Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos has directed the interim forfeiture of a cash sum to the tune of $2.045m, seven choice landed properties and shares linked to the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The judge arrived at the verdict consequent upon the suit marked FHC/L/MISC/500/2 filed and moved by counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).

The two shares certificates are of Queensdorf Global Fund Limited Trust, while the properties are all located in the highbrow Lekki and Ikoyi parts of Lagos State and Agbor in Delta State.

The affected landed properties are two fully detached duplexes of identical structures at No. 17b Hakeem Odumosu Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, an undeveloped/bare land, measuring 1919.592 sqm with Survey Plan No. DS/LS/340 at Oyinkan Abayomi Drive (Formerly Queens Drive), Ikoyi, Lagos; a bungalow at No. 65a Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, (Formerly Queens Drive), Ikoyi, Lagos; four-bedroom duplex at 12a Probyn Road, Ikoyi; Industrial complex under construction on a 22-plot of land in Agbor, Delta State; 8 units of undetached apartments on a plot measuring 2457.60sqm at No. 8a Adekunle Lawal Road, Ikoyi, and a full duplex together with all its appurtenances on a plot of land measuring 2217.87sqm at 2a Bank Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Addressing the court, Oyedepo (SAN) who notified Justice Aluko that the money and other items sought to be forfeited were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, relied on Section 17 of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14, 2006, Section 44 (2)(B) of the 1999 Constitution and the court’s inherent jurisdiction.

The senior lawyer equally supported the motion ex parte with an affidavit deposed to by an EFCC investigator, Idi Musa.

After entertaining the contention of the SAN, Justice Aluko granted the interim forfeiture of the said sum, the share certificates and the landed properties.

More so, Justice Aluko ordered the EFCC to publish the interim forfeiture order in a national newspaper to enable anyone interested in the properties to appear before the court and show cause within 14 days why the final order of forfeiture of the said properties should not be made in favour of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN).

Justice Aluko adjourned further hearing until September 5, 2024.

An interim order precedes a final order of forfeiture. The court has given 14 days to whomever claims to be the owner to step forward. As is the practice, no one will. So here are my thoughts:

1. When looters loot our treasury, they do so aware of these possible fallouts and consequences. To mitigate that, they oversteal, so that when the law catches them, only a fraction of the loot is returned, and at worst a conviction which can be negotiated.

2. The unfound loot remains theirs to protect, own and pass to their children. So they basically just take the fall, but the loot is effectively now "generational" wealth. I think that the minimum penalty for large scale corruption in Nigeria now should be 40 years in jail.

Emefiele was a willing tool in the hands of powerful forces, he had no levels, no balls or any integrity. His missteps show that he was perhaps Nigeria's most mumu CBN Governor who must have converted the greed of the political class at his time to cash vending. He lacked character. He lacked capacity and he was a most unprofessional man.

Let it howeverr be known to Cardoso, that the same fate awaits him if he proceeds on this same path even though he does seem to be overwhelmed with economic recovery issues.

Emefiele is a case study of how to NOT be a great man.

Hehehe.

A very useless man. He allowed himself to be used.

If not that Nigeria is a funny country, why is Buhari and his gang of looters still walking free?.

Meanwhile someone should pls help me to ask EFCC chairman, where Yahaya Bello da?.

The man swore on a national television, that if he don't arrest Bello,he will quit his job. It been ages now,and no show.

We have a lot of men devoid of integrity in power. A man that swallows his vomit should never be trusted to head an important organization such as EFCC.

This government is fooling themselves,
This is just fodder for the masses
Even 10 million dollars is chump change compared to what Emefiele looted.

What is 2.4 million dollars !! Is that money ??
They are so bold with the theatrics and drama

Buhari and his cabal really did this country big thing. The level of looting during the regime alone collapse this country to a large extent. With the amount of money that Emefiele pilfered, this country supposed to be on the way to recovery. I don't think this country can get better

He masqueraded as a hero, claiming to liberate Nigerians from a corrupt cabal, but in reality, he was a key architect of our economic demise.

His theatrical display of clutching a Bible during his arrest was a cynical attempt to portray himself as a martyr, and to obscure his complicity in the destruction of our economy under the inept Buhari administration.

He knew we are a sheepish people, easily puppeteered.

The lack of oversight at (CBN) enabled his reckless actions, and those who failed to prevent or enabled his malfeasance must face accountability.

Directors and senior managers at the apex bank should be on trial too.

The consequences of his actions will haunt Nigeria for generations to come.

Our current fiscal and monetary chaos will transcend into a turmoil.

Buhari's presidency was a catastrophe, marked by gross incompetence and willful ignorance. Buhari entrenched corruption.

He was utterly unqualified for the role and likely never even bothered to review critical documents, or activities in the agencies of government, leaving the country in ruins.

Tinubu facilitated the Buhari’s presidency for his own self-interest. Osinbajo was his boy. Now, holding the rein, Tinubu is not clueless. He is still there for his own self interest.

Thief fighting thief. Corruption fighting the corrupt. Emefiele's only offense against this administration is that he dared to contest for president on the same platform with Tinubu. Safe for that, Tinubu would have looked the other way. This is a classical case of "dog chop dog".

Anyways, serves him right!

This is probably the most foolish CBN Governor Nigeria ever had.

He supervised the deterioration of the Naira-Dollar exchange rate from N160 to N750 from 2014 when President Jonathan appointed him till 2023 when President Tinubu sacked him.

He even foolishly tried to become President of Nigeria while in a non-partisan role as CBN Governor.
