Too many dimwits on Nairaland shouting balance of trade,SA will lose more, Nigeria will lose more blah blah blah. Do you clowns really think trading will stop between the 2 countries over a minor diplomatic spat where the police didnt even manage to gain entrance.
NO BUSINESS WILL CONTINUE BUT THERE HAS TO BE REPERCUSSIONS FOR SUCH ACTIONS
norrisman:

If the South Africans called the police and reported that they were being held against their wishes do you think the SA police are like your NPF that would take no action.
WERE THEY BEEN HELD AGAINST THEIR WISHES?
norrisman:

I was in Nigeria a couple of weeks ago and every single official at the airport either begs you for money or tries to make your life difficult so you can pay your way out. On the way the airport, a policeman stops my friend, who although his car papers were up to date, he didnt have them in the car due to the car being broken into recently and all his personal effects removed. The policeman, realising we were on the way to the airport said we must follow him to the mobile court. In any normal country, in the absence of technology for instant verification, you should be allowed to produce the said documents once it can be established that tue car isnt stolen.
DID HE STOP U FROM PRODUCING THE SAID DOCUMENTS? OR U WERE IN A HURRY NOT TO MISS UR FLIGHT AND U SOUGHT THE EASY WAY OUT?

norrisman:

Then the customs, parted with N2000 for daring to export indomie noodles and cassava flakes (garri lol).

YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE UPSTAIRS TO PAY AND COLLECT RECEIPT FOR THE FOOD EXPORT YOU WERE TRYING TO MAKE. THEY CHARGE N5,000 FOR THAT PLUS ALL THE RELEVANT AGENCIES WILL INSPECT THE FOOD FIRST. PEOPLE LIKE YOU ALWAYS WHINE ABOUT HOW U ARE EXTORTED BUT U ACTUALLY PREFER IT TO DOING THE RIGHT THING. SO WHO ARE YOU FOOLING?
Re: S'African Police Invade Nigerian Embassy Over Visa Refusal To South Africans by Nobody: 1:54pm On Dec 05, 2011
Diplomats are immune from prosecution even if they requested for bribes the South African authorities can only request for their recall. Forcefully entering Nigeria's High Commission can be taken as an act of aggression.

Nigeria should demand an unreserved apology from SA and demand the Police Chief in the location to resign immediately.

This is a test on Jonathan. His handling of this issue will determine whether he still holds the title of RETARDEEN or not

I dont know if they were held against their wishes but I find it hard that any police force, not even the most unprofessional of forces like the NPF will storm a foreign mission on receiving a call from a member of the public that they had been refused a visa.

In England, before the police could do on-the-spot verification, If u were stopped and didnt have your papers, you were given a producer to present the required documents at a police station within 7 days.

LWKMD! HMRC will make a killing if they start to charge every Nigerian £20 for 'exporting' small quantities of food for personal consumption. I hope u r joking and I dont really have to pay N5000 for exporting a box of noodles and a Derrica of Garri. Inspect Noodles eh? So the Nafdac number on it means nothing and why is it their business, they should let the country I am 'exporting' the food to do thw worrying.

u shd have got ur facts right first. There is nothing in the story that suggests that there is evidence of bribe being solicited, so it is just an accusation. secondly, even if it was actually solicited, the police has no right whatsoever to invade an embassy unless they were invited by the consulate. Here in nigeria, if your papers are not found on u while driving ur car, it will be impounded at the police station until u provide them, failure to do so will lead to the car being auctioned after a certain duration(i dont remember how long). BTW, have u tried importing some british foods before? i mean raw just like garri, not packaged? try it and come back here to let us know how it goes.

"why is it their business, they should let the country I am 'exporting' the food to do thw worrying"

yeah! same way they shd let drug barons fly and let the other countries do the worrying. Puleeez!!!

