep breath. “It was….. I just took a little sleeping medicine and…….”I paused. “It was just to catch fun watching him sleep off in the office. I didn't even think about the meeting at that time” I replied truthfully.

He said nothing, rather, he stood straight up.

“I understand the urge to get back at him for being a jerk but that's very childish and unprofessional of you……”

As if his brother hasn't been childish. I rolled my eyes internally.

“All the same, serve him right “. Is that a smile on his face? Wow.

He turned around to leave, but stopped.

“Just don't do it again. He is your boss, and my brother. I won't take it lightly with you if something like this or of any kind happens again”.

“Yes, Sir!” I saluted as he walked away. With a big smile on my face I continued staring at his retreating figure. I love his personality so much.

~~~~
“Body dey pepper me….. make everybody come out, body dey pepper me!”
I pretended not to hear Agnes's voice as I relaxed comfortably on my bed. Today, I admit, is the best day in that office. I wish I was at that meeting to see Richard dozing.
I wonder if it's with this smelling, rotten character of his, that he uses to approach his many girlfriends.
To be frank, he has an eye for good things. You need to see the kind of girls he hangs out with. Their shapes are killing. Oh my God. You know that Omotola kind of coke bottle shape?, that's exactly what they have. And they are always so beautiful that one would think that they're from another planet.
Don't get me wrong, I am very, very beautiful, dropdead gorgeous but that doesn't mean I won't recognize and admit the beauty of another woman. I'm not a jealous freak. But then, how do they even cope with someone like him?.
“Who collect fish way I put for zinc?” Agnes shouted.
Fish? Who took her fish now? Just when I'm thinking of sleeping, this is happening. Then when it gets dark, Landlady would take over, with her always-loud, never-aligning prayer points.
You won't believe that, the very day she locked John in the bathroom, she added him as a prayer point at night. Mrs Landlady was seriously telling God to help John win another money from nairabet so he could pay for his rent. And if he refuses to pay up, God should make him deaf and dumb. I laughed so much that night that my belle began to hurt. I imagined what it would look like if John actually turned deaf and dumb.
Speaking of which, you needed to see how happy my landlady was, when I gave her the beverages I got for her. I didn't know she was a good dancer. This woman was just praising me. I couldn't help but smile. But then, I didn't let it get into my head, she's always unpredictable.
“I dun dey shout am oh, nobody dey answer me. Who take fish way I put for zinc?. Na five dry fish I put, now na only two I dey see. Eehen!!! Una dun start oh”
“Ekene, my mind dey tell me say na you” that's Amaka’s voice.
“Eh, eh hold am der!. How Ekene hand wan take reach for der?” I heard Mama Ekene reply.
“I see am dey chop something for backyard but my mind not go say na my fish. Your pikin na thief oo” certainly, Agnes
Connecting my headset to my phone, I increased the volume of the music so I don't hear anything from outside. Today, I do not want drama. Certainly not today.
Chapter 12
“Oh babe, did you see Dave today?” I overheard someone ask. Even if I wanted to mind my business and keep moving, I just knew it won't be possible after all, it's Dave they're talking about.
I stood behind the slightly opened door, as I took a peek into the office. There sat two friends who bear the same name, and are colleagues. Yeah, we call them Helene one and Helene two. The fair one is Helene one and the dark one is Helene two.
“Omo, I couldn't even utter a ‘good morning‘ when he walked past me this morning. Likeeeeee, ah” Helene one replied. Placing her hand on her cheek like someone who's daydreaming.
“The fact that he is unaccessible is crazy….” It seemed like Helene one wanted to cut in “..... chill now let me explain. Yeah, he is jovial, friendly and all that. He is still unaccessible. He gives you his attention but it still feels like you don't have his attention. His interactions with you are friendly but only on the surface. It's never deep, I don't know if you get me?” Helene two asked, hoping her friend understood the aspect she's talking from.
“Babe, I dunno oh but I feel that's how both of them are now. Both of them are unaccessible. You can't get Richard's attention except you are busty and have a big ass. Even at that, if you throw yourself at him, he'd decline. He loves to go for them himself” Helene one argued.
“Correct. But it hurts more with Dave. No one knows his preferences in women and that makes it even more difficult to get him. Don't you get it. It's difficult with Dave” Helene two stressed, with a look of frustration on her face.
I agree with Helene two. Dave can be by your side, talking to you and it still feels like his whole being isn't with you, leaving you wanting more of him.
Drawing closer to her friend, Helene one pointed at her ass. “Yeah, you're right. Since I know Richard's preference, I've been working on my ass. Can't you see it's getting bigger?” She asked with a smirk.
I see, this is getting interesting.
“Then how do you get his attention, without making it obvious?”
“That's not a problem. Once I get that killer shape his women has, I'd position myself where he can easily see me. Shoot!!!. And there we go. Since I can't have Dave, I can at least have Richard. I must have one of them”. Pride and satisfaction evident in her voice as she played with her artificial curly hair.
“Well, I'll remain hopeful. One day Dave may pick interest in me” Helene two expressed with a shrug.
“Babe, I was hopeful like you, oh. Until one day, I caught sight of Richard banging Funmi, his former secretary in his office. Ah babe…..” she pulls her legs together and hugs them. “That guy is sooooo good. Thank God no one caught me peeping into his office. That scene has never left my memory. I get wet and aroused whenever I think about it…… So, I'm working hard to get a taste of that”.
“Give me the gist in details now “ Helene two pleaded, sitting up excitedly.
Just when I anticipated the gist, my phone began to ring. I quickly rushed off before they could see me. Why didn't this phone wait for me to leave before ringing?
I managed to rush into the lady's toilet.
“Hello Sir”.
“Where the hell are you?. To my office, now!!”.
I rolled my eyes at his grumpy voice, he doesn't know how easy it is to hate him.
“Where's the article?” He asked, immediately I walked into his office.
“Oh, that. I'm not done with it Sir”.
“You were quick to tell me how badly raised I am, but slow to write an article on how to raise someone. Aren't you a hypocrite?.” He scoffs.
“You think you have a better judgment of people?.....”his brows raised at me as he stared maliciously. “How far have you gone?”
“On the sixth page”
Nodding his head “I want to see it on my table immediately I walk in tomorrow, else…. Twenty percent from your salary would be deducted” he said.
~~~~~

