The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed the arrest of some top officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) over alleged mismanagement of the N90 billion intervention for the 2024 hajj.

The ICPC spokesperson, Demola Bakare revealed this to News360 Nigeria gathered during a telephone conversation on Friday morning, saying the arrest was necessitated because the suspects failed to honour the agency’s earlier invitation.

He said ICPC operatives visited the commission’s office in Abuja on Wednesday and arrested all the officials who refused to honour the previous invitation to answer questions regarding the N90 billion hajj subsidy scam, News360 Nigeria gathered

He said, “It is true we arrested the Director of Finance. Initially, we invited them, but they refused to come, that was why we went there to make the arrest. We did not shut down the office as speculated. We arrested the people who did not turn up.

“I would not be able to mention their names, that would amount to a media trial. One of the people that we arrested is the Director of Finance.”

Bakare revealed further that the anti-graft agency had released on bail the suspects arrested in connection with the corruption allegations against the Hajj Commission. However, they are required to regularly report to the agency as the investigation into the corruption allegations continues.

He added, “No, they are not with the ICPC, they have been admitted on bail. But the investigation continues. If they refuse to come (honour subsequent invitation), we will arrest people that stood as their sureties.”

In July, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission also interrogated the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Jalal Arabi, over alleged misappropriation of funds.

after civil war relaxed, they used the structure of Nigeria to execute the war booty phase. Their religion and development shall be funded by the perceived losers' resources. Unfortunately, that resource is oversubscribed today. They have used it to borrow ahead of time. Give that rubbish hajj sponsorship one or two years at most and see how it will be stopped as hardship grip them.

What's the govt's business in sponsoring pilgrimages?. They should remove their hands in all these religious travelings. If you feel, your prayers will best be heard in Mecca or Israel or wherever fucking place. Then, it's best you sponsor yourself to the place. Government should use the money for other important things. These programs ain't adding anything to ourlives

That is part of the foolishness that is Nigeria and why the entire system, beginning with the constitution needs to be reviewed! undecided

And here's the kicker. This is likely not the first time these same set of thieves have stolen the loot, only they got caught this time around. But that is no guarantee that they will be forced to refund all they have stolen or even serve actual jail time for the crime committed. We have seen these things happen so many times before now to know that this government is not really interested in conquering that black hole that is corruption. I mean only last week we read of the president embarking on a massive bribery and corruption campaign of his own against #EndBadGovernance protesters We are even now learning that many of the schemes he had announced around the same time were fraudulent... his rice to everywhere measure was really a ghost rice mission. undecided

90 billion is enough to build at least 3 factories that will employ a sizeable amount of people.

But no , poverty capital of the world decided to use it for a religious trip to a foreign country

The Lie said to the Truth, "Let's take a bath together, the well water is very nice.

The Truth, still suspicious, tested the water and found out it really was nice. So they got naked and bathed.

But suddenly, the Lie leapt out of the water and fled, wearing the clothes of the Truth.

The Truth, furious, climbed out of the well to get her clothes back.
But the World, upon seeing the naked Truth, looked away, with anger and contempt.

Poor Truth returned to the well and disappeared forever, hiding her shame.

Since then, the Lie runs around the world, dressed as the Truth, and society is very happy..... because the world has no desire to know the naked Truth.

When I heard this news for the first time, it was crazy. That amount of money is too much to be used to fund hajj. That's more than the FAAC of almost half the states in this country

The imagine, the money that can be used to build ten of Power station like that Geometric power plant just built in Aba, which will solve nigeria electricity problem and create jobs. But nigeria politician are not interested in solving our problem.
The annoying thing is that no religion leaders will never see anything wrong with this wasting of national resources.

The same hajj commission that seems untouchable under buhari....stealing money under the disguise of religion. I believe Nigeria can face the reality that this government meant well for this nation except their governors, senators, reps and local government chairman who seem bent to ruin the effort of FG.

The FG is claiming that Nigeria cannot afford high salaries, yet they went ahead to fund the Hajj trip and injected N90 billion of the country's funds into Saudi Arabia's religious tourism industry.

Year in, year out, heavy sums and FX discounts are given to Muslims because they want to go for Hajj, yet we claim the economy is bad.

Are Nigerian politicians not the most insane people on earth? Why should the FG keep funding religious tourism, especially when we all know it is loop sided‽ I guess that's one of the dividends of the muslim-muslim ticket. 🤔

Which God are they giving the money? There is no normal government funding religious trips except Nigeria. Almajiri children are busy roaming the north, yet billions are budgeted annually, money which goes into Saudi's economy.

No normal country pays for people to go to another country en-masse under the guise of religion. If anyone wants to go for Hajj or to Jerusalem, let them use their own funds! Nigeria can't keep wasting money on things that don't benefit the economy.
