Bag of brown beans for 200 naira??

Salary would have been 150 naira or less for most

Our elders really enjoyed their childhood back then. Bag of beans N200 but now 100k+.

Hahaha no.

Late onyeka onwenu narrated a documentary for BBC back then. In 1983, average salaries were between 100-250 naira monthly. That beans would hit you hard. Plus you have to sponsor dependents and pay for rice

Back then austerity was on ground

....a bag of brown beans 200 naira even more cheaper than a cup of brown beans that is now 500 naira a cup... nawaoooo... Tinubu renewed shege economy

Average salaries then were lower than 250 naira.

1983 was Buhari's era. Apc has been wrecking havoc in Nigeria since 1800

Buhari didn't take over until December 31 1983

Tai Solarin would have been a Tinubu supporter for obvious reasons if he was alive today, so he is one of the 'heroes' I have brutally learnt not to take too seriously.

That said, the Second Republic and its aftermath.... From Shagari down to the useless Buhari, down to IBB was when the devastation of this country became tattooed into the DNA of the country's polity.

Pa solarin won't have liked tinubu.

Pa solarin was a hard core leftist. Tinubu would have been evil capitalist to him

This man was made to head People's Bank inorder to alleviate the sufferings of the people. Guess what? grin. He failed woefully. It's not funny grin grin grin That is critics for you.

The idea was good, but the problem is, running such a bank in Nigeria is basically asking poor people to come and get free money.

Banks like first bank in Nigeria that has been around since 1894 surivie by being ruthless

There never were good days. People enjoy deceiving themselves.

More like someone earning 70000 naira now sees that people were buying beans for 200 a bag and thinks in terms of his salary, forgetting that if he worked back then his salary would have been around 100 or less monthly

bro,#200 was a lot of money back then oo, I remember in 1985 I was in secondary school,#1 was enough for my 2 square meal!

Your parents also had to pay for a host of other things too.

GOD BLESS YOU, MY BROTHER/SISTER!

Younger folks did not know Nigeria of yore.

There was NEVER a time things were cheap.

Never.

They should listen to old musical records of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s.

It was the same wailing and gnashing of teeth! LOL.

Just the other day, I was delighted to find Andy Shurman on YouTube. He was singing about hardship back when a bottle of coke was less than one naira.

Some people may think we were enjoying the. Nope

This was shortly after Major General Muhammadu Buhari took over government. We hear that it was one of the worst times for Nigerians under that dullard's first shot at leading the country. His second shot between 2015 and 2023 wasn't any different!

Buhari took over government on December 31 1983.

The letter was dated November. Buhari became head of state in December.

So, how did Buhari cause the hardship?

I have told people that the worst president ever is Shehu Shagari imposed on Nigerians by Obasanjo.

Under Shehu Shagari, our local markets disappeared as foreign goods flooded our markets. Since then, we have remained lovers of foreign goods. This began the destruction of the value of our naira.

Shagari actually won the election, as much as I hate to say it.

Also foreign goods have been flooding Nigeria long before shagari. During Gowon time, foreign cememt used to flood the ports

Also, high oil prices until 1982 fed the monster of imports

Are you guys okay? So because there was never a time things were cheap we should continue like that and besides I could recall the economy was not like this during yardua and Jonathan's regime until the same APC got to power and destroy everything

Yes, because yaradua and Jonathan had high oil prices and high revenue

The cracks were appearing in 2014 when oil prices fell.

Same show in 1973 to 82.

Dutch disease

( Apc still messed up though. )

Buhari only took over around October 1983, so how did he cause the 1983 hardship?

Buhari took over in Dec 31 1983

GeneralDae:

I think our best years ever prior to now (since 1960) in terms of all economic indices were in the Jonathan era. 2012 and 2013.

And also 1973-82.

High oil prices tend to create economic boom

What are you implying? Hardship didn't start today? Oniyẹ̀yẹ́. Did you check the year? 1983. That was when your failure ex-general Buhari was in power, a man known to be a badluck and a catastrophe to what is good. This same hardship continue when he took the baton via rigging from Jonathan in 2015 and that same hardship skyrocketed during Thiefnoobu-led fraudulent "grab it-steal it-run away with it" cabalistical government. Continue fooling the gullible with your propaganda. We know your game. APC time is up in Nigeria.

Buhari was not in power till dec 31 of that year

"May your road be rough" was the title of a powerful article written by Tai Solarin during his lifetime. The article was loaded with satire and very rich ...that article was even added to some English Language official textbook for secondary school Students. The man was an academic giant...but unfortunately an atheist who at old age was generally viewed as a betrayer because he served in the government of IBB as the coordinator of the defunct PEOPLES BANK!