“Twenty percent?!! For just a yeye write up?” Ibiso asked over the phone.

“What can I say?”

“So, because he can't fire you, he wants to be cutting your salary small small for unnecessary rubbish eh?”

“Obviously, look babe I have to go. Let me focus and do this stuff the day is half gone already “. I said as I typed away. I had to finish the paperwork I had already handed before I could go to that funny task.

For hours I continued working, flipping files upon files and typing on my computer. Rushing to the photocopier, I did some photocopying and stapling. After that, I began to work on the warehouse report I had taken earlier. Then I proceeded to the ‘almighty task’.

Omo, my back aches. God! I typed until I ran out of ideas. Then, I sought the help of Ibiso, who gave me her own opinion too. Deciding to rest my head a little, I drifted into an uncomfortable sleep.

I was woken up by my phone ringing in a very dark room. Taking my phone, I looked at the screen. Landlady.

“Ribbon!!. You nedey come back house?!” her voice was so loud that I had to shift the phone away from my ear

“Come back house?” I asked, astonished.

“See time, I wan lock this passage oh. Where you waka go, abi you dun go man house?”.

What is she talking about?.

Realization suddenly hit me. “ Oh my God! Ma please don't lock, I slept off at the office. I'd be back soon” I pleaded. Getting up immediately.

“That one concern you. See time, 10:55…..”

“Landlady abeg now…. I sleep off”

“I dun dey lock. Go find where you go sleep” and that's it, she hung up on me.

Quickly, I turned on my phone's torch, packed my things and walked to the door but it refused to open. I tried again but it wasn't opening. How possible is this?.

I immediately dialed the head security's number. “Hello, sorry for calling at this time but I need-”

“Ashawo!!. Una nedey rest, the day I go catch you eh. Go marry! Leave person husband. Ah!!” And that's it. The angry bird hung up.

This is not good. Who do I call now?. I tried screaming for help but that won't help because of the loud music blasting from the next place…. I think there's a club there.

Dave?!. But it's too late to call him now. I can't even call Richard, who knows if he's not the one responsible for this?.

I decided to call Dave even though I was skeptical about it. It's better than calling Richard. I called twice but he didn't pick up. I had to send him a text.

