Two aspects of the ongoing hunger protest in Nigeria particularly intrigue me. Firstly, there is a small but growing support for Russia and a corresponding rise in anti-West sentiment, especially in Northern Nigeria.

Some protesters in Kano carried the Nigerian flag alongside the Russian flag, and there have been calls from some participants for demonstrators to bring Russian flags and photos of Vladimir Putin to seek Russia's assistance. More concerning is that these protesters do not seem to be affiliated with any pro-Russian group; they simply made amateur flags as observed by @Aliyussufiy who took first photo, suggesting that this sentiment is developing organically. This trend is likely to expand, especially as malign actors may observe and exploit it.

Secondly, there is a troubling increase in calls for a coup d'état by the Nigerian army. Interestingly, Nigerian soldiers deployed to the protests behaved commendably, avoiding harassment or intimidation of protesters, while the police shot, arrested and harassed many. This has increased the army's popularity in many areas, with videos circulating of soldiers helping protesters and receiving praise.

These situations mirror what happened in Mali, Niger and elsewhere, where military coups eventually toppled democratically elected governments. When those coups occurred, we witnessed sporadic protests in support of the military and Russia, and the new military regimes immediately turned to Russia.

Military governments are dictatorial, ineffective, and often brutal. I sincerely hope Nigeria does not follow this path. However, the rampant corruption, inefficiency and lack of empathy among our politicians are undermining democracy and fueling calls for a military takeover. The sooner politicians get their act together and prove their ability to govern effectively, the better it will be for everyone.

Moreover, the pro-Russia trend could signal a growing shift in public opinion, which may, in the medium term, lead to a shift in geopolitical alliances, potentially altering Nigeria's foreign relations and its stance in the global arena. Supporting the Nigerian government to deliver effective governance and engaging civil society and international partners can help reinforce democratic values and stabilise the nation's political landscape.

This is the right time for Nigeria to say no to hipocritical allies who have negatively dealt with this country for yrs, but our leaders have no balls to effect any positive changes for now do to compromise.

I have been dragging them to call the North by their name but they have been hiding their cowardly faces.

Face the North and call them what they are but they can't. With some of them in their muted tones claiming "Nigeria is not united, yen yen yen"

Is it today you know Nigeria isnt united?

Bunch of Swines.

What a shame! Protesting with Russian flags? It's like they’ve forgotten the history of manipulation by foreign powers.

Instead of demanding accountability from our leaders, they’re looking to Russia for help. Have we lost all sense of direction? This is how we lose our sovereignty, not gain it.

And the military? A military takeover will only lead to more suffering and loss of freedoms. The army might be getting cheers today, but when they take over, the reality will hit hard.

Politicians need to wake up and do their jobs; the people deserve better than this circus. Let's focus on building our democracy, not inviting more chaos!

Balderdash and more balderdash!. No coup will happen in Nigeria ever again. Your conspiracy theory remains dead in your head, the language written on the placards was french and no part of Nigeria speaks french. Secondly, the President instructed the Army to steer clear of the protest which the CDS alluded to, saying the military would only intervene if events escalates beyond police capacities. Such was the instance during ENDSARS when Army were unleashed when policemen were being killed and police stations burnt down, so far there have been no escalation beyond police control.

This is the closest you will get to realizing your dreams of Biafra.
Try harder, see if the country can go up in flames. If at the end of this you still don't have Biafra, then count it as another labor in vain.

Kano protesters have lost their way; waving Russian flags shows how misled they are. They need to focus on real issues instead of seeking attention through foreign symbols.
