Migrated To Australia At 48: And God Came Through For Me. by Usefulsense: 10:07pm On Aug 03 |
After the post I made in March concerning my experience after 3 months in Australia, I received a lot of responses on the said thread with many insulting me for migrating at age 48. While a lot of people congratulated me for making the bold decision and taking steps to relocate my family to a better clime, others wondered why a financial controller, earning more than a million naira net per month, will leave Nigeria to become a warehouse worker in far away Australia. I did my best to explain that even as a warehouse worker, my savings in a month after all expenses is almost twice my monthly net in Nigeria. I mentioned that, apart from the few who had jobs before coming to Australia, you would most likely start life in the warehouse or as a disability support worker when you get here. A particular guy told me in the said thread that I will never get accounting role in Australia because of the competition. Glory to Almighty God who answered my prayers. I have my appointment letter as an accounts staff in one of the companies Australia. Though, my position is lower than what it was while in Nigeria, it is a good starting point. The journey wasn't easy but it's worth it. To be continued........... 60 Likes 6 Shares |

bro, stop worrying about what strangers say on NL. there will always be someone who will look down on whatever you do (whether good or bad)... so just DO YOU and so long as you are happy with the choices you've made in life (whether good or bad) then so be it. 6 Likes |

Usefulsense:I belong to this group because you stated that someone who packs sheet for a living lives a decent life than a bank manager in Nigeria. That was a terrible comparison as no matter the issues Nigeria has, a sheet packer in the abroad CAN NEVER have a better life than a bank manager in Nigeria. Your comparison was the issue. See your statement: Usefulsense: See my replies here: Gerrard59: Gerrard59: See another similar reply: Treadway: A particular guy told me in the said thread that I will never get accounting role in Australia because of the competition.I am glad you are able to get a role within your industry and obviously on merit - a great feature of every developed society. Congratulations! But please, let's fear God when we make certain comparisons. As you can read above, I have nothing against anyone relocating anywhere, whether from Nigeria or to Nigeria and elsewhere. But some comparisons are out of place. 11 Likes |

Mcslize:I am an Igbo man, so why should I protest? Do you want me to be accused of "burning Nigeria" and being called all sorts of names? The Tinubu government should continue till when it gets tired and wants to leave office. Nigerians campaigned and voted for him in 2023, ditto for Buhari in 2015 and 2019. In fact, as I have stated countless times on NL if an election is organised today, Tinubu will win free and fair. He will ONLY lose if Buhari is his opponent. 10 Likes |

Some good for nothing people and their opinions attimes as if they are God. Truth is satan uses people to pull one down from their designed path in life. The bible has said it and that's final," trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not in your own understanding " . What that means is that what ever good decision one takes and involves God, it will surely end well irrespective of the age. I wish you and your family more blessings in good health and prosperity. 1 Like |

Gerrard59: Na the name of the profession dey decieve most people shall. I know a restaurant woman at my junction that sells many varieties of food that has already built 2 houses and currently laying foundation for the third one as I type this comment. Mind you, it's just a mama put kind of restaurant but she swims in millions. People patronize her a lot because she knows the business well. People like you go still say you can't compare a mama put woman at the junction with a bank manager.. How much is a Bank Manager's salary by the way. Can he save 50 million in 10 years without involving himself in fraudulent activities in the Bank? That's the only way most of these top office holders in Nigeria become rich anyway.. Some people care about the means no matter how lucrative and rewarding the ends may be. While others don't give a damn about the means as long as it justifies the ends... So I understand why OP would make that statement. 2 Likes 1 Share |

internationalman:Why should he save 50 million when inflation and devaluation eat up the money? Why do you think it is not possible to save that amount as a bank manager? I think most of you people under-rate certain professions and the earnings they make. Yes, there is corruption, but people do earn quite a lot in certain industries in Nigeria and legitimately as well. I believe the major problem is the dearth of accurate information regarding salaries in corporate Nigeria. Most importantly, the mama-put woman is an entrepreneur, not an employee. Apples to oranges, not apples to apples. That said, the mama-put woman has done well for herself. But if she migrates to Australia to pack sheet, she can never live a decent life compared to while in Nigeria. Again, no sheet packer in Australia lives a decent above a bank manager in Nigeria. If you disagree, maybe you should define what the phrase "decent life" means as a sheet packer. Some people care about the means no matter how lucrative and rewarding the ends may be.If anyone wants to pack sheet, that is okay. But correlating that to living a decent life in Australia above a bank manager in Nigeria is abominable. 3 Likes |

