Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials have recently been turning back numerous Indian and Nigerian visitors at Canadian airports, often offering them the option to apply for refugee status instead. This practice has raised concerns among travelers, particularly those with approved visitor visas stamped on their passports.

Reports from Toronto and Montreal airports indicate that genuine family members visiting Canada, sometimes for the second or third time, are being denied entry despite having valid visas. A recent incident on July 8 involved over 40 Indian visitors arriving on Air Canada Flight No. AC-51 at Montreal airport, who were refused entry and asked to return to their home country or apply for refugee status.

Many of these visitors were elderly and had limited English proficiency, complicating their ability to explain their visit's purpose. In one case, an officer was reportedly rude to elderly parents visiting for the second time, granting them only a one-month stay instead of the usual six months. Their brother-in-law faced repeated pressure to apply for refugee status and endured a 10-hour ordeal before receiving a one-month stay.

Similar incidents have affected the Nigerian diaspora. One Nigerian visitor was harassed and sent back the day after arrival, while another was turned back on June 29 because he did not travel with his spouse. In May, Montreal officers allegedly forced tourist visa holders to apply for refugee status for around 12 hours.

A visa does not guarantee entry into Canada under Canadian law. However, these recent actions by CBSA have sparked concern among affected communities, who question the treatment of legitimate visitors.

CBSA officials emphasize the importance of securing borders, but these measures are seen as excessively harsh and disruptive to genuine travelers. As the situation develops, there is growing pressure on Canadian authorities to address these concerns and ensure fair treatment for all visitors.
