Bail-for-Cash Scandal: Anambra Judiciary Probes magistrates

Judiciary has commenced an investigation into allegations of bribery involving magistrates in the state.

The allegations suggest that some magistrates are extorting money from clients after granting them bail.

A lawyer whose client was allegedly affected made the allegations in a video statement over the weekend in Awka.

In response, the State Judiciary confirmed that it is aware of the unofficial reports circulating on social media regarding bribery allegations at one of the magistrate courts in Awka.

In a statement signed by the Deputy Chief Registrar, PC Udeorah, Esq., the Judiciary assured the public that it takes such claims seriously and will fully investigate any unethical behaviour, adding, "Any judicial officer found wanting will be dealt with accordingly."

The statement read: "We have initiated communications with the Chief Magistrate and court staff mentioned in the allegations.

"We are also making efforts to reach the lawyer who raised the allegations. We ask the public to allow the investigations to proceed without prejudice and assure them of our commitment to upholding justice and maintaining public trust."