I waited for a long while and became afraid that he wasn't going to come. I mean, it's 11:20 already. Maybe he's asleep. I can't stay here all alone, I'm so scared.

“What's that?” I muttered to myself and paid attention. I could hear some noise….. something like a bunch of keys.

Slowly the door opened to reveal Richard. Like Richard?, I didn't call him. Wait, this just confirms my suspicion of him being the one who locked me in here, If not, why is he here?.

“Will you quit staring at me like a frog and move?” He was so irritated.

“I didn't ask you to come save me” I muttered

“What did you say?”

“Nothing Sir”.

I walked out with him following behind, so many thoughts in my mind. What if he strangles me from behind? Or hit me with a big stick?.

I continued walking despite my fears until I got outside to see the security guards all standing, looking at us or me rather.

“Madam sorry, I think say person no dey the office as light no dey and we dun off the gen. I kuku no look inside” one of them explained.

So it's not this jerk behind me?.

“It's fine” I managed to smile.

“Ruby” I looked ahead to see Dave walking towards us.

“Are you feeling cold?” he asked, giving me a hoodie without hearing my response. I didn't bother to reply, I simply took it from him. “C’mon let's go,” he said, taking my hands.

I saw him glance briefly at his brother before he pulled me towards his car which was parked outside the gate.

Did something happen between them?. I kept wondering even as we settled in his car. I turned back to see Richard still staring in our direction. The energy seemed weird.

“Seat belt”

I nodded and fastened my seatbelt.

“Are you okay Sir?. Did you argue with your brother?” I asked, he looked very pissed. I have never seen him this way before.

“It's nothing”. He replied but we both know that's not true. His hold on the steering is getting tighter.

“But you don't -”

“Ruby!”

I was startled by his tone. I immediately kept my mouth shut.

Chapter 13

“What the hell Ruby?!”

I didn’t mean to fall asleep at the office, but as soon as I sat down at my desk, the warmth of the room started to lull me. My eyelids grew heavy, and before I knew it, I was leaning back in my chair, the soft hum of the air conditioner blending with the gentle tap of keyboards around me. My head tilted slightly to the side, and my mind drifted into that comforting space between wakefulness and sleep. Just five minutes, I told myself, but I knew better.

Now I'm here staring into the burning eyes of Richard. If looks could kill, I'm sure I'd be dead by now.

I broke off the intense stare and rubbed my burning eyes. I still feel very sleepy. I didn't sleep a wink all through the night even though I was lodged at a very cozy hotel. I find it extremely difficult to sleep when I go somewhere I'm not familiar with.

“Have those typed and sent to my mail!” He instructed sternly, throwing some papers at my desk

“Any idea if Dave is in his office?” He asked and I shook my head, why does he feel like I'd know that?. He opened his mouth to say something again but shut them up and left.

Inhaling deeply, I stared at the papers, then at his retreating figure.

I haven't set my eyes on Dave since today. After he yelled at me last night, nothing much was said between us except when he informed me he'd be lodging me in the hotel. I don't know if I have the right to be, but I'm upset at him you know. He hurt my feelings by yelling at me. Besides, I was only concerned about him. He has never spoken to me that way and it hurts pretty much.

He didn't even spare me a glance all through the ride. At some point I began to wish I never called him. I'm sure if I didn't, he'd probably not have fought with his brother, which I'm sure he did, because the tension I felt back there was real. They didn't even exchange pleasantries which is very unlikely to happen, and the fact that they both were there because of me just makes me believe they did have a fight.

What if they did fight but it wasn't about me and the whole night palava?. I mean, even when they do argue because of how Richard treats me, Dave never gets this upset. Yeah, he gets angry but not to this extent. Rather, it's Richard whose anger would probably want to burn down the place. But last night, the reverse was the case.

Oh God! My head hurts from thinking about these two brothers.

“Thinkerbell” someone snapped his fingers at me, interrupting my thoughts.

Speak of the devil.

“Good day Sir” I greeted.

“Yeah Ruby” he replied.

I said nothing and began flipping the pages of the document before me, pretending to be truely focused, whereas I'm seriously fighting with the urge to look into those charming eyes of his.

“Why is your face like that?. Are you planning to beat me up?” He asked, amusement written all over his face.

