On Friday 16 August 2024, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, a 37-year-old political heiress and former hotel executive, was approved by parliament to become Thailand’s next prime minister.

She was educated at Chulalongkorn University, an elite conservative institute in Bangkok.

Known by her nickname “Ung-Ing”, Paetongtarn is the youngest child of 75 year old billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, founder of the Pheu Thai party.

Her father was elected Prime Minister in 2001, became the country’s first premier to serve a full term, won re-election by a landslide in 2005 but was eventually ousted by the Thai army in 2006.

Before entering politics in 2021, Paetongtarn helped to run the hotel subsidiary of her family’s business empire.