@ rimbaldi

I bring small quantities of food to Nigeria and I have never been requested ti declare such by the British authorities. What will the garri be tested for? Why dont they give garri Nafdac number? Why are they only interested in the 'welfare' of people taking garri to Europe and not the people consuming @ home?

Will I be free to proceed without customs harrasment if it is OluOlu packaged garri?

Before anything be aware I am not ignorant of the of the law attached to the status of foreign missions of countries. As much as I would like to rebuff the actions of the SA police force, unfortunately the Nigerian governments hasnt place herself in that position at all. Its funny quite seeing post from few Nigerians like rebuking the actions of another country's police on our foreign mission.

A country whose government has repeatedly failed to recognise the constitutional rights of her citizens, a government that does not have any plan whatsoever for the citizenry, a government that has repeatedly abuse the rights of her citizen to basic living.

Now a branch of this government has been abused by another country albeit forbidden under international law, I am all but happy to see it happen, only a lunatic would applaud the SA police if we have good governments in this country.

The country is seen as ---0 on the international front, the leaders cannot effectively communicate in English, bunch of old fools who know nothing about politics yet bribe their way in to swindle the ordinary citizens of this country.

And some of you are quik to take to NL to write about your knowledge about the Vienna diplomatic international law. I am more than happy to see them held hostage. Bunch of fools that has no knowledge about humanity and yet the citizens are happy to defend them when they have even failed to build an international reputation for themselves.

If our diplomats could be treated in such way how worse would an ordinary Nigerian be treated

a nation's laws are its laws. Airport regulation says u have to follow those procedures, u dont like it, dont go with the food, or betterstill take it up with the authorities. Regulations are regulations.

@dalebutt1
the fact that our leaders are an ill folk doesnt mean we shd allow others trample on our sovereignity. those of us here commenting are against the action on our country, not neccessarily the people ruling it. they are ours to deal with. The fact that we are been run by criminals doesnt mean we should allow everybody disrespect our country. this situation is analogous to ur neighbour breaking into ur house to get ur son just because ur son insulted him. Ur son is urs to deal with as u deem fit but meeeehn! ur house na ur house Chikena!

This issue got noting to do with corruption and human right.

IF every country behave the way of the SA Police, will their be any SA diplomat  in any country.

If you breach an agreement, then expect repercussions.

S'African is too small  to confront  Nigeria. Go check the records.

Entire South African Airways crew arrested for drug smuggling - TWICE in one month

The entire crew of a South African Airways flight has been arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling - for the second time in a month.
Fifteen members of the flight crew, including the pilot, were detained yesterday at Heathrow airport after customs officers found five kilos of cocaine in a bag.
They were being held by officers after the class A drug, with an estimated street value of £250,000, was discovered as the crew tried to clear customs following a 12-hour flight from Johannesburg.
South African Airways has stepped up security on its flights to stop smugglers

Bob Gaiger, spokesman for HM Revenue and Customs, said the drugs were found after the crew members were selected for a check as they entered the UK yesterday.
He said: 'Crew members are subject to the same customs checks as any other person when entering the UK. Those arrested are now being held in custody and will be interviewed by HMRC investigation officers.'
It is less than a month since the entire crew of another South African Airways flight from Johannesburg to Heathrow was arrested.
On January 21, ten women and five men from a Johannesburg-to-London flight were arrested after £310,000-worth of cannabis and cocaine were seized. They were bailed to return to Heathrow Police Station on March 23.
Last night Mr Gaiger said: 'It is quite amazing that it appears to have happened again. It is still very early days in our investigation.
'I expect that the crew will be questioned further tonight and tomorrow before we will know how things will develop.
'HMRC together with the UK Border Agency plays a vital role in the fight to prevent illegal drugs from entering the UK and in protecting our communities from the violence and corruption that always accompany this hideous trade.'
A spokesman for South African Airways said that an investigation had been launched last night following the arrests.
He said: 'I can confirm that the crew of the 234 Johannesburg-to-London flight that arrived yesterday morning have been detained.
'This comes following the discovery of illegal drugs in a bag, that I believe to be hand luggage that wasn't claimed.
'We are co-operating fully with the authorities and an investigation has been launched at our headquarters in Johannesburg.'
The spokesman in the UK said security measures were tightened following the embarrassment of the previous arrests.
'After last time we tightened security measures,' he said.
'We installed more security systems air-side and started using sniffer dogs.'

