How can you stop at 1980? Even up to the 90s and 2000s these equipment were highly relevant.

You see that cutlass, back in my day we would bend the tip to form a curve so we can cut stubborn grass. Elephant grass was easy to cut but that stubborn grass is truly stubborn. If you hit it your cutlass will bounce.

That metal bucket once caused a ring to form on my scalp because we had to go a very long distance to fetch water.

I have hidden inside that black and red box to hide from a very wicked senior prefect.

Federal Government Colleges of the old days no be beans.

Which FGC did you attend.

Good ol-days when garri was so cheap and readily available, and yet a scarce commodity in boarding schools due to demand and high consumption. grin grin grin
Garri and cabin biscuit 🍪 were the number one life saver in those days. grin grin grin

I wonder how boarding school students today are coping under Tif.nubu's disastrous bulabu economic policies.

Beats me... I really feel for them. Omo e no easy those days oo then come imagine how e go be for those poor boarders now wey price of essentials like Garri, Milk, Sardine, Groundnut, Carbon Biscuit, Milo/Bournvita, Tasty time, Sugar and others don triple.

I went to boarding in 1996. These items were mandatory: Cutlass, hoe, bucket, six hangers, sport shoes, charcoal iron, mosquito nets, six spring mattress, white bed sheet, blue bedsheet, blanket, one wrapper etc...

Boarding house story is not complete if you don't talk about the unceasing beating.

When a senior calls out loudly, "One boy there!" And the whole Jss 1 and Jss 2 boy start running helter-skelter from where they are to the direction the voice came from, "na senior Emeka dey call, na senior Emeka" because you don't want to be the last boy, knowing fully well that the last boy might be the one to do the chore after collecting moro, Sapa and belt. No dulling

Including the red night, that one night that is usually the eve of the official school vacation day that any hostel student is allowed to commit any atrocity to any other student wey looseguard. That is the night you must not yield to sleep, because you will surely end up crying when you wake up.

Yeah we called it Murphy night ( hope I got the spelling correct ex commandos) in command. Omo that night is always dreadful... From smearing ones eyes with toothpaste to tying one to his bunk and then flogging him to wake him up with a start.

We go also use that metal bucket to cook. Oh boy! Any stray goat, stray chicken, dinner done set.

Other memories
- Chapel service on Wednesdays
- Drama rehearsals on Fridays
-Drama night on Saturdays
-Reading with moonlight
-Crushing on girls that were older and taller than you
-Mass punishment for those who miss labour on Wednesdays
-Labour every Saturday
-Variety night every Saturday
- That one person that knows Sisqo, DMX and Jarule songs word for word
-That one person that knows all illegal entrances & exits out of school and out of boys hostel
- That wall in the dormitory where the names of all set members have been written with a marker
- Writing your name 'lagbaja was ere' using candle flame on the ceiling
- Hiding in the ceiling when teachers come to raid the hostel
- Bad toilets and flinging of feaces into the school farm (My dormitory mates are guilty, not me)
-Bunching of as many as 4 or 5 bunks together

Summary - Hostel life, no be lie. You go suffer, but you go rugged join.