Frowning my face further “no Sir, I'm just busy at the moment”

He chuckled on hearing me say that. What's so funny?. Rolling my eyes internally, I continued flipping the pages.

“No, you're not busy at the moment. You're just fuming to be busy at the moment and even when you are busy, you always make time to look up at me and smile ....”

Jesus!! This is see-finish at the highest level. Is it really that obvious?. Ah Ruby see what you have done to yourself.

Stopping my hands from flipping the next page, I looked up at him and made a small smile, one I had to force myself to do cause right now I feel so embarrassed.

“Is there anything I could do for you Sir?” I asked, with an overly nice voice. I know I might be overreacting but my ego is hurt.

The fact that he's standing here acting like nothing happened is so annoying.

He paused for a while. “Are you upset about something?” Oh, see who lost some memories.

“Why should I?. Everything is fine” I shrugged as I looked everywhere except at him.

“Okay, I'll take your word for it, enjoy your day”. Just like that he walked away. On a normal day, he'd walk into his brother's office but he didn't do that today….. This only confirms my suspicion.

On the other hand, can't he see I'm upset at him?. I know Dave is a very emotional intelligent person, I'm sure he knows. So he doesn't care?. He really doesn't care about how he yelled at me and hurt me?!. How I wish I could uncrush him right now, if there's anything like that. Or unlike….. no, what I feel for him is more than just a like….. yeah, unlove him right now.

But isn't this stupidity?. Like, why the hell am I even upset?. It's not like he's my friend, boyfriend or whatsoever. This person is basically my superior. Oh, what has come over me?. Inhaling deeply, I walked up to the water dispenser and got myself a glass of chilled water. Gulping down all its content into my throat, I felt relaxed a little bit.

That man saved my sorry ass the previous day irrespective of the late hour I called and how uncomfortable it might have been for him. What if he was with his girlfriend when I called that night?. Nah, I don't think so. I don't think he has a girlfriend. But, what if he does have.

I got more water and gulped in.

What if he had an accident on his way to come get me?...... Forget that. He's way out of my league and he didn't think twice to help me out, he even had me lodged, had food and drinks ordered for me and made sure I was comfortable before he left.

What an ungrateful person I must be.

❤️❤️❤️❤️

I went home crestfallen because I didn't get to see Dave and properly thank him. Well, tomorrow is another day.

I walked into my compound and saw that my neighbors were all seated outside playing ludo. Nice.

“Una good evening oh” my pidgin language is beginning to get better.

“Ah Ruby, e be like say you no sleep for house yesterday oh”…… if that's just a comment or an indirect question, I don't know and don't even care to know. Right now, all I want is to take a warm bath and crash into bed. All my body aches and my eyelids feel so heavy.

“I see when she comes back this early morning, come comot again”. Papa Ekene said.

“Ruby where you sleep now?” Mama Ekene asked, increasing her tone for no just reason.

“Make una leave me abeg, I no get strength” I managed to say as I struggled to unlock the stubborn padlock before me.

“You no go tell us now, na your wellbeing and safety dey us important oh”.

I stopped fighting with my padlock and looked at John, it felt nice hearing him say that.

Smiling tiredly, I opened my mouth to reply but had to shut it up when the compound’s lioness came in from nowhere.

“Ribbon say she sleep off for work oh” She said, clapping her hands in a ridiculous manner and laughing mockingly.

The others looked at me amused.

“True true you sleep for work?” Papa Ekene asked hopefully. Why does he look excited?

“Na me even wake her from sleep sef. Her voice just dey like person way dun dey sleep tey tey. Wetin just fit her na make she dey house dey chop, make person dey send her money. Small strength like this, Ribbon no get”

“I don't know the satisfaction you derive from ridiculing people. Shebi I begged you not to lock the passage? Didn't I?, now you've rushed to come tell them how I slept off at work. Please excuse me abeg” I said as I finally opened the door and went into my room, leaving her staring at my retreating figure.

I know I shouldn't have spoken to her like that but this woman can be so annoying. It's just like she enjoys people's discomfort and feeds off their pain. Ten percent respect for herself and zero respect for others. Mtcheeew!

Writer's POV

Somewhere in Delta State

Uduak returned from the SIM registration center where she had gone to go get another SIM card for her new phone, as Emeka had smashed her previous phone against the wall and had the SIM cards flushed into the toilet. because he caught her talking on the phone with someone who he perceived to be a man.

