The Federal Ministry of Education, National Board for Technical Education and stakeholders in the polytechnic have supported the establishment of a National Polytechnic Commission to promote academic standards in the education sector.

Speaking at a public hearing organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education on Wednesday in Abuja, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Sani Gwarzo said the establishment of the National Polytechnic Commission was long overdue, as it will take over proper regulations of the sector.

He further said that the commission when established, will bring the polytechnics in Nigeria to conformity with their counterparts in other parts of the world.

He assured that the Ministry would support every move aimed at putting in place a standard commission that would ensure standard, stating that it was ready to offer any assistance needed to ensure quick passage of the bill and establishment of the commission.

In his address, Speaker of the House, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen said the National Polytechnic Commission will serve as a regulatory body that ensures standards are upheld across polytechnics nationwide.

He explained the initiative aims not only to enhance the quality of education but also to promote uniformity and excellence within the polytechnic system, to ensure that graduates from these institutions are well-prepared to meet industry demands and contribute meaningfully to our economy.

Speaker Abbas further stated that the public hearing aligns seamlessly with the legislative agenda aimed at enhancing the educational framework within Nigeria.

He explained further that the creation of the Federal Vocational and Entrepreneurship Institute in Lagos State will provide essential training opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs and, skilled workers alike.

Abbas said it is envisaged that this institute will focus on equipping individuals with both technical skills and entrepreneurial acumen—an essential combination for fostering innovation and economic growth.

He said: “We recognize that in an increasingly competitive global environment, we must equip our youth with relevant skills and knowledge. The proposed agency and institutions will serve as beacons of excellence—providing qualitative education that meets international standards while also being tailored to meet local needs.

I don't understand this country at all.

Few months ago, Tinubu ordered the implementation of Oronsaye report to reduce the number of MDAs in this country.

These people are planning to start a commission for polytechnics instead of amending the acts establishing NUC to regulate the polytechnics too and cut the cost of governance.

Do we even think in this country? Why do these people behave like the world's richest country whereas Nigeria has more paupers than any other country on planet earth?

Finally, some positive steps towards education! This is the kind of initiative we need to enhance technical skills in the country. Let's see more support for our youth and future generations.

Another burden on the economy, why can't you expand the duty of NUC to cover every institution in the country? You are dumb. Nigeria is not structured to work, it should always fail with the current ring of so-called leaders without brain

Honestly that should have been the way out...
but my question on this subject is why do we have Hausas and Fulanis at the helms of affairs in Education Commissions and the likes in Nigeria, when their region has the highest % of out of school children?
Are we getting anything right at all?

I think PBAT should also look in this direction and reverse the trend.

The various commissions we have are redundant and we want to create more, Nigeria is long gone.

1. Oronsaye reports implementation in the mud.

2. Instead of working towards eradicating the dichotomy btw HND and B.Sc, they are widening it more, with useless policy without foresight
government of chop I chop, they all sleep and put their head in same direction.

You really echoed my sentiment. Our rulers most especially the president doesn't have any plans of reducing the cost of governance. If he does, he wouldn't have appointed 45 ministers.

The Oronsaya's report will continue to accumulate dust in the archive it is. Down here in Nigeria, what we have are rulers that only planning for next election from the day they are elected and not the quest to provide meaningful leadership to the governed. It is really unfortunate.

What then happens to the NBTE? Or are we just a community that are desirous of dublicating agencies for other reasons rather than meeting the constitutional requirements for standardization.

I thought we could empower the NBTE to be more functional & equipped to carry out these mandates effectively.

But......

Lawmakers should have amended the act that established NUC to form a commission that will oversee the affairs of Universities, Polytechnics and colleges of Education. Then all colleges of education should be converted to universities of education, instead of waiting poeple's time using 3years to study in college of education and another 3years for degree program making 6years. Then ensure that no universities should be allowed to run educational courses except universities of education, this will surely eradicate dichotomy of certificates among graduates from various institutions in Nigeria

It's like senate and house of representatives are created to establish agencies. A single commission can effectively cater for all the categories of institutions we have. A waste could have been avoided. What a country?. Any job creation that will not lead to increase in productivity is a liability.

I will always doubt any policy made by any government whose credibility and motives is questionable. It doesn't matter if the policy sounds like the best in the whole world.

What a corrupt motive cannot destroy doesn't exist.

Good point. Or colleges of education courses are converted to a two-year program with the opportunity for those who wish to further their education to continue from third year in the University.

The truth of the matter is that these so called leaders do not care.

Nonsense! Is NBTE not overseeing the administration of polytechnics already.

Do you know the financial implications of this especially at a time when we should be frugal in our spending.