They've gone too far and there many ways of retaliating other than their crude methods.

Naija, and bribe,, Bribe and .Naija, How would you explain this scenario, a situation whereby a visa had already been issued on their passports, only to be revoked later. Haba, that is to say, they no agree to drop koko for ground hence instant revocation of their visas. corruption will finish this country if not checked now.

I live and work in Lagos and Johannesburg and visa's, expat quotta's and STR's between both countries are basically what I do for my company. I know for a fact that there is bad blood between both embassy's.

The SA embassy started it by imposing a ridiculous repatriation fee  for most nigerians and issuing business visa's for a maximum of 6 months. A lot of prominent Nigerian business men and women, people with UK and American visa's who travel frequently have been subjected to this. The Nigerian embassy retaliated by introducing the same visa restrictions. A lot of South African business folk have been finding it difficult to get Nigerian visa's because the embassy decided to do exactly what the SA embassy was doing.

In the past getting a Nigerian visa was easy, they would overlook most of the required documentation especially if you were being seconded to a SA company in Nigeria but not any more. There are no short cuts you have to submit all the required documentation and believe me, (short of asking you for your great grandfathers school certificate) they can ask for all sorts of additional documentation.

The Nigerian embassy is not innocent o! They are always looking for some extra cash. I cannot say for sure what happened but I can bet the Nigerian Embassy would have come up with some excuse (Flimsy as it may seem) but still justifiable to deny their visas. They probably did ask for a bribe and as non was forth coming, they went ahead and turned them down. THE NIGERIAN EMBASSY HAS EVERY RIGHT TO GRANT OR DENY THEM VISA'S. How dare the SA Police invade the Nigerian embassy? If this had happened to another country's embassy this would have been viewed as an ACT OF WAR! They should have gone to the press.

It is one thing to ask for the bribe ahead of issuing the visas, and deny the applicants the visa if they do not pay the bribe. It is another thing to demand the bribe post issuance, and, upon refusal of the applicants to pay the bribe, you not only revoke their visas, but also withhold their passports. The latter act demands a higher excuse of cancellation from embassy officials, one which, if given, will most likely be a stupid excuse.

Well heres the news - no be by force to come Naija na and to those who do not know - South African police are just as bad, if not worse than NPF. At least our NPF will never invade embassies.

My brothers, i have read your comments. I just want to point something out here. I am in Johannesburg & i visit nigerian embassy few days ago. Most of those working there are not nigerian but south africans. The govt made it mandatory that 80 percent of employees or workers in any company or organisation in S.A should be the taken by nationals. When i went to apply 4 visa to south africa in nigeria, i was attended to by nigerians. My point is, no body know for sure who requested for bribe b/c even in SA here, they take bribe alot just like in nigeria but nigerians own is too much. However, ignorance is never an excuse to commit. Their should be no reason to invade our embassy and i want nigerian govt to take it very serious just like the case btw arik airline and british airways. I know we have a bad name, but we can use these to show that we dont tolerate nonsense. Please pass this massage to the minister of foreign affairs cause such is his job not mine

Well, why would anyone believe Nigerian embassy requested for bribe, that is pure lies.if you are rejected of visa deal with it.i have seen scenario where many many people are denied visa.

Because its a Nigerian visa so South Africans should not be denied?

Have you heard about repatriation fee which is N110,000 that is required to be paid when obtaining visa to south Africa from Nigeria.so now Nigeria also applied the same protocol and all of a sudden its Bribe.

Please go and pay your R6000 so that your visa can be issued.

Thanks