Rather than inquiring who it was she was speaking with, he took action against the phone and concluded his display with two hot slaps on her cheeks. She stayed awake that night crying her eyes out.

She walked into the living room to see her husband and a lady seated in the dining room, while Grace served them. She looked at the unfamiliar face again and began to wonder who she was. Could it be a relation of Emeka?. So far, he has never brought in any of his women, so that woman there couldn't possibly be one.

“Madam welcome” Grace greeted, bowing slightly despite being told many times to stop doing that.

Uduak only smiled at her, greeted those in the dining room and walked into her room. She didn't even care if they replied to her or not. She was famished. After changing into something light and comfortable, she walked out and went straight into the kitchen.

“Grace, any idea who that woman is?” Of course, she didn't have the courage to ask her husband who the visitor was.

“Madam I no know oh, Oga carry her and her big bag come oh”

“Really?”.....

“She just dey call am baby, baby. Me I no know oh” Grace said as she continued arranging the washed dishes on the rack.

“I see”.

Dishing from the pot of Afang soup she had prepared before leaving the house, she settled on the wooden chair in the kitchen and began unwrapping the wrap of garri before her. Her love for Afang soup is way beyond human imagination.

In no time, she was done eating. It always amazes Grace how quickly she finishes eating garri and Afang soup but when it comes to other kinds of food, she could probably spend the whole day eating it.

“Ah, thank you Grace, please help me with the hand towel okay” she said, washing her hands in the sink.

“Come Grace, wash that soup away. I don't like how it smells. It's so uncomfortable here”.

Uduak turned to see where those instructions were coming from.

“Excuse me?” She was confused.

“Madam shift jor. Grace I don't want to perceive this rubbish smell when I walk into this kitchen again. Go take those dishes away, we're done eating”

Just like that, the lady with a big backside instructed and turned around, swaying her hips as she walked away.

Uduak couldn't believe what just happened, it felt like she was watching a movie.

Without wasting any time, she followed suit, only to see both her husband and the lady as lovey-dovey in the living room.

“Emeka, can I talk to you?” She asked, trying her best to sound calm and collected.

“Madam don't even waste your time, just go to your room and sleep”

“So it has gotten to the point where you now bring in your women?”

“Madam you are disturbing my peace please”.

Not knowing what to do next or say, she quietly walked away, even though her heart felt so heavy.

Chapter 14

Pacing around her room in total distress, Uduak’s mind kept giving out more than a hundred suggestions all at once. She walked up to the large mirror and stared at her own image. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her physical appearance. She was a beauty to behold, something everyone knows, Emeka included. What then is the problem?

Scoffing at the ridiculous thoughts on her mind, she walked away from the mirror. She knew she should have left the marriage the very first time he showed an act of disrespect, or maybe the second time… but No, she didn't.

Feeling so pathetic and ashamed of herself, she slumped on the bed as tears rolled down her eyes. It's funny how her friends envy her all because they feel she has a rich husband who takes care of all her bills. Only if they knew.

A faint knock on her door, had her wiping off her tears in a haste and sitting upright. In a slow motion the door opened to reveal Grace, taking a peep into the room.

“Oh Grace… it's you” she thought it was Emeka.

“Yes ma” Grace replied as she took some steps in. “I came to-”

“Go to the bar and get me four bottles of Desperado”.

“Ma, you say?” Grace thought she didn't hear her right so she asked.

“I said….. Get. Me. Four. Bottles. Of. Desperado!!”

“Yes, yes ma” without any more hesitation, she hurried out of the room to get them.

In no time, Grace returned with the drinks. Standing by the side of the bed, she watched as Uduak gulped in the contents like it was some freshly made orange juice. It was astonishing and saddening at the same time.

“I failed. I failed woefully….” A loud hysterical laughter erupted from her lips, as she took in more content from the bottle.

“Look at me Grace. Look at me…. I failed” she laughed again. “I failed to fight against my father, I failed to protect myself and Iniobong from him. I failed to find the right partner and to make matters worse…. I failed to stand up for myself and leave this shit hole of a marriage…” she paused and unexpectedly smiled brightly at Grace, who stood not knowing what to do.

“But nah, I won't fail to protect this little angel growing in me. I won't”.

