The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has inaugurated members of the Anti Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State.

The inauguration comes on the heels of the reconstitution of the membership of the Unit by the management of the university following the expiration of the tenure of the former members.

ACTU stands for Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit, which is a department within the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in Nigeria.

The Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) is responsible for receiving and investigating complaints of corruption and misconduct; conducting corruption risk assessments and providing advisory services; developing and implementing corruption prevention strategies; collaborating with other agencies to combat corruption and promoting transparency and accountability in government and public institutions

The ICPC is an independent agency established by the Nigerian government by an Act of Parliament No. 13 of 2000 to combat corruption and promote transparency and accountability in the country. The ACTU plays a crucial role in achieving this mandate.

While speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sunday Elom, said that the university prides itself as an institution that keeps to the laws that govern the affairs of the country, by adopting the national agenda which is to run an unbiased free system that gives equal opportunities, rights and chances to all Nigerians irrespective of their tribe, religion or class to be admitted as students or work as staff in the University.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor at the ceremony, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Abel Ezeoha noted that the University Management is strongly in support of the ICPC and its mandates, as corruption should not be allowed in the University system.

He therefore advised the newly inaugurated members of the Unit to be steadfast in their duties in order to ensure that the activities of the university remain transparent and officials accountable in the system, while also assuring the ICPC of the management's commitment to providing an enabling environment for members of the Unit to function effectively in the University.

In his goodwill message, the Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Dr. Musa Adamu said that ACTU is a microcosm of the Commission, set up to complement the good work of management in entrenching good governance and ethical practices, adding that as a Commission they are expected to carry out all the functions of the Commission except prosecutorial duties and charged them to function within the ambit of the law and the standing Order setting up the Unit.

The chairman, who was represented by the Commissioner in charge of Enugu and Ebonyi States , Mr. Kennedy Ebhotemen further said that the economic upheaval being experienced today in Nigeria is to a large extent a resultant effect of corruption, stressing that in order to checkmate the scourge of corruption, all hands must be on deck.

He equally pointed out that with the right policies, systems check and corruption prevention strategies, the hydra-headed monster called corruption would be checkmated, adding that Management and ACTU members should therefore exhibit the culture of integrity, uprightness, accountability and public spiritedness in discharging their duties so that other staff can emulate their conducts.

The newly inaugurated members of the Unit include; Dr. Osatuyi Williams (Chairman), Ms. Nnodi Chiaka, Mr. Dapo O. Jegede, Mr. Ikechukwu Onwe, Mr. Adamji T. Solomon, Barr. Happiness Uzor, Mrs. Eunice O. Nwojiji and Qs. Ukwuoma Chidi, member / Secretary.
