The Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe, has cancelled various traders’ associations in markets in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, intending to remove their undue control of prices and ensure farmers have direct access to traders.

Oba Adejugbe, who also ordered traders in the markets not to sell their foodstuff beyond stipulated prices, said the steps were necessary to regulate the high prices of foodstuff in the state capital.

The monarch, leading the Ewi-in-Council, gave the directive in Ado Ekiti on Monday during a meeting with the leadership and some members of the market women association, warned of sanctions for anybody who flouted the directives.

The Ewi-in-Council, which noted with dismay the reports from members of the public on the heartless attitudes of most of the traders leading to high food prices, said the directives were to correct the trend.

The Council, at the meeting, directed that henceforth “vegetables should not be sold more than N50; pepper, pepper N100; garri N700; while kilogramme of meat should be reduced to N4,500.”

Oba Adejugbe said, “Reports have it that traders, under the aegis of the associations, hide under middlemen to inflate the prices of goods such as tomatoes, pepper, vegetable, palm oil, locust beans, meat, garri, among others by dictating prices to the farmers that brought them to the markets for sale.

“We have taken these steps to make life bearable for residents of the town. I hereby direct the leadership of traders in the market to effect the directives. Chiefs will continue to monitor marketplaces to ensure strict implementation and sanction defaulters.

Can someone please kindly inform kabiyesi that while its good that he has banned middle men who inflate prices, he has not exactly ordered that fertiliser be sold at uninflated prices, nor has he placed any control on land prices and labour and transport costs that contribute to the price of food in the market. And that if the prices he has ordered mean I sell at a loss, there are other markets where i can take my food to sell at a profit.

Fact of the matter is that traders are increasing prices arbitrarily and causing relentless inflation due to ignorance. Yes transport and labor costs has increased but production and transportation is being done in bulk so economy of scale should kick in as the cost is spread over multiple units of the products.
People are just too greedy.

grin nice step in the right direction

Market unions has done more harm than good

Market union was created to cater for the welfare of the traders but now it has turned an organization to suffer fellow citizens and they fix exorbitant prices on goods u can actually get cheap just bcuz they need money to loot in the organization

Oba, this is not sustainable sir, everything will go back to the status quo soonest. Why not use your influence to tackle the menace killing every soul in your locality before enforcing this order. It annoys me when Nigerian leader enforces temporary solutions to situations instead of tackling issues from the root. Tueh!!!!

You don't have right to force Producers of food how much to sell. Because that will bring advanced hunger. Those people and others that have this will refuse to produce next time. Instead why not grow large hectares of food in your domain as oba? Then sell

Does he have such power to ban a lawful organisation, the sellers have organisation, the motorist have organisation narrowing down to the last resort in the market. Banning just one isn't gonna be the best option it will lead to new problem

At least the Oba has the interests of his subjects at heart and is taking measures, no matter how small they may be.

This monarch is to learn more.

You don't want market union to fix prices but you are fixing prices grin

Allow forces of supply and demand to fix prices of foods and services, if you want to remove the excesses of the trade union do that but to start fixing prices when you aren't even a player in the demand d and supply value chain.

What happens to cultivating those essential products and flooding he market with it rather than fix prices that won't allow growers to make profit for their products?

How feasible is this?
However, not a single ministry or parastatal is functional these days.

What happened to Consumers Protection Agency and the likes?
An Oba has to step in just like the masses have to organise a protest because Labour Unions are so toothless and uninspiring.
Na wa o.

Zero economic sense, they will end of creating a black market in the community or worsen the scarcity.

Solution to cheap food is surplus production, anything else is a communist approach. Will they force the transporters to also reduce the cost of transporting the food to the community? Will they force the farmers to sell at a discount?
Will they force the fertilizer and farm implement sellers to sell at a discount to the farmers?

Na Ooni of Ife first do this thing but I love how other Obas are now doing the same. It will really help their people.

Imagine, "Association of Garri Sellers" increasing the price of Garri to any amount they like because of their own greedy profit. This is good!!

I don't know the authority in charge of the petroleum sellers too, because that is where the major problem started from. PMS sellers should have same price. NNPC selling 580 here, another selling 690, and one is selling at 910 in same city without being checked

Mr. Man, most of cash crops do not need fertilizer in the Southwest to grow. It’s man inhumanity to man that causes these artificially inflated prices of common foodstuff. The Kabiyesi took the right step.

Thats not true. How much is fuel in your area and believe me most of these traders travel far as early as 4 am to get the items back to the market. Police check points, fuel, diesel and other things don’t help matters. Think am na.

I think that this is good. A satchet of milo is N200 in retail stores while the roll of 10 is 1400 in whole sale market.
Using N50 profit to sell just a satchet of millo is too high.
We know how provision store business works...

No body should talk about fuel and transportation here because the traders them self are doing this on purpose.
For example, a bag pure water is 350 but they are still selling 50 for one, is that not a character of corruption