Grabbing the third bottle like she’s having a beef with it, she cracked the cover open with her teeths and made to drink from it, when Grace rushed to take it away.

“Madam e dun do now” she pleaded.

Scoffing sadly Uduak asked, “you know I'm weak right?”.....

“Answer me!!” She yelled when she didn't get a reply.

“You no weak ma”.

“Yes I am….. oh Ini. You need to see Ini, she's the opposite of me” a small smile appeared on her face. “She's bold and courageous. Funny how she fights father whenever he tries to bully us. I'm supposed to do the protecting, but stupid me. I'm always weak, but Ini?, Ini is never afraid to speak up for me and herself”....

Even though Grace didn't know who Ini was, she listened attentively.

“You know Ini right?”.... Grace nodded, faking a smile. “Yeah, you should know her. Who wouldn't know her?.....” Uduak smiled broadly this time. “Her beauty, charms and charisma are never hidden. And her eyes?...... Very endearing and captivating. She took after mother's eyes…..” just like that, that was how Grace ended up spending more thirty minutes listening to her about Iniobong who she has never heard of. Well, her rescue came when Uduak finally feel asleep.

Ruby's POV

“Shebi na beg I go beg una to pay Nepa bill eh?. John!!!! Way your money?”. Yeah, you guessed right. That's the Lioness of the best compound in Agadaga street.

The weather is so hot, and it's pretty obvious the compound is about to get hotter. I just hope all this hotness dries my clothes.

Minding my business, I continued to wash the few clothes remaining for me.

“Landlady make I go workshop tomorrow, I go bring the money for you”.

“Ogun kee you der!!. Everytime make you go workshop. No be the same thing you tell me yesterday and all those days way dun pass?! Linus!”

“Eh nothing come out all those days now. I get faith say something go come out tomorrow” John replied, as he made himself comfortable on pavement in front of his room.

“Faith…. You know wetin be faith?. Mtcheeew!! Na just mumu dey worry you. I no wan use my leg kun find you tomorrow oo, because you no go like wetin I go do you. You know me”.

“Agnes, wetin be the problem?”. It's obviously turn by turn.

“Landlady money no dey. Shebi I tell you say my mama no well?. I send money go give -”

“Abeg abeg no sing that yeye song for me. Wetin concern me concern that one?. Na small three thousand five hundred na em you dey mention money you send give your mama. I dun tell you, leave that your kabukabu boyfriend, find man way get money, you say no”

“Landlady which kin stupid talk be that one na?. Na small three five, na em make you dey insult me?”.

“Why I no go insult you?. Tell me”

“This woman respect yourself oh, if not one day I go change am for you” Agnes warned sternly.

It's about to go down!!

“Agnes, so you dun grow. You dun dey open eye for me…. Okay, you dun dey learn from Ruby ba?....”

How did I get into this?

“Since Ruby enter here, you dun dey get mouth for where I dey” she said further.

“Landlady please, I don't have strength for this drama. How did I get involved now eh?” I asked. This woman is always looking for trouble and I don't like it.

“How you no go enter?. You go just dey use calm-calm way dey do your own badmouth. You think say I no know you?”

Sometimes I used to think maybe, there's a remote that controls this woman's sense of reasoning.

“Thank God I have paid my electricity bill. Avoid me please” I said, as I stood up to dispose of the dirty water in my bucket.

“Eh…. Use mic tell everybody say you dun pay. Very soon I go increase your rent” she said after me.

Ignoring her I continued doing my thing.

She stopped picking on me and faced Mama Ekene. She took the bill collection in turns, after she was done, she marched out.

“But true true oh, Ruby na you give Agnes mind to dey reply landlady oh”. I heard John say, a few minutes after the landlady marched out.

“How?” I asked. I could see the others are eager to hear from him too.

“Check am out now. All of us here dey sabi fight people oh, we dey even fight ourself but we nedey ever carry our craze reach where landlady dey. But you, you go just dey use English English dey tell her talk….”

“Na true!!” Mama Ekene interjected. “Na so she go just dey calm oh, you fit swear say she no even talk anything. If she give you attitude eh”.

These people have finished me. Me, attitude ke?. Funny.