Gerrard59: You made your point and I get it. But my point is, in Nigeria, most people you think are miserable because of the nature of their job are well to do than the so called bank manager.. To me it's not always the nature of the job. Nigerians normally look down on people doing a less academic professional jobs because of the disparity in the way they are treated.. The disparity in Nigeria is so unbelievably ridiculous. How can a Bank manager be earning 1.5M to 2M and his subordinates earn 80k, 100k, 120k and the security people at the gate earn as low as 30k to 50k. You think that disparity is normal? The same Bank manager earning 1.5M to 2M probably has a gate man and a house girl at home whose combined salary don't amount to 5% of his salary. You also think that's normal.. I believe if the gap in salaries is narrowed, or if the high earners in Nigeria are taxed let's say 40% of their salaries you wouldn't think so high of them as much as you do now. People get rich in advance countries by being self employed and employing people in return and as a result contributing to government revenues and consequently lessening the burdens of government. But in Nigeria most of those bank managers and other top office holders and some other rich people generally, get rich by cheating the system and benefiting from the system more than the system benefits from them by taking advantage of crooked Government policies that in the first place, was set out to favour them solely. There are a lot of policies I would change and put in place to make life easy for the poor people if I were selected 😉 the president of this country... But unfortunately our leaders are also selected from the categories of the rich people I aforementioned in the immediate paragraph above. So they don't know what it feels like to be poor and suffering and as such you don't expect them to make any policies that would favor the poor more than them. 1 Like 1 Share |

sonofanarchy: My family never stopped praying to God for a job in accounting. When I got home from one of my shifts on a particular day, a thought flashed my mind. I reasoned in my mind to meet the head of accounts of the organization where I worked (as a pick packer) and tell him my story. I discussed with one of my colleagues (the man is elderly, he told me he is 70 but you won't believe it) in the warehouse and asked for his advise. He directed me to have a chat with the warehouse manager. The following day, before I could go to the manager, that my colleague had already discussed with him. So when I finally met the manager, he promised to send a mail to HR. I must say this, while I worked in the warehouse, I put in my all into my assignment. In fact, I became a household name in the entire warehouse. I made friends so easily. On two different occasions, I was called to train new intakes and induct them on what we do. I trained a lady from Iraq and a man from Fiji island. Even though I didn't see what the manager wrote about me, I believe he wrote good recommendation for me. One major concern the organization had is how someone who had worked as a financial controller of a company overseas would accept an officer role. My answer to them was that the same financial controller is a pick packer in a warehouse. To cut the long story short, I was interviewed and employed in the finance department of the organization where I worked as a warehouse pick packer. I met a friend from Edo state in one of the houses where I went to work as a disability support worker. His story is exactly like mine. He was an IT guru and worked with the federal government before he came to Australia. According to him, he started work in the warehouse, met his shift supervisor and told him his situation. He was invited for interview in the same company for an IT role and he was offered the job. He became a permanent staff. My focus now is praying to God for my PR. As soon as that drops between now and the next three months, I will update you guys. That will be my final update on my migration story. You can read my story on this platform. 8 Likes |

Gerrard59: Sir, I still maintain that a shit packer in Australia lives better than a bank manager in Nigeria. a shit packer is even paid higher than those of us that worked in the warehouse. a shit packer has electricity 24/7 a shit packer has 1000% better access to good medical care that a bank manager in Nigeria. a shit packer has no need to fear kidnappers, armed robber etc here. a shit packer has no need to queue for fuel Your new monthly minimum wage is a shit packers 2 hours wage, a shit packer most likely has another job such that your bank manager will only dream of his monthly savings when converted to Naira. a shit packer eats better food with fruits and beverages than your bank manager. if you see the kind of cars warehouse workers drive to work, you will marvel. It is in Nigeria that your bank manager driving tokumbo Toyota rav 4 2015 model will think he has arrived. Come over here and see guys driving tear rubber suvs of brands you have never heard of. Though, you may say those machines are on mortgage. I worked in the warehouse and disability organisation for four months and acquired a parcel of land in the East measuring 90feet by 93feet. The total cost plus fencing is about 11 million naira. Your bank manager cannot afford it legally even in 2 years. 8 Likes |
