Tanko Yakasai, founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, says Nigeria’s constitution is not the problem, but those operating it.

Yakasai said this in reaction to a call by The Patriots, a group of elder statesmen who recently visited President Bola Tinubu and canvassed for a new constitution.

In a statement on Wednesday, Yakasai said without a change of mindset and conduct of the country’s leaders, “even the most perfectly crafted constitution will fail to deliver the progress and stability”.

The elder statesman said internal cohesion and “rigorous debate” must be prioritised by The Patriots before engaging in external advocacy.

“I have observed with deep concern the recent visit by some members of The Patriots to the president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, where they canvassed for a new constitution for our beloved country, Nigeria,” he said.

“As a founding member of this esteemed group and an elder statesman committed to the well-being of our nation, I must express my reservations about both the process and the content of the submission made during this visit.

“First, it is regrettable that due process was not followed in articulating the views that were presented to the president. A matter of such national importance requires thorough consultation, inclusive deliberation and the consensus of all founding members.

“The exclusion of key voices, particularly in a group like The Patriots, undermines the credibility and unity of our mission. It is essential that our decisions and representations are rooted in collective wisdom and not rushed or unilateral actions.

“Second, I align with the views expressed by President Olusegun Obasanjo that the core problem facing Nigeria is not necessarily the constitution or the tenure of office. The crux of our challenges lies in the attitude and character of those who operate the constitution.”

Yakasai said the president should tread carefully and consult widely on the demand by The Patriots.

A constitution that was conceived and drafted under military rule and direction leveraged on the force of arms is not reflective of the true aspirations and ideals of a free people. That said 1999 constitution is as illegal as the coup that imposed the government of its birth.

I have said it a few times here that Northerners will resist a new constitution.

Did people notice that a few weeks ago when southerners were screaming 'regionalism', Northern politicians didn't even bother to comment.

That's because any constitutional change will have to go through the Senate and the House of Rep.

Northern representatives are the majority in both Houses. So they'll just wait for Southerners there and vote against any Southern proposal.

The current bad system pays the Northerners. Why will they agree to change it.

I assume Northerners are very relaxed.

They don't mind Southern so-called experts jumping from Arise TV to Channels to social media blowing grammar about this and that and being hailed by their naive followers.

They (Northerners) know nothing can change without their consent.

Relax. He's right. There's nothing wrong with constitution. Of it will be tweaked and adjusted until it becomes perfect.

What are you proposing in a new constitution?

Finally, someone to call The Patriots to order because if we are not careful, they will be the ones to start setting agenda for us. A self interest group will distract us and be used to control public discourse.

We just need better laws. All this restructuring talk is nothing but constitutional amendment.

I can't wait to see a vibrant local government in action. We need a system that will tackle corruption particularly infrastructural contractors. Kickbacks need to stop.

We play 2 different media in Nigeria..Northerners will listen more to foreign media or Hausa content than local. Buhari spoke to foreign Hausa more than his country. Yar Adua could not be found but BBC Hausa could find a way to talk to him.

The topics they speak about are different but don't get it mixed up, the Southern press has more influence on foreign media because not everyone understands Hausa. That will eventually sip into BBC, VOA, DW Hausa and all of them. Dora did not speak Hausa before the doctrine of necessity became hot topic. What they did with The North is What BBC is trying to do with pidgin and Yoruba. It is dangerous for foreigners to control your media. Information warfare is part of neocolonial tactic to keep a stronghold on their babies. That's why that Malian banned foreign media from covering politics before they cause confusion for them with their agenda.

If Tinubu wants to amend the constitution, he will send a bill to the Senate and get Godswill Akpabio to pass it. Nigerian legislature has passed the stage when they deliberate on bills and later go for public hearings. Bills are now passed within 3 days.

We have a useless senate. The question should be, does Tinubu have the political will to do it? He said his focus is on the economy, yet things are getting worse.

Tanko is half right here! undecided

The blame for the situation in Nigeria today is the Nigerian people who have taken a backseat approach to their democracy for almost the whole 25 years of democracy. Democracy is supposed to be a government of the people by the people, however, the Nigerian people have instead chosen to relinquish their power and status to their elected servants and are merely paying dearly for that terrible decision. No matter how ironclad a constitution is, if the people refuse to vet and elect competent public servants, at the same time monitoring them to ensure they are eliminated when necessary, the same situation is bound to occur.

As for the looters in power today, do you really blame them for taking advantage when the people meant to be responsible for holding them accountable at every turn refused to do so? undecided

Of course, at this point, Nigeria does need a new constitution as the current one is no better than used tissue paper. But even a new Constitution, cannot guarantee a difference if the people of Nigeria remain set in their old ways. undecided

If you have ever in fact read the document for yourself, you will find that the problem we have today did not start with it. Yes, it was forced on Nigerians but that is not enough of a reason for why Nigeria turned out the way it has today. Understand that Constitutions are not magical documents. If the people require enforcement of the laws Supreme Laws highlighted in the documentation at every level of government, the Supreme Law becomes nothing more than a background joke. undecided

The current constitution would have worked well had the people been installed themselves as the backbone of this democracy from the beginning. Rather, Nigerians got themselves chasing after Messiahs forgetting their role was meant to be as the Messiahs in what was meant to be their democracy. undecided

The Constitution has already been bastardized by the current administration more so than any other before it. Even if we were to roll back all the bills signed in the last 25 years, we would still not be able to get away from the fact that many of the laws stipulated were easily tampered with. A new Constitution signed off on by the People is the right way to go at this point in time. undecided

The call for a new Constitution is not wrong, however, I agree with you that this is an attempt by the group to hijack what should be the mission chaired by the Nigerian people. undecided

As it is, with the many unconstitutional amendments and laws made at the top of the current constitution, it is impossible to get better laws in Nigeria without repealing every law that has been signed in the last pretty much 25 years. Every successive government in that time has used our courts to put in place several hierarchies of anti-people laws that to do anything meaningful at this point, you might as well start with a new Constitution. undecided