“Make una leave Ruby jor. The girl no get problem at all, she no just like when person-”

“Agnes relax der!. Before, you dey open eye for landlady?” John attacked, shining his eyes like he's about to swallow her. “You dey open eye for everybody but no be landlady jor, wetin you dey buga?”.

“You Ruby, you get bad character but you no know” Mama Ekene said. “But I like am Sha oh. You nedey find trouble na why I like you, but you nedey gree make person put hand for your eye too” she added with admiration.

“Make una leave Ruby, the girl character gel. Which one be say she dey give attitude eh. Na landlady just dey fine unnecessary trouble. Ruby no get problem at all” Amaka defended. All this while she has been silent.

I chuckled softly….. these people have not told me yet, the color of their problem. Dave and Richard are my problem.

Speaking of which, do you know Richard actually deducted twenty percent from my salary?. Saying that my article was trash and wasn't realistic. I don't even want to think about that.

Chapter 15

“So you are Ruby?” A sonorous voice asked.

The moment she had walked in, I felt a shift in the air, like someone had turned up the elegance dial to a hundred. She was stunning—caramel skin that looked like it had been kissed by the sun, and jet-black hair that cascaded down her back in perfect waves. Her cheekbones were high and sharp, giving her an air of sophistication, while her honey-colored eyes seemed to take in everything around her, missing nothing. I couldn’t help but stare, mesmerized by the way she moved—tall and graceful, like she owned the very ground she walked on.

I tried to focus, pretend I wasn’t completely in awe, but it was impossible. Her presence demanded attention, yet there was something soft about her too. Despite her striking beauty and the aura of authority she carried, there was warmth in her eyes. She didn’t seem like the kind of person who would make you feel small, even though she could have, with just one look.

I was curious, trying to piece together who she might be. Someone this poised had to be important, but I couldn’t place her. All I knew was that she commanded the room without saying a word, and I found myself inexplicably drawn to her, as if there was something more to her than what meets the eye.

But why did she seem so familiar?

“Ruby right?” She asked again, pulling me out of my thoughts.

“Yes I am…. You're welcome ma” I replied, loving the way her eyes stared warmly at me.

“You look exactly as I have imagined”

What exactly does she mean by that?.

“It's your lunchtime. Why don't we have lunch together” She suggested while her perfectly manicured hands tapped graciously on my desk.

I was flabbergasted at her confidence and effortless command of authority.

With a smile on my face, “May I know who you are please?” I requested.

“You just think about it while I say hello to my other baby” and that was it. She was majestically walking into my boss's office.

Wait, did she just say her other baby?... I clenched my fists at the thought of that. Does that mean…… She's Richard and Dave's mother?

---

I sat there, my mind racing. I still couldn’t believe it. This woman, the one who had swept into my office like a breath of fresh air mixed with an iron fist, was “their” mother. Richard and Dave. How could I not have known? I mean, I've heard so much about her from the other staff members. But something about the way she spoke to me, with that casual authority, had given her away. And yet, I felt a pang of uncertainty. What did she mean by, “You look exactly as I imagined”? Had Richard or Dave mentioned me to her?

Clicking my tongue, No, that couldn’t be it. They barely acknowledged me beyond work.

As I sat there, mulling over the conversation, the door to Richard’s office closed with a soft click. She was in there now, speaking to him.

And then there was Helene one and Helene two, as nosy as ever, breathing down my neck like I had the inside scoop on a top-secret meeting. “So beautiful and elegant,” she had said, and I couldn’t disagree. But there was more to Mrs. Edwards than beauty; there was something about her that felt… intimidating.

I focused back on my work, though my mind refused to settle. What would a lunch with Mrs. Edwards be like? Why did she invite me, of all people? Maybe she was just being polite, but something told me it was more than that.

Wait, what if it has something to do with the other night?. I mean, after that day the two brothers, Dave rather have been avoidant towards Richard. Everything about them screams professional in all sense, unlike before where their relationship was intense and strong. But then no one knows what the whole beef that night was all about. Maybe it was about me that's why she's requesting to have lunch with me.

Nah, I don't think so. Just as I had said, the brothers barely acknowledge me beyond work.

As I typed, my thoughts spiraled. Was this woman going to make my life harder? Would Richard treat me differently now that his mother had acknowledged me?

I heard the door creak open again. My heart skipped a beat.

Writer's POV

Somewhere in Delta State

“Madam, why don’t you want to leave this marriage?” Grace asked as she sliced the onions, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Emeka and his 'Obim', as he affectionately called her, had stepped out, giving Uduak and Grace the space to talk as usual.

“My dear, I really don’t know what to say,” Uduak replied, turning off the gas while the pot of stew bubbled furiously. “I just don’t have the courage to do it.”

“But your father has money now.”

Uduak glanced at the young girl, wishing she understood how complicated things were.

“That’s what makes it even harder,” she said, settling onto a stool beside Grace.

“If my father had money, I wouldn’t put up with this nonsense,” Grace replied.

“I understand, dear.” Uduak paused, as if recalling a painful memory. “My father, Chief Sunday, is one of those men who values male children over females, despite being educated and wealthy. I was born six years after their marriage, and he was thrilled. But when my mother had my sister, Iniobong, he was disappointed. After that, my mother couldn't have any more children.” She took a sip of water, her expression distant.

Grace listened intently, eager to understand why her madam remained in such a difficult situation.

“After Ini, my father’s attitude changed completely. He became cold and indifferent, paying little attention to my sister and me. My mother, frustrated, suggested he take a second wife, and he did. My stepmother quickly gave him six sons...”

“Ah, na wa oh,” Grace exclaimed, her mouth agape, prompting a soft chuckle from Uduak.

“Yes. My father poured all his love and attention into my stepbrothers. But the worst part?” Uduak asked, hoping Grace would catch on.

“Our mother couldn’t show us love either. She blamed us for being girls. I mean, who does that? Was it our fault? She paid us little attention, preferring shopping and vacations. When asked about her behavior, she would claim it was her way of coping with not giving my father what he wanted. She made us feel like we had ruined her happy marriage.” Uduak’s gaze drifted to the window, as if searching for answers.

“Some people shouldn’t be parents, and it’s unfortunate that mine are among them. My sister and I were raised by a maid while our half-brothers basked in the love of our parents. I still don’t understand what makes a male child so special that they would treat us this way…” Her voice trailed off, and her eyes glistened with unshed tears.

“The only things my parents provided were financial necessities; everything else was left to our maid. Whenever my brothers excelled at something, my father would use it to taunt my sister and me, constantly reminding us we weren’t good enough and could never measure up to a boy. I grew up with zero confidence and a low self-esteem. It was tough, Grace. I felt like I couldn’t do anything right. I was heartbroken, sad, and often moody. I had friends at school, but isolating myself felt safer; at least I wouldn’t be compared to anyone like I was at home.” She paused, her expression turning bittersweet.

“Ini, on the other hand, was different. Her confidence was rock solid. While I sulked, she was determined to outshine our brothers. She consistently topped her exams and excelled in competitions, always striving to prove herself. But when she realized that no matter what she accomplished, we would always be seen as inferior, she eventually gave up.”

“Ah… na wa oh,” Grace replied, still struggling to comprehend how such things could happen.

“When Emeka came along, it felt like a breath of fresh air. For the first time, my parents praised me for doing something right. They adored him—he came from a good family, was educated, and most importantly, he was a man.” Uduak let out a bitter laugh at the irony.

“They really do favor men,” Grace said, laughing along.

“Yes, they do. It felt so good to see my parents smile at me and say they were proud of me, all because of a man. For the first time, I felt proud of myself. I allowed nothing to come between Emeka and me, even when the red flags were glaring. I ignored them, even when Ini warned me seriously. If this was what it took to gain my parents' approval, I was willing to do it. That’s how I ended up with this shameless dog.”

“Ah, na wa oh… but you can still leave. Don’t you want to avoid your parents’ shame? You’re not a little girl anymore. Who do parents help, really? My dad got my mom pregnant, and after I was born, she handed me over to her sister. I don’t owe them anything. It’s my aunt who matters to me now,” Grace said, raising her hands in the air as if starting a praise session, which made Uduak smile faintly.

“Are you afraid they won’t love you anymore? They didn’t really love you to begin with! Don’t worry about anyone else. If this man is going to hurt you, you need to stand up for yourself, or just grab your things and run far away,” Grace urged.

“Grace!!”

Uduak turned to the door, then back at Grace.

“You should go see what he wants,” she said, reflecting on the young girl’s words.
